Nowadays UG and PG students don't read books. Just they read ppts and easy notes from internet to prepare for the exams. That is reflecting in their writing skills. They can't even write a full paragraph on their dissertation topic. We need to bring back books to classroom.
If you stick to the quality of the publication rather than quantity, maybe during 5 years of PhD no publication is going to come, on 6 or 7th year maybe a breakthrough research will come. In between who will motivate the scholar. Govt will never.they may be starving him by
Though 19% increase is low. But an increase of 6000โน is a relief to JRFs. Please don't make researchers come out next time. Revise the fellowships yearly
I use MS word to prepare manuscripts. MS powerpoint to prepare images. MS excell to create graphs. Is there any other free alternatives?
Purchasing in $$$ is not practical in India

I have seen today a PhD student with 120+ publication. All in reputed journals with 5-8 IFs. Surprised how it possible. But its possible.. Most papers published are good reviews with some what similar topics.. Inspired me a lot as I am not having any projects, but need to publish
A unique opportunity for students interested in research careers to get properly trained. Apply for National science academies' summer research fellowship programme,
A scientist mostly has an average of 8-9 students. How does a lab publish 100+ papers a year with that number of students? How much the lab is contributing in each paper..common answer is collaborations. How really this collab works..
Internal lab politics is one of the most important problem for many PhD students. Eiether you need to argue over and win or you need to close your eyes and move forward. I choose the second approach. Don't fall in any provocations.. Face everything calmly ๐
PhD studnt should be independent in workplan and execution. Then only they develop the ability to think scientifically. Certain labs PhDs students work like technicians executing the work given every time by the mentor.Dont see this and complain I don't have anyone to guide,my frd
I am planning to start a new Journal after ' Biotechnological Research'. My idea is to publish small research from school or college projects. The publishing will be after peer review and quality check. Free publication is what I aims. How about the idea?
'Journal of Biotechnological Research' to be launched soon. If you are interested in joining the editorial board as well as submitting your articles. Please respond in this post. Like my earlier journal, this journal will be completly APC free open access journal.
Phd in India need publications becoz
When there is no adequate funding. We have to limit our thinking. Only reward for that restricted thinking is publication.. Funding and facilities wre there v would have publishd dozen of 'Nature' pprs daily frm India. We have that much talent
Please suggest one free graph plotting software other than excel for publication quality images. Please dont post ads of commercial softwares which i cant afford.

For PhD students, it is not so important to select a topic which you love or are passionate about. But it is important how you can adapt and love by time a topic you may not be interested too. I loved to work in cell bio but ended up in microbio.but I built my interest in it.
You may not be from premier institute.
You may not have worked abroad with Nobel leaurates.
But constant working and hardwork can make you a achiever
My case also same, but said by a Dean to me.. Its true
For PhD students, work plan should be your key during research.. It should be deep rooted in your head so that you should not deviate from that..PhD is about degree, to get degree you should have publications too. So keep in mind how you are going to publish your research.
This is really good effort
IIT Kharagpur has created National Digital Library for students for all subjects. Below is the link``` :

One month completed after leaving CU. Couple of rejections in interviews. Still I hold my confidence to be back in academics to a position I want to be. No day remained waste for me these days. Learning, taking class, building up a brand. Totally engaged days..
It has been 6 months since I have been conducting online workshops successfully. Ran behind jobs, applied 100s.. No response got. So i am converting this opportunity to my full time job..Lets see..
*Written as a reply to some desperate biotech job seeker*
I waited 4 long years for my PhD. No job. No money. Starving daily. Had food once a day. Sometimes I sleep full day to save money. Still my spark I preserved for that 1000+ days. Don't give up. Keep on trying ..
Yesterday was my third interview of this season, one foreign university rejected me by saying ' you class was very good, your papers are impressive' i was happy. Then they said 'You english accent our students can't follow' OVER ๐คฃ๐คฃ
I have seen many PhD guides utilizing their students to do their household things..Some asking student to carry his suitcase to car.he move in front as a king and student on back carrying the bag. Lot of these customs we can see around. Share your experiences.

A research guide or I call "mentor" is meant not only to talk about the research work or science but also once in a while he/she should talk to the students about their personal things, personal health both physical & mental, financial status (about fellowship status) etc
How many of you remember or used OHP? I had seen the first EM image during BSc times using this. We used to buy a pack of OHP sheets and write/draw it. Later taken print using a photo copier. Even using a color copier. I used this until the PhD days at cusat.
A person like me. Worked last 4 years in teaching. 40 years.. Having 20 papers and 1400 citations. Post doc experience of 1.5 years..7 years back completed phd. Can I apply for post doc outside india. What will be my chances to get?
What is the output of your PhD?
The thesis
The Journal Papers

The Output is YOU, only YOU
Experience u gained during that period is the most valuable thing
I was rejected by RGCB 20 times..

My paper is now online as an accepted manuscript in a Wiley journal. The irony is that I don't have access to the article ๐ i knew they would give the author as it got into the final copy. But still this is the problem with subscription journals.
I thought getting back to academics is difficult after an 8 month gap. But the best happened 2 days before my 40th birthday. For me every good thing happens at the last minute only. Never been first rank in life, but Msc topper. Enrolling phd 1 week before fellowsp expiry deadlne
When you are in a group, talk in a language where everyone can communicate smoothly...In a 4 person group talking in a language 3 of them knows, then you are insulting the 4th person..
Such a nice year 2023 was. Got rid the most worst no. 1 University of India at the start. Established my own company and earned very good. Came back to academics in mid year. Crossed 1500 citations'. Going everything well and good. The courage I gained this year was enormous
If you are a biotech graduate or a post graduate from India, and if you want to get job in the Field. Don't hesitate to take your first job even if the salary is too low. After couple of years it will improve and you can establish in the field
You should never be a technician during your PhD. You should use your brain and contribute significantly in your PhD rather than just following the work plan of your guide daily. Which group do you belong to..
1. Your PhD work was proposed by you and the guide was convinced..
My journal will follow these things
-- Nominal but mandatory APC
--Paid peer review (60%of APC will be divided among peer reviewers)
--Open access
--Publication in 2-3 mon after rigorous peer review
What else can we add..?
Framing going on & true Indian journal will happen soon..
Getting your first job is most hardest thing. If you can get one. With your experience, many will follows with ease..Joining day at another university..
My two dissertation students have completed their work yesterday. So happy that in 6 months we have done good research, have very good quality data. Some more analysis results awaiting..Happy guide me ๐
Why Universities are calling for offline interviews when online systems are well known. We can save a lot money and time by online interviews. What are the advantages of offline interviews?
I think my career after msc was shaped by rgcb, trivandrum. During my masters dissertation some seniors told me there is an exam called csir net to do phd. A vague idea entered my mind
I may not be a great researcher as I have not proven much. But I am passionate researcher. Every time I think about what would be my next paper. This time the student given to me by the University did very well.Adding 4-5 papers in queue Two unofficial phd students.. More to come
As I am out of work now.institutions are trying to utilize the opportunity by offering me a salary 15k less than my last. And the HR is saying, Sir you are not working now like that. Does it make any difference. I said a big NO
