Overseas commentators go beserk each time New Zealand goes into a ‘go hard, go early’ lockdown. But they are blind to the fact we’ve eliminated it every time. After the last regional lockdown in Feb 2021, we won ourselves 160 days of Level 1 freedom. We do it because it works.

While you might see negative pieces from a tiny minority of commentators, the vast majority of New Zealanders support this. Very soon, we will have vaccinated to the same level as other countries, achieving similar immunity without deaths and hospital overwhelm. Wish us luck x

It’s incredibly disappointing that a UK DJ was out partying in Auckland CBD before testing positive for omicron, when he should have been self-isolating after arrival in NZ. We’ve been omicron-free till now in the community This tweet is like a metaphor 🤯

I’m seeing tweets from anxious parents about kids in Auckland returning to school tomorrow. As a Mum, paediatrician and big fan of scientific literature, I just want to share again why I’m feeling relaxed about my boys being back at school and daycare: (Refs at the end) /1

Addendum: when all is said and done, the New Zealand Covid-19 story will be a public health case study. Even if we falter from here, what we have achieved to date with elimination, leadership and collective action has been remarkable. I am truly privileged to bear witness to it.

Me, an asian female medical specialist, listening to Mike Hosking’s mocking treatment of fellow doc Dr Ayesha Verrall today on radio. Training an infectious diseases physician takes 13+ years, & not all have the public health and medical leadership expertise Dr Verrall does.

My littlest had his first day of school today. I can’t believe he’s five. If anyone needs me I’ll just be over here in the mum’s corner, in a bit of a blubbering mess 🥹🥹🥹

Just remembering that at the end of 2021 Auckland spent 107 days (!!) in some form of lockdown, and maybe this makes sense why so many people seem so exhausted right now. We did such a good job at flattening that curve. Champions and heroes, all of you

This goes a little against the general trend of the public health news today, but I signed a contract this week to step up into a new public health role advising on the child and youth health strategy for the Auckland region. I now have two offices - Starship, and this one ☺️

Best thoughts today go to our nurses. Who have delayed industrial action protesting low pay, staffing shortages and work overload, to instead deliver the highest numbers of daily vaccinations AND daily tests we have seen over the pandemic. Salt of the earth, our nurses

My Asian parents, not usually so expressive, wrote me a birthday card. My mum said the most important thing was that I have a good heart, and my dad said my grandmother (my MahMah, whom I never knew), would’ve been proud. Now I’m sitting here with good asian daughter tears

Speaking with family & friends, I'm aware that many parents are feeling uneasy about their kids returning to school and daycare on Monday. As a paediatric doctor and mum of two, I thought it might be helpful to share why I'm feeling relaxed and where I get my info from 1/9

The health system always “copes”. The system copes because when under pressure, we triage cases. Coping doesn’t mean quality care or best practice. Coping doesn’t mean safe practice. Coping refers only to the system, not to practitioners or patients.

What needs to be said for balance. The vaccine is free, safe, and can keep you, your bubble, and your students protected from Covid-19. The ‘career down the drain’ outcome, while sad for the above reasons, is preventable and reversible.

I had a minister who had a past life as a violent gang member when he was young. As an adult he was utterly transformed. But the thing that made his transformation so authentic, was that when speaking, he led with stories of his previous misdemeanours all the time. He was humble.
