Don’t lose your sense of humor. We should take God seriously, not ourselves, and certainly not theology. To lose your sense of humor is to lose your sense of proportion. And nothing is more important in theology than a sense of proportion.

Probably what has changed most about me as I’ve aged is my sense of the mysteriousness of it all. I’ve always felt a deep sense of mystery, but now that sense has moved to the center. And I have less and less sympathy with people who think they have it all figured out.

We hear the titles of Israel, kingdom of priests and holy nation, again in the NT, in 1 Pet. 2:9, where the apostle says, “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession.” So the NT church, like OT Israel, is God’s own special people, 1/

Scripture is clear that there is no continuing sacrifice and cannot be. Jesus’ atonement is final and complete. There is no other sacrifice for sins. It needs no continuation, repetition, or supplementation.

I did not know @timkellernyc well, but we had several conversations and had a lot of common concerns. He was a wonderful preacher and pastor, and God enabled him to work through the incredibly complicated social and cultural currents of New York. 1/

1/ We need more Christians who will lead lives of repentance. For repentance always challenges pride. If you’re coming to God daily to confess to him how much you have sinned, you will find it hard to pretend that you are holier than everybody else. You’ll find it hard

At [83 now], I look at both types of theology with sadness and amusement. God is not here to motivate our rationalistic quest. God is Lord of heaven and earth. He comes to drive us to repent of sin and embrace Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. 5/5

The biblical text has been far better preserved than any other ancient document. There are far more ancient manuscripts of Scripture & Scripture portions than manuscripts of the religions of Greece, Egypt, and Babylon, more than manuscripts of the Greek philosophers and poets. 1/

#YoungTheologians Don’t be reflexively critical of everything that comes out of a different tradition. Be humble enough to consider that other traditions may have something to teach you. Be teachable before you start teaching them. Take the beam out of your own eye.

A theologian is essentially a preacher, though he typically deals with more arcane subjects than preachers do. But be a good preacher. Find some way to make your theology speak to the hearts of people. Find a way to present your teaching so that people hear God’s voice in it.

As long as we regard some non-Reformed churches as true churches, we may not at the same time assume we have nothing to learn from them. These are fellow-members of Christ’s body, called and gifted by God for ministry. In them is the teaching office.

Peter urges apologists to keep “a clear conscience,” so that those who slander them will be “ashamed.” It is interesting that Peter does not urge apologists to be intelligent and knowledgeable (although such qualities are certainly helpful), but to lead consistently godly lives.

The basic point to be remembered here is that no kind of knowledge from outside the Bible is worthy to be added to Scripture. That includes the traditions of the Roman church, claims of contemporary prophets, and even the confessions & traditions of the Protestant denominations.

Cultivate an intense devotional life & ignore people who criticize this as pietistic. Pray w/out ceasing. Read the Bible not just as academic text. Treasure opportunities to worship in services & prayer meetings. Give attn to your spiritual formation, however you understand that.

Scripture does say some things about murder, and about unborn human life. When we bring the biblical principles together with our extra-biblical knowledge of what abortion is, it becomes pretty obvious that “thou shalt not murder” implies “thou shalt not abort.”

The chief message of the OT is “God is the Lord.” The chief message of the NT is “Jesus Christ is Lord.” To say that God is Lord is to say that everything else is his servant. The relationship between Lord and servant is called covenant.

In the NT, Jesus pronounced the blessing of God on infants (Luke 18:15–17). Jesus wasn’t just showing affection for the babies. Blessing is a very serious matter in Scripture. In blessing, God places his name on his people, as the high priest did in Numbers 6:27. 1/

The apostolic office does not continue today, but we still have elders and deacons. The deacons are primarily concerned with the ministry of mercy. The elders carry on ministries of both teaching and rule, some emphasizing the one, some the other.

The church is not an academic debating society, not a place where one seeks by whatever means to prove himself right and to prove the other guy wrong. It is, above all, a place where we care for one another as nursing mothers care for their babies.
