This morning it was still dark when my husband left for the ER. He said “I never thought I’d have a job where people thank me for my service and my son cries every night worrying I will die.”

Gronk had to have 1 liter of blood drained from his quad after Super Bowl 53. He’s in tears describing how he was crying in bed and couldn’t sleep because of pain...the night that he won a Super Bowl.
As I've said before, I just don't think Brady has gotten nearly enough praise for playing through this. What he did is remarkable. I generally don't like the whole "toughness" debate, this is about his ability to focus and perform under any kind of adverse condition.
My husband just told me that, while he was working in an ER full of COVID last night, he looked up for a second at a tv and saw college football stands full of maskless fans hugging and shouting. I don’t know how he does it. This isn’t sustainable.

I love how he gets rookie J.J. Taylor involved!
Not sure the running back was feelin' it as much as Cam. 🤣

Wonderful news for David Andrews and his family. Once an athlete is stabilized and a good level of anticoagulation (blood thinning) is achieved with IV meds, patients can be transitioned to oral (or sometime injectable) meds and sent home with outpatient follow-up. Good sign.
#Patriots
center David Andrews has been released from the hospital, according to a league source. He was treated for a blood clot in his lung as
@jeffphowe
was the first to report.
He got hit in the head twice. He got a tinted visor. He got smelling salts. And he was allowed to finish the game. These are missed opportunities to call a symptom a symptom on Thursday, not Friday. No blame or shame, we just have to learn and do better.
TJ Watt is in concussion protocol, per Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten. He came in yesterday morning experiencing symptoms.
Watt must be cleared by the independent neurologist before he can return to play. Steelers play next at Colts a week from today.
First one case, then two, then three. Finger pointing in Nashville or Foxborough isn’t helpful. If you want to point, look towards 345 Park Avenue for their lack of humility in dealing with this virus.
Patriots CB Stephon Gilmore has tested positive for COVID-19, as
@TomPelissero
reported.
So, for now, the Patriots have QB Cam Newton, CB Stephon Gilmore and practice squad DT Bill Murray on their Reserve/COVID-19 list.
Former

NFL training camp lower extremity (LEX) muscle strains have a huge cost. Players miss more time due to LEX strains than any other injury. So if you didn't care much about calf, groin, and hamstring strains this time of year, you may want to read on because the

Great insight from NFL “Turning Point” show on how Jason McCourty’s TD-saving play in Super Bowl LIII was a result, in part, of an in-game adjustment from a prior play that wasn’t covered well.
Ryan Shazier injury is a scary one. Direct axial loading injuries like that can lead to instability of the cervical spine. Prayers for him and his medical team.
My husband got his second shot this morning! Last March and April we cried a lot of tears worrying about his safety, but today we’re all doing a breakfast happy dance. Thank you scientists! ❤️

QB Josh Allen, who has a history of UCL sprain in 2018, appeared to suffer another UCL sprain on this play very late in the game. Threw a nice deep ball right after, but was shaking out the elbow/may have been dealing w some nerve stretch symptoms. Injury to watch this wk.
A young man suffered what appeared to be a cardiac event this evening. He immediately received CPR, was transported to an ER. The one comfort that any medical person can offer is that he is a young athlete who got immediate CPR/AED. Pray/hope those things make the difference. 💛
Mac Jones was at Alabama when the tightrope surgery for high ankle sprains, which can significantly shorten recovery, initially took root. Here he is back then talking about it with SI: "We've had guys that came back pretty fast. Insanely fast. It's unbelievable." (link below)
That means a significant tear, which was the fear. Team source, just now, said he'd be surprised if Jones avoids surgery, esp knowing it could speed up healing. We'll see how team and player decide to play this. "Mac will do what it takes to get back, we know that" said source.
Update: Around 24 hrs after my 2nd vaccine, I got flu-like symptoms. Body aches, mild headache, temp creeping up but not a fever. I still had to function with the kids so I took some Ibuprofen. Feel much better now. Just want to share an honest experience with you all. 💪
My experience with the

: I got my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine 3 wks ago. My only symptom was a sore arm for about 12 hrs. My second dose was yesterday afternoon. My arm is still a little sore and I’m a bit tired, but otherwise well. Remote school duty today!
If you begrudgingly wear a mask but don’t really think they work, check out this article. I didn’t realize how effective a simple cotton mask could be. Very cool read.
Nobody is riding in on a white horse to save the

season. Not Julian Edelman, coming off a 4-game suspension and ACL injury that is not yet in the rearview mirror. Not Josh Gordon. Not one single athlete. It's going to take every coach and player on that squad to do it.
Joe Burrow wearing a heat and vibration/massage device when he comes off the field to keep his calf warm and loose. Hard to say for sure with the compression but that calf looks atrophied compared to his left.
Von Miller took 17 days away from training and is still feeling the negative effects on his lungs, something patients recovering from COVID-19 often report.
It’s been 7 days since I received my first dose of the COVID vaccine. I still wear a mask, I’m not eating out, and I’m not flying anywhere any time soon.

