I’ve successfully deescalated teen fights at foster group homes. Teens who had knives, nunchucks, BRICKS. The only thing I was armed with was a *whistle* — there are ways to effectively & compassionately deescalate without killing CHILDREN. Invest in mental health.

Many ppl in jail are on waitlists for inpatient/outpatient treatment programs. Some die in jail while waiting. Many would not have been arrested if they had access to tx & community supports prior to arrest. More accessible & non-stigmatizing outpatient tx (and housing!) is key

Yes! And chronically homeless folks pick up warrants (mainly failure to appears bc they have no $, car, NOTICE bc no physical address to *receive* notice). Then they experience a mental health crisis, cops are called, name is run. Cops see warrant and...arrest. Happens every day.
