Shout out to the 3 male professors sitting together yesterday who all raised their hands at once, not to speak, but to direct the person with the microphone to me, the most junior person in the room, to make sure I got a chance to speak. More of this please.
Here to admit some of my unconscious ableism - yesterday we got mums wheelchair (she can't walk well or far now due to the impacts of the brain cancer) - I thought it would be a sad moment, but as soon as I got her in it she smiled and said "we can go for trips to the beach now!"
I’m a bit tired of hearing “of those who died none were vaccinated” like it’s a accusation, a personal failing… it should be an apology, the government failed to get these people vaccinated.
Academics: when you’re asking questions at student presentations, your tone matters.
Be kind. And recognize the fact that students are learning.
Don’t teach them to be a jerk like you along with schooling them on content.
I’ve been told I need to dress more sensibly if I want to engage with industry.
We have and industry mixer on campus this afternoon....
So I’m wearing this, because what’s more sensible than VEGETABLES!
My boyfriend & I each had a cat when we moved in together. Normally, mine sits with me and his sits with him. But tonight we are sitting in each others chairs, so now we are sitting with each others cats.
Turns out, our cats are attached to the spots they sit, not us at all 😂
Friends, I’m seeing a lot of posts along the lines of “have COVID symptoms, off to find a RAT”.
If you have symptoms & don’t already have a RAT, please either get a PCR (having symptoms makes you eligible), or ask someone else to find you a RAT. Don’t go around with symptoms.
A reviewer asked for additional experiments. I wrote a sassy reply saying if we did those we'd go to a better journal, & to decline to publish this part of the story would lead to a waste of resources & time for future researchers asking the same question.
It worked. 😯
Every time I wear my donut dress someone gets upset. They accuse me of “promoting sugar” or “causing diabetes” or “glorifying obesity”.
Please do just jog on with your judgement of other people’s dietary & sartorial choices. You are not the food police.
I get that men don’t want their friends to be rapists, that’s really challenging to confront and reconcile.
We also don’t want your friends to be rapists, but for us, it’s more because we don’t want to be raped.
Today’s outfit is dedicated to the low carb haters who I’m too fat for nutrition science & my opinion that fibre has health benefits was paid for by big cereal. My most carb laden donut dress & my rice bubbles earrings.

The trolls want me to be ashamed that I’m fat and as proof they are sharing this picture. Oh my feels are so hurt. I look rocking in this dress. I can be fat and fabulous and if you can’t handle that it’s a you problem, not a me problem.
I want to clear something up after another nutrition professional suggested I shouldn't mix my appearance with my science (not a weight comment)
A) I dress like this because it brings me & others joy. I'm just living my best Ms Frizzle Life.

how could I wear another food dress today?
May all your veggies be tasty & plentiful. Find the veggies that bring you joy.
So I wrote this pasta piece you may have seen and then
@theprojecttv
goes & publishes whole chunks of it without attribution while saying “scientists say” without even mentioning me, the scientist who said it. Rude!
Hello twitter fam,
Thanks to those who noticed my short absence.
I have been quiet because unfortunately, my dear dad had a stroke on Friday & passed away on the weekend. I will miss him very, very much.
This just came up on my Facebook... Wait until these people hear that water is just one atom away from being formaldehyde! And people DRINK the stuff! 🤦♀️
So, of course, I took her immediately to the Newy foreshore and I wheeled her along to Nobbys & had a picnic for lunch. It was so very joyful. I'm sorry for not fully understanding better this earlier.
Women with children, I honour you & I commend you, & I’m sorry that society isn’t better at valuing you & your choices. But childless women are also women. We haven’t chosen to “be men” and we aren’t selfish. We aren’t lesser women.

For a loud show-offy type I’m always awkward about these posts... but I won the Faculty Early Career Researcher Excellence Award yesterday, and I’m pretty darn chuffed.
“You have no qualifications in epidemiology! Your opinions don’t count” shouts a person with no qualifications in epidemiology, then states their own opinion.
Well actually, I do have a post grad qualification in epidemiology, and an honours degree in immunology & microbiology
Tweeps, thank you.
These pics might just look like a self indulgent fun fashion moments. But honestly I am overwhelmed every time y'all are supportive about my look.
I'm a chubby girl working in food & nutrition science. I'm constantly afraid of fat stigma. Y'all bust that. 💜
ABC Melbourne invited me to appear on The Conversation hour to speak on my area of expertise. Producer called last week to discuss content, told I would be part of a 7 min segment. Then they put me on the line ACT LIKE I'M A RANDOME CALLER let me say one thing & then ignore me.
I just tripped over, just walking, in a very public place. Not one single person asked me if I was ok, the 20 odd witnesses completely ignored me, except one random woman who did a kind of disgusted “tut” said “oh god” and rolled her eyes like me falling wrecked her day.
LOLing at the random trolls who come at me on here to call me fat.
I post a selfie almost everyday, so I’ve seen my body, you aren’t shocking or upsetting me. And if I had issues with my appearance I probably wouldn’t share so many selfies with the 15K people following me here.
I’m not letting the

