My head of department told me that over his dead body would he ever appoint a woman to the faculty. He’s dead, I’m a Distinguished Professor
@FutureDrDukes
Please report to your grad Dean. As a former
@UofCalifornia
grad dean, one of my biggest frustrations and sadnesses was when students suffered injustices in silence and never asked for help.
Sorry for all of the subterfuge. It’s official - so delighted to announce that I have joined
@UCDavisMed
UC Davis School of Medicine names new vice dean for research
Understand this has caused a firestorm in the UK. It is simply a very moving tribute and perfect for Father’s Day. A Father's Day Gift From Meghan To Harry Is Now A Kids' Book
So excited on my first day
@UCDavisMed
- I’m really looking forward to leveraging the great and unique strengths of the Med school and the
@ucdavis
main campus to support research advances for all in this diverse community- and I feel so welcomed
Growing up poor left me isolated in academia—until I began to share my story . Important story about the “hidden minority” in academia. We need to avoid assuming all have access to the cultural curriculum

Postdoc life: Less responsibilities than the professors, more independence than the grad students. Quite honestly, it was probably the best time of my life from a scientific standpoint.

When I was a new faculty member, I received invite to reception addressed to Dr. and Mrs. B. I replied that I could not attend, and my mum could not attend either.
I was walking across campus today to a meeting, and it suddenly hit me that I have been so incredibly fortunate. I could not have dreamed as a

kid that I would have the title of Professor at one of the world’s top universities.
I can't believe that today is my very last day as EiC of
@JPhysiol
. The very best of luck to new EiC, Peter Kohl, as he begins his term tomorrow. Look for my new Twitter handle tomorrow too. Thanks for all the support and friendship for the past six years.
Such a challenging weekend. Mourning my mum, Kathleen. She had a good innings but sad she is gone. No option to fly home due to COVID scare. Grateful that Peter seems OK and that I can WFH 2moro.
This is a great piece for all seeking mentors. Most importantly, the need to manage your mentoring relationships and take charge: One mentor isn’t enough. Here’s how I built a network of mentors
All my trainees who have had kids during training have gone on to great opportunities. One just got tenure! It’s our obligation as PI’s to make sure this can work.
Rude paper reviews are pervasive and sometimes harmful, study finds. At
@JPhysiol
, we routinely remove inappropriate comments from reviews and try not to use repeat offenders.
Out of the blue tonight, I got a note from a hugely accomplished emeritus colleague I haven’t seen for ages congratulating me on an award. His words “
@UCSanDiego
is where it is because of faculty like you who excelled in research and in service”.
My heart is full....I will be leaving my role as a Division Director at NSF at the end of the week and am humbled by these wonderful messages.
It is always first and foremost about the people.
I came here as a post-doc on a J-1 visa, had a brief period with no visa b/c 2y home residence rule before my H1B, then green care and finally citizen three years ago.

Sorry, Meghan, but you’re just wrong here. In addition, in many countries, including my native UK, most doctors don’t even earn a doctoral degree. I’m happy to call them Dr. but like many other Ph.D.’s here, to say nothing of Ed.D. etc, we earned this privilege.
Just done sorting through the 36 years of my life
@UCSanDiego
in order to move my office to
@ucdavis
@UCDavisMed
@ucd_physiology
tomorrow. Came across some real gems, including the letters my thesis and postdoc advisors wrote when I was first appointed. So many memories here.
OK, so this is really happening. Flying out in the morning to spend my year
@NSF
. Looks like we'll be landing in a snowstorm. Hope this delicate California flower will survive. Wish me luck!
A little sad to have been

during Division holiday Zoom tonight. List of year's accomplishments had every MD listed as "Dr" and even nursing staff with their degrees, but I was just plain Kim Barrett. Even after 35 years, only a 2nd class citizen as PhD in a med school

Learning to love myself.
Yes, it gets better.
I have had a wonderful career (so far). But have always classed myself in the middle of the pack (if that). The peril of being a small fish in a big pond. But the last few weeks I have received so many positive affirmations about my contributions.
Please take a look at my new editorial in
@JPhysiol
. It has been such an honor to serve the physiological community for the past six years as your EiC

A great week for

! Board meeting on Monday, Leadership Team today, and I got to do an

members this morning. Plus, while it is a flawed measure in many ways, it is still worth celebrating that the Journal’s impact factor has risen to 5.182.
So pleased to have the opportunity to express what it means to be to have been selected again to serve as EiC of

Everything old is new again - Barrett - The Journal of Physiology - Wiley Online Library
Science is not well served by concentrating resources in the hands of a few. And even less so when those few lack diversity. Scientists with multiple NIH grants are overwhelmingly male and white
3 scientists who learned how cells react to oxygen levels win Nobel Prize in medicine. Should be "medicine or physiology", because this is physiology pure and simple.
I am bowled over by the outpouring of love, hugs and condolences from my Tweeps on the occasion of my mum's passing. No matter what people say about social media, I have truly found a community here.
Getting ready to head out to the first in person Editorial Board meeting for

in five years. Excited for a lively discussion of how to propel the journal to new heights following our recent uptick in submissions.
