I really like it when distance runners go low carb...except when they're mine!! Hey, if O2 is a limiting factor, why the hell would a track middle or long distance runner want to use fat rather than glucose when the latter generates more ATP per mol of O2?
@UC_RISE
Unpublished data!!! -
@LouiseMBurke
gives us a glimpse into elite racewalk study Supernova 2 - and shows High carb training resulted in a significant 4% improved 10km race, ketogenic group went -3% worse (significant) and periodized carb 2% improvement (non-significant).
Loss of motor control and power in a marathoner is often the result of over-ambitious race tactics. To suggest medically unqualified runners stop to pay lipservice to a sidelined and accompanied competitor and risk inducing their own power supply failure is uninformed folly.
Just read that Australian athletes are put under too much stress by medal targets. Seriously? Medal targets conjured up by administrators are irrelevant to coaches and athletes I know. Not an issue or worth thinking about. We just concentrate on getting the job done on the day.
Very pleased for induction into the ACT Hall of Fame. I often admire the array of champions, coaches, administrators in the

17 years ago astute teacher/coach Brad Green told me a skinny kid might be worth a shot. Spot on Brad, with silver, gold, gold in consecutive Com Games marathons and punching above weight at the Olympics, Michael Shelley became one of Australia's greatest championship performers
Very pleased with my longest coached athlete, 45 yr-old
@LisaWeightman
today; 3rd in the Osaka Marathon in another Olympic qualifier, 2:24:43. Better be careful not to mix her training up with that of my 17 yr-old Cam Myers (who ran his 2nd 1500 qualifier last Thursday, 3:33:50)!
ACT runner Cam Myers just ran the 5th fastest ever U20 mile, with his 3:50.15 run in Eugene today. His Lake Ginninderra School principal is former Aussie champion distance runner Gerard Barrett. Don’t worry Gerard, I'll make sure Cam gets his assignments done!
Sad to hear the passing of John Landy. A wonderful contribution to Victoria and Australia in so many ways. A lifelong athletic hero of mine and valued mentor in both the training of middle distance runners and importance of providing physical activity opportunities for our kids.
What a champ we have in 800m runner Keeley Small...and what a career to look forward to. And top stuff to Philo Saunders....my buddy, former PhD student and athlete has graduated with first class honours as her coach!
Keeley Small's stunning 800m 2:00.81 is an Australian U20 & U18 record and the 9th fastest U18 in history.

Second last day of Olympic team 14-day single room quarantine in Brisbane. Then back to Canberra where lockdown means relative freedom and seeing human beings. Got my 45 min motel room jog/8 station circuit done twice every day. Hope I'm not charged for wearing out the carpet.
Happy with my 3 1500 runners Cam Myers (1st in 3:33.20), Jye Edwards (3:34.42), Connor Whiteley (3:36.19) at Bankstown last night. Former world champ Jake Wightman (3:34.31) was impressive early in his Olympic prep as were Aussies Jesse Hunt (3:33.64) and Callum Davies (3:35.14).
Well, Michael

? I'm going to miss you two not being in future photos showing your medals..
Hey whats going on?...our fastest half marathoner Sinead Diver 41 years young and our fastest marathoner Lisa Weightman 39. And both would appear to be improving. Top stuff. Are 40's the new 20's for these two?
@UC_RISE
So happy to hear there are no major concerns for couragious Scot Callum Hawkins' health. Gut wrenching scenes of marathon exaustion at 40k that noone, and particularly no Australian, ever wanted to see. Colour of a medal pales to insignifance in relation to an athlete's health.
Ex AIS sports scientist David Martin is now head Sports Scientist at the Philadelphia 76ers and building a huge reputation in the States. Not unexpected....he'd built up a huge reputation here in Australia too. Great to catch up today Dave...How do we get you back?
Waiting to hear if my long-term champ
@LisaWeightman
is selected for her 5th Olympic marathon!! Being 3rd fastest qualifier with 3 qualifiers in the designated period, including a podium finish in gold label marathon (Osaka) and a recent PB of 2.23:15 she ticks all the boxes🤞
Good weather at 1800m here in Font Remeu. Been here 10 days, my two 1500m boys didn't overdo things before their Nice hitout July 12; Jye Edwards winning (3:34) and Rorey Hunter 5th (3.36 PB). Looking for some improvements over the next few races....

