Ever wondered how congenital heart disease patients do on MCS? ๐ซ๐
@RoyalPapRes
after many pros & cons lists that showed me i would probably LOVE both specialties equally, i went with my gut
iโm going to be an intensivist!!!!!! ๐ฉต
Itโs disheartening to feel like a slave to a system where hard work and success donโt seem to be rewarded. And the trend is getting worse and worse: see the newly randomised recruitment for foundation training.
Fortunately, Iโve been offered a full-time PhD in parallel in a field that I absolutely love and an incredible team of supervisors, and have decided to pursue that instead. I'm very lucky to have this option (most others don't).
Big news!
Iโve officially accepted an offer for an Academic Clinical Fellowship IMT post in Cambridge ๐ฅณ
Very excited for the next few years of training & research at

1/n On Tues 13th Jan while out on a run me and my friend were first medics @ the scene of a terrible accident on Battersea Bridge, young man hit by car while out running. Lost pulse. Started CPR. Police came. Ambulance came. We tried everything. He was so young.
Itโs not the TPDs' fault; they could only offer what was available. This is a system-wide problem. We are failing to provide the right training options and protect trainees' welfare (in this way and many others).
Despite doing well in national ranking (4th), I was offered only one post in my region: 24 months at a hospital 45 miles from home. No discussion. No alternatives.
I don't want to be a downer and Iโm trying to look on the bright side. I really am. But this experience has left me quite disenfranchised about the NHS and its training system as a whole.
Moving isnโt an option; we just bought a house. Driving that distance after night shifts isnโt safe or sustainable. I would spend so much time commuting that I would have to drop most (or all) of my research commitments.
There are five, 5 alternative hospitals that are closer to my home. The post I was offered has nearly entirely red (lowest quintile) feedback from trainees in the GMC survey.
Iโve had a tough year for some personal reasons. Family, loss, grief
I am absolutely over the moon to find out Iโve been awarded a Distinction in my MSc at

So grateful. Some years are tougher than others and today Iโm very proud of me
I was really excited to start ICM training in August - as was pretty obvious from my Twitter feed. But sometimes life takes us in unexpected directions and I'm definitely excited to spend more time on research.

1. Making sure opportunities to meet curriculum requirements (eg procedures/clinics) are *actually* built in to the program
2. Less forced rotations across hospitals (donโt mind within!)
3. Getting rotas farther in advance (6mo, not 6wk)
the first = most important