& low carb diet tribe haters stop my morning food outfit selfie. But, I have posed (despite the bad light) in front of my PhD & Young Researcher award, since those (& my other degrees) are my qualifications, not my body size.
Golly, I'm posting about ableism and I forgot the alt text - its a lady with short grey hair in a wheelchair with me, a chonky lady sitting in open air with grass and trees behind. Both smiling!
Everyone keeps saying how great it is that Joe Biden has achieved so much “despite his stutter”.
To be very clear it’s not “despite his stutter” it is “despite societies bias against people who stutter and because he had the means to get therapy”.
Someone in a work meeting just said "we've all got kids..." as a passing comment.
What a strange assumption to make.
What a potentially hurtful assumption to make.
Not every adult professional has kids.
Your reality is not every other persons reality.
Trying to explain to the

virtual assistant “olive” that there is something in my order that shouldn’t be, and she says “don’t worry, you can keep it” but the extra item I think is the electronic device they use to scan the products to pack the order!
I’ll just leave this here for the rando’s who think my body is my business card. I’m sorry diet culture lead you to believe weight is the only marker of health. No one (even a fat nutrition scientist on the TV) owes you a justification for their body.
The

Carbs aren’t the enemy, they’re an important energy source. Sure not all carbs are equal (whole grain/high fibre FTW) but you don’t need to quit carbs, & if you do you might accidentally quit fibre too.
Carb haters are going to hate, just scroll on.
There's no such thing as a stupid question.
There is, however, such a thing as a question that you wouldn't need to ask if you read the lecture notes, lab worksheets and blackboard announcements.
There are average men who think they can beat Serena Williams at tennis, tech bros who think they can "biohack" their way out of aging, and now Hamish Blake who thinks... *checks notes* that he could just blag being a GP for the day. How is the patriarchy still in charge?
I don't tell my plumber how to fix pipes, I don't 'splain the law to my lawyer, I don't tell my hair dresser how to cut or colour hair... but yet every non-scientist seems to want to 'splain our own areas of study to us?
My partner volunteered to babysit a very small baby.
My partner knows absolutely nothing about babies. And quite frankly appears terrified by them.
As a result I will now be babysitting a very small baby.
21 days ago I left mum at hospital in a wheelchair, one brain surgery and a lot of rehab work later, this afternoon I took her home, walking carefully on her own, confidently with a walking stick.
My twin sister just had a baby, but of course no visitors are allowed right now. So instead the hospital sent a professional photographer around to take photo of all the babies and their mumma’s to send to the families. Bless.
Could men please stop saying they care about gender diversity because of their wives & daughters. It matters because we’re PEOPLE in our own right, not because of our relationships & proximity to you men.

Please don't email AFTER COB on Friday and then email again on Monday saying you emailed me last week and still haven't heard back. In work days, you emailed me today. I don't sit around waiting for emails.
Australia. We are allowed to visit each other but we are still supposed to remain distant while visiting. This is for our own safety. STOP POSTING SELFIES OF YOU HUGGING YOUR VISTORS!
Just got an email from a university higher up who has "Please note: it isn’t expected that outside of your normal working hours you consider or reply to emails" as their email signature.
Also to be clear, I’m in Australia, this is the Australian context where vaccines were not available, and where the government ran a scare campaign against the vax they did have. Not all us on Twitter are in the US or UK.
LOL, just blocked an MD who said my dress looked nice, but I shouldn't "promote donuts". Reasonable. Totally reasonable. How dare we even look at foods with carbs in them!
And he just laughed. But I didn’t really say it for him, I said it for the mostly female audience who I did not want to watch me sit quietly while i got walked on. I’m proud that I just said that and stopped, I didn’t get upset, I didn’t take it on as a me problem. That’s new!
I told
@DoctorKarl
he was wrong about something in my area of expertise once. He wasn’t a jerk about it. He said oh gosh, I must stop saying that then! And then he asked me to send him the resources & references to make sure he was correctly informed. That’s how you do it!
The exact opposite is correct.
I am NOT an expert in any single field of Science, Medicine or Engineering.
I simply accept the overwhelming majority opinion of the relevant Professional Bodies in any of those fields, eg, Astrophysics, Gastroenterology, Automotive Mechanics etc.
Are you starting university this year?
Pro-tip: On your student email account, set up a signature that says what degree you are studying and what classes you are taking. This gives some context to your lecturers/instructors when you email them.
Oh they let this chubby nutrition scientist on TV! I think I said fibre a few times too! Eat well be happy, don’t let anyone guilt you about your choices or body

