Living in a third world country with sprinkles of first world characteristics can really be jarring. Whilst the other half speaks of the 4th industrial revolution 😒another half doesn't even know what it's like to have a flush toilet and running water. I don't know maan. 😭

I see this chat is back. Whether you go back to school or you don't, that 3 or 4 years will still go by. You will grow older whether you do it or you don't. This perspective literally changed my life. Went back to school at 30, now I have a PhD at 35. Weigh your options, do it.

The hardest part about teaching in a pandemic is grading assignments. How do you grade people who are living through perpetual loss, first and secondary trauma. Anxiety and depression including loadshedding if you are living in South Africa? This has been the hardest part.

The people who do PhDs are not always the people who graduated cum laude at undergrad. Most of us are late bloomers who discovered our potential at postgraduate level and then had the courage to take it forward surrounded by the right kind of support. So keep going!

My editor said that my thesis made her cry and rethink her position regarding sex work, it challenged her misconceptions, she says she has nothing but respect for the will of these women to survive. She now realizes that they are more than just sex workers they are people.

Why is it that when you are poor people strip you of your complexity? Just because I am struggling with basic needs, it doesn't mean that I don't have the capacity to engage with the abstract aspects of human existence. Our view of the poor is reductionist and condescending.

My former PhD supervisor would encourage creative writing as a way to overcome writers block. So she would say if you can't write the chapter, write a poem instead. We ended up writing an academic book chapter on this very process. I love creative unconventional academics. 🧡

Academia will amplify your traumas. If you have a fear of rejection it will show, if you are sensitive to criticism it will show. If you don't trust your voice that will be evident. If you don't think you belong you will remove yourself.

My former supervisor used to say that the methodology is the backbone of a thesis. A student I supervised said to me yesterday that I was very hard on her particularly in the methodology section. Examiners said it was one of her best chapters. Don't compromise on the methodology.

If you going to motivate young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to do a PhD like you. Please tell them about funding opportunities, share links and websites. Avail yourself for further questions. It's no use saying that they can do it when you don't provide practical steps.

One of the 1st courses I learned at varsity was the Sociology of poverty. People in the Bcom and finance streams need to be introduced to these courses. They help one understand that poverty is multifaceted and socially engineered. Not something people can snap out of.

Me a girl from Matatiele, I am part of a community of black people who are registered for their PhDs, some are already PhD candidates whilst others are PhD holders, haibo. To my 16 year old self, girl look at us now! 🤭😭🙏🏽❤️

The way I approached my dissertation was that I did not wait to be done with data collection to write. I wrote while I was in the field collecting data. I worked on my literature review, scoping review and methodology. By the time I had data I had four chapters written already.

Have you noticed how scholarships that claim to be for the "disadvantaged," require a lot of advantage and privilege? Firstly gaining access to these sites requires internet, then you need stella writing skills and great references etc. I don't know man, the game is rigged. 😢

Yes a PhD proposal can take a year to put together, remember you are conducting research to contribute something new to the body of knowledge and therefore the conceptualization process is complex. Give yourself time, a well thought out study culminates into a clear direction.

The biggest mistake that some people make is assuming that the humanities and social sciences are general knowledge. Hence they speak on matters that people spend years studying and theorizing within these disciplines, without even taking the time to do the readings.

That whole banking conversation is simply what we go through in academia its called peer review. So instead of focusing on the tone of the reviewer you simply answer the questions. When they raise issues you have no answers to, you own up and go do more thinking and you grow.

When you are surrounded by people with PhDs it may start to feel like graduating from a masters degree is not a "big"deal. But let me just say personally I was so proud of my masters because that's when I discovered my grit and tenacity. This PhD rests on that strong foundation.

Sign up on research gate follow academics in your area of study and get the most recently published papers to use for your literature review. You can even send them a message requesting an article they authored if you can't find it or if it's behind a pay wall. They respond.

It starts with NSFAS saying that they do not have enough money to fund students, and then it will change to we are only funding certain degrees. And guess which degrees they will scrape off first? Its downhill from here and we must be very afraid.

@CChetanne A lot of our dancing originates from the pantsula dance, a highly energetic dance form that originated in the black townships of South Africa during the apartheid era. So dancing with our heads turned upwards with our tongues out is a form of defiance.

I was facilitating a training this morning and for once I didn't feel the need to prove that I am the right person to facilitate. I didn't feel the need to perform, or overcompensate as a black woman, I just allowed myself to be and trusted my experience and ideas.

Be willing to let people go, never respond or act from a place of desperation. I know it's easier said than done, life will teach you to let go whether you like it or not. At the end of the day you have yourself, you may not like yourself very much but you are all you have.

Remember what matters during your PhD is not where you are doing it, but whom you are doing it with. Your supervisor will make or break you, so choose wisely. You can be in the best institution in the world but without support you are less likely to make it.

This 2 hours of loadshedding went by fast and it scares me because this means that I am getting used to it, and one day consistent electricity supply that I pay for is going to feel like a privilege instead of a right. This is how we get primed to normalize bad service delivery.

The thing about teaching at post graduate level is that there will be students who are smarter than you, or have more experience or exposure. You have to be able to face up to your insecurities and not project on those students. Let them teach you a thing or two.

I remember someone saying that because she's a plus size woman people seem disappointed when they realize that she can't sing, doesn't like cooking and doesn't have a loud or bubbly personality. Yho it was such a teaching moment, because she doesn't fit in any of the "boxes."
