@michaelshermer The “under God” part of the pledge allegiance was tacked on after the fact in response to those godless communists! Our national motto of “e pluribus unum” (out of many, One) was changed to “In God we trust” –blurring the separation of church & state upon which we were founded.

@bindureddy Critically important: AIs don’t have to become conscious for this to create a massive problem. They merely have to act conscious & pretend to be sentient. Humans anthropomorphize everything – hell, we had pet rocks at one time! We won’t be able to resist AIs claiming sentience.

@EPoe187 Prove it. If evil has anything to do with free will, how could one be born evil? One isn't born evil. One can be born damaged in such a way though that they cannot empathize with others well. Buddhists view evil as someone who is misperceiving reality...a type of ignorance.

@glukianoff The problem is that humans didn’t evolve to see truth – but to survive. Thus, we view truth & reality through our respective tribal lenses, distorted by cognitive biases, such that we can find the “truth” that we want to maintain tribal loyalties. Tribalism trumps truth.

@GaryMarcus They left out that 20 million will be replaced by AI. 🤔😬 The truth is, no one knows, and no one can know, but my bet would be that more jobs will be displaced. Humans won’t be able to adapt at the pace at which they will be replaced bc bio organisms don’t evolve as fast AIs.

@CV_Dalcher @CattyArt1 There is always some level of external input, esp bc of social media. Environmental influences always come into play. It is part of our culture wars. It is talked about in our schools – which pronouns do you prefer? It is in our movies, TV shows, and just the zeitgeist.

@GaryMarcus Having tested IQ hundreds of times myself, people can now find the questions & answers online – to game the system regarding any psychological testing. So, after a while, these might be invalid in the same way they are for AI systems.

Since we will have to wait to see how things unfold, no one can claim with absolute certainty what will or will not happen. We should all be humble, AND it’s defensible to be proceed w caution.

@keckb33 @michaelshermer Wait…many parents are demanding that kids have access to their phones in class? Do you have data on that? I think most don’t want their kids to have access…nor do teachers. @JonHaidt has been writing/presenting tons on this - I’m w/him. Get the phones out of schools.

@JonHaidt @jean_twenge My reading is that most of the studies are correlational and the best research we have, including several metanalyses, one by @CJFerguson1111 and colleagues, suggests that screens account for a relatively small proportion of the variance in the well-being of most young people.