Did you know that
#mushrooms
make vitamin D in the sun, but we grow them in the dark! If you flip them upside down on a sunny windowsill for 15 mins, just 7 button mushrooms (or 1 portabella) will give you pretty much all the vitamin D you need for a day! (Based on Aussie sun)
Yesterday our beautiful Mumma passed away after a long journey with Glioblastoma. She was strong & spectacular right until the end. I am so proud of her, and so grateful to have been part of her journey & to be part of what she made.
I’m ded.
I’m at a university event where all the higher-ups got put on the spot and asked to give a 2 minute talk on how they got into their positions. Career journey stuff. How they became a leader.
Dude just stands up and says “I’m a bloke.”
What a way to bloody own it
But that’s when I decide I was going to break my “don’t interrupt rule” and I said “I just want to be clear that wasn’t my unsaid subtext, that was literally my main point, and I do think I made it plainly & clearly enough that it didn’t need a man to repeat it for me.”
Dear Fat Friends,
You don't need to justify your reasons for being fat.
a) Being fat isn't a moral failing.
b) It's nobodies business
c) there isn't a hierarchy of fatness, we should not be some of us accepted as "justified" & others of us vilified.
I'm fat, deal with it.
🧵Last night I was on a careers panel. Some of the panelist were pretty “passionate” - kind of jumping in without being asked, I was determined not to do that - I’ve been working on being conscious of the person talking the most and loudest not being more valid. But…
I GOT A POTATO DRESS! People think they aren’t “allowed” to eat potatoes or they don’t count as veggies. LIES! Potatoes are super nutritious, just don’t make them ALL veggies, because they are higher energy than others. For healthy choices avoid fried, but that goes for all veg!
I know it's 2020 and so time is meaningless, but if you are asked to be one of 3 presenters to talk for a total of 15 minutes between the 3, if you go first please don't speak for 30 minutes all on your own.
I read recently that celeb/woo woman Gwyneth P starts her day with alkaline water+lemon. 😂 lemon is acidic, so thats normal water again! Also your body is REALLY good at buffering it’s pH (acid-alkaline balance) if your body is having trouble with that well, I’m sorry you dead.
Today’s outfit is fruit salad with pavlova earrings. For the international followers pavlova is meringue with cream & fruit on top. It’s origins are contested- we steal all New Zealand’s best stuff, but there’s claims it was made in the USA 100 years before it was named 🤷🏻♀️

Stop giving this jerky advice, check your privilege and start talking about the socioeconomic determinants of food choice and availability.
But seriously guys, if you hear a woman say something and you think it’s a good enough point to say it too, just acknowledge that it’s been said and you agree, you don’t need to pretend it’s new or actively say it’s new even. Or maybe just listen so you don’t miss it by accident.
So, ironically, while my twitter feed has been blowing up with

I was actually off having my first crack as a model.
This Aussie Xmas dress (Kangaroos & Xmas trees) goes on sale tomorrow. Pockets, inclusive sizing, comfy yet flattering IMO
Stop judging other people’s cooking, lives & choices. I have a PhD in Food Science & I have all these things in my kitchen. The “fresh is best” mantra is rich, ableist nonsense.
Went on TV to talk about diet culture. Then played hockey. A girl on our team works at a bakery, so she brought little cakes for the team for post match. The ref walks past & says “what are you doing ladies? You just ran it off & now you’re putting it all straight back on?”
A guy from school (who I haven't seen in many, many, many years) just messaged to let me know he had mowed the grass and tidied the garden around my brothers memorial. 😭
If you’re still reading I have a few points
1. Make sure your people know where to find your other people if shit goes down, the hunt hurts
2. Tell your friends you love them, I’m glad I did
3. Ladies-a heart attack in women is not like in the movies. Get educated on the signs♥️
PhD students stressed in these COVID days, remember you are the product we care about, not your thesis, we can sort everything else out as long as we keep you well.
I had a huge life disruption during my PhD, I understand the feels, but we'll work it out & you will thrive again.
#peaches
! Did you know that nectarines are actually just a type of peach with a mutation stopping the fuzz from growing on the skin. Regular peach trees sometimes randomly grown nectarines & nectarine trees sometimes grow normal peaches as the genes get switched on & off.
One year ago today, it was one month after mum died. I was starting to do normal things again. It was my first day back at the gym (I’d let it slide caring for her) as I walked back to the car and know number called. I nearly ignored it… 1/?
I just went on ABC radio Melbourne to explicitly give Melbourne permission to eat whatever heck they like (not that you need my permission). Loving the comfort food chats, you do you friends. Eat what makes you happy, no side serve of guilt. Food is more than just nutrients.
Someone I know recently resigned from their job & the most common reaction has been "but you are so passionate about your work!"
Stop milking passionate people in your organisations. Don't take their passion for granted. Don't use it as leverage. Passion alone isn't enough.
My MiL didn’t want to pay $100 for a cake for a party, so she’s making it. But she wants it to be perfect, so has purchased a bunch of equipment, made 3 practices and is currently sorting mixed sprinkles into different colours by hand so at this point the cake is about $300.
The demise of Jenny Craig does not symbolize the downfall of diet culture. It signals a shift from overt to covert diet culture. Watch out for wolves (diets) in sheep’s clothing (“lifestyles”, “wellness”, “well-being”, “challenges”, “fasting”).