Our champion walker Jarrad Tallent finally receives his 2 WC gold medals. Huge thanks to former AIS colleagues Michael Ashenden and Robin Parisotto who kicked off the passport method to weed out the 3 cheaters, Italian Schwazer and Russians Kirdyapkin and Erokhin.
Looking forward to the Commonwealth Games Athletics trials next weekend. Always great entertainment. We coaches all do our best to help our athletes get their best performances out on the day. But not much point in wishing them good luck... that's got very little to do with it.
Aussie women shine in Valencia marathon: Genevieve Gregson 2:23:08; Isobel Batt-Doyle 2:23:27; Lisa Weightman 2:24:18; Eloise Wellings 2:25:47. And they’re tough. Weightman’s pre-race sore throat/nausea was a worry, but a DNF wasn't an option. She tested COVID positive post-race.

My middle-distance boys enjoying (perhaps experiencing is a better choice of word) a bit of low air pressure red cell stimulus work last Saturday up at Perisher. Aussie National 1500m will be a wonderfully competitive event this year!
To increase physical activity/reduce obesity we have to develop physically literate kids...to exploit our early DNA driven love of physically active play. Then nurture it thru adolescence before our understandably selfish genes seduce us to the pleasures of energy conservation.

Yes you should have been happy with a 2 min 800 at 15 Nick. Some 15 yr-olds have a biological age of 18, others are still 13. One good reason for late bloomers to be patient and seek PBs, not race placings; and their longer improvement curves often have them laughing last anyway.

Pleased to be asked how/where the AIS will now have best impact. Tasked with developing the very successful AIS coach driven Sports Science model in Canberra in 1981, I know the AIS heart and soul is still there. It just needs some strength & conditioning to be world class again.
Fantastic Aussie distance runs in LA. Congrats to new Aust W 5k record holder Rose Davies & coach Scott Westcott (an athlete of mine many moons ago!) and to Stewie McSweyn and Morgan McDonald (coaches Dathan Ritzenhein and Nic Bideau) for their excellent Olympic 5k qualifiers.

Nice article on our new champ Stewie McSweyn but one error. The writer suggested Stewie might be overqualified to teach PE. With PE a major contributor to physical literacy and future quality of life in the 21st century it's difficult for anyone to be overqualified!
@UC_RISE
Absolutely....and we have randomised controlled trial evidence of PE-induced 10 point improvements in NAPLAN scores (Telford et al, Am J Public Health 102:368-374 2012). Has that order of improvement ever been demonstrated by increasing the time our kids sit in a classroom?
I was reminded of an incredibly popular sitcom of the late 1950's, which I really enjoyed watching on our brand new 21 inch black and white TV.... called "Father Knows Best". This is certainly true of Jess Hull's dad and coach Simon. Keep up the fine work, Simon!

Always great to read Brookes discussing lactate. But for decades now we've used blood La simply to gauge reliance on anaerobic energy. The lower the La (and so H+) at the bell, and higher it is at the finish, the faster the last lap; whatever the actual cause of fatigue
@UC_RISE
For years "lactate" has been the devil. It's not! Correlations w/ fatigue aren't causative: if you read anything today, please read this: . (now associated acidosis (pH) is another story, and also controversial, but it's not lactate!).
Fair enough, but bear in mind that carb restriction will reduce average power output in any high intensity endurance event e.g. the average running speed in any event up to and including the marathon. Not a concern if all you're interested in is running slower and finishing
My Perisher Valley group of middle-distance runners show their team work and skills in the kitchen to match their teamwork and skills on the training track. No way too many cooks spoiled this broth.
Consistent with the findings that physical inactivity, not diet, is the main driver of community youth obesity, some people I know eat and drink huge amounts; yet remain exceptionally lean. You've guessed it, they're my group of middle-distance and marathon runners.

Well.....sort of new....the campaign escalating Aussie medals from 4 to 54 at the Olympics between1980 to 2000 was kicked off at the AIS in 81. Pretty basic really...good combination of coaching, sports med/science and sensible coach/athlete/sports sci/med driven administration.