standout center Frank Ragnow, who left last night’s game with a scary-looking injury, suffered just a minor ankle sprain, source said. Some good news.
#Celtics
center Kristaps Porzingis injured his left ankle in the 3Q of game 2. He tore the flexor retinaculum of his inner ankle, which is a small band of tissue that holds, among other things, the tibialis posterior tendon in place, causing the tendon to pop out of its groove.
A year ago, my husband and I responded to a medical emergency on a flight. Today, the patient sent us a letter updating us on his health and told us all of the things he’s been able to do with this “extra” year of his life. Insurance companies and EMRs be damned - I love my job.
I did not see Demaryius Thomas being a contributor let alone a member of the Patriots roster day

The genuineness of
@RobGronkowski
is what I think of when people say “there will never be another Gronk.” Sure, his football is ridiculous, but you can’t fake this kind of compassion and joy.
Gronk brought his big personality to Barbara Bush Children's Hospital – and he also brought the kids another big gift that will help them have fun even after he leaves ❤️️
THIS is what youth sports should be. Ref stops play for a “teachable” moment with 8/9 year olds, players of all different levels, here to learn and have fun. No $1000 per season price tag, no $100 training sessions, no driving an hour for “better” competition. What are we doing?
Everything Belichick said is accurate. Vaccines do not solve every problem. Nobody said they did. Vaccines combined with proven infection control methods (masking, ventilation, lowering community spread) work together to decrease transmission & give teams a competitive advantage.
Bill Belichick: "Your implication that the vaccination solves every problem...has not been substantiated. The number of players and coaches and staff members who have been infected with COVID after being vaccinated is a pretty high number. I wouldn't lose sight of that."
Bucs and Tom Brady still trying to finalize contract language as of Wednesday night and those discussions will go into Thursday, per source. Contract language more challenging this off-season than any time in recent memory. No problems forseen with Bucs-Brady, but no deal yet.
Update on the Joejuan Williams arrest. According to the Tennessean, police found acetaminophen hydrocodone prescription pills, valacyclovir hydrocodone pills, "a large amount of marijuana," hand-rolled marijuana cigarettes and illegal paraphernalia inside the SUV.

A mild AC separation carries a rather quick recovery for a TE. A “mild dislocation” of the shoulder is another story (he may have had a similar injury with Miami). Hoping it’s not a major setback for Gesicki, but frustrating nonetheless. Will have to wait for clarification.
#Patriots
TE Mike Gesicki, who has been impressive early on in camp, suffered a mild dislocated shoulder during yesterday’s practice, source said. While nothing is given, the hope is he’s back for Week 1 despite the AC joint injury.
Last night as I tucked my youngest son into bed he said “I hope Daddy doesn’t get Coronavirus” He saw my tears coming “Relax, Mommy, he has a mask...but what if he has an itch and takes it off and scratches but forgets to wash his hands?” He’s five.

Don’t be lulled by the fact that things look ok on your street. Boston doctors are reporting that things have really picked up this weekend. Don’t thank a healthcare worker and then turn around and let your kid have a friend over. Please continue to socially distance.

Stephon Gilmore played 100% of the defensive snaps on Monday night. This is after he was in close contact with Cam Newton and flew on a plane with other people who were in close contact with the QB.
I tried to play it cool, but I don't have it in me. When

Lots of news out of the White House and the NFL today, but the message is clear:
🚨DAILY TESTING DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE PROTECTED🚨.
Whether you are the POTUS, an NFL athlete, or a parent watching your kid play sports...
Wear a mask, physically distance, and wash your hands 👊
Blood clots in the lungs are called pulmonary emboli. They’re dangerous because they stop the lungs from exchanging oxygen and CO2. Treatment includes blood thinners, which increase the risk of bleeding internally while playing football. More in a few.

No, not at all. I'm disappointed because rather than giving us a shout out for our years of hard work, expertise, and accomplishment, you chose to compliment us on looking hot in our outfits. Looking hot doesn't get shit done for our patients - being a kickass doctor does.
I remember once, in the locker room after a game, two of Tom Brady's children were visiting. Tom went out of his way to call his children over to "meet my friend Karen."
@kguregian
is not only kind and great at her job, she's also well-respected by the athletes she covers.
If the NFL votes for daily testing of its players, the breakdown of weekly testing of major pro sports leagues will look roughly like this:
NFL - 40,320 tests/wk
MLB - 10,000
NBA - 8,700
NHL - 8,700
MLS - 5,000
That's 73,000 tests/wk for a chance at pro sports.

QB Tom Brady has been dealing with throwing elbow issues for weeks now.
@MikeGiardi
reports that Brady has lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), a degenerative process in the tendons at the elbow responsible for cocking the wrist back & supination (rotating the palm up)
The photo on the right is a test for a UCL tear. I'm worried that it was positive. The fact that he was ruled out immediately without an xray and doesn't even want to try to grip a football is concerning for a full-thickness (unstable) tear. Those require surgery.
Saints QB Drew Brees has been removed from the game after he hit his throwing hand on the hand of Aaron Donald during a pass rush.
Teddy Bridgewater is now in at QB.
Bill Belichick talking about being so appreciative and respectful of what his athletes do every day is a very meaningful thing. The athletes have the physical and mental skills and carry the largest burden of risk. I appreciate that he says that out loud.
As a Mom and a doctor I am ANGRY that kids are being murdered in schools because it’s EASY to buy a gun and HARD to get behavioral healthcare. This sh*t is fixable. It’s a matter of public health. Stop making excuses.
