Morning!
Start the week off like Edward Seager and nothing will slow you down.
Edward Seagar. From Private to Lieutenant General.
Lantern jawed Scouse warrior, survivor of the light brigades charge and an example of social mobility in Victorian England.
This will be a 🧵
Since the Napoleon trailers were released i have been discussing/moaning about the modern directors penchant for filming everything through a dirty oven door.
As an antidote here are some stills from the Battle of the Rive plate. Filmed in glorious technicolour!
The Royal Navy are having fun off the coast of Yemen. And not for the first time.
Got me thinking to back to our first troubles in the Gulf of Aden in 1609.

Just to help Republic out with their self-awareness once again. The last time we became a Republic we captured Jamaica and filled it with slaves. So the fundamental link with slavery is with the Republicans themselves. Not the Royal Family.
Have been daydreaming about Redcoats vs Predator.
Set in 1760s India it features and EIC company, French deserters and Thuggees making a last stand at a ruined Kali temple.
Happy to say its a colonization allegory to get funding.
If anyone knows any

Sword trip today!
Travelling to deepest Berks. Which isn't as bad as it sounds. Once there going to see some right beauties. Including a very very special sword.
Pics later.
Tried to buy this Royal navy sword. Got outbid.
I liked it as it had the owners initials (GFWG) stamped inside the guard.
I did some basic research and saw a life of ups and downs and ups for GFWG. So thought I would share this brief history of a Hero of the Empire:
The Napoleonic war arrived in Japan
#OTD
in 1808.
HMS Phaeton entered Nagasaki harbour without permission looking for Dutch trading ships. Defying the protective the Japanese fort.
The Fort was powerless due its commander trousering all the funds. He later committed seppuku.
Its Blackadder day!!! The greatest sitcom ever made (just ahead of Fawlty towers).
Many people rightly point to the final scene as one of the great moments of TV. The tragedy of Captain Darling is unfairly skipped past IMO
1689
Two Danish soldiers from King Williams army fell out over a girl and duelled. Lt Daniel Straker lost. Cornet Johannes Bellow won but then lost his head on the block.
This plaque on St Marys Church, Beverley remembers them.
Its Hero of the Empire Colin Blair.
From a family of warriors. Colin served in both the first and second world wars. He served with the Scots Guards during WW1 before being invalided out in June 1918. When WW2 rolled round Colin was ready for another crack and joined the DCLI.
Happy Chateauguay day!
A most splendid victory for the heavily outnumbered Canadians! Where De Salaberry bamboozled those pesky American chancers and sent them paddling back down lake Champlain!
1796 Light Cavalry Sabre looking for a new home!
A stalwart friend to British Cavalrymen as they charged across the Napoleonic battlefields.
This one was forged from Birmingham steel by John Gill over 200 years ago.
DM me if you want to know more
Its Hero of the Empire Richard Wolfe of the Scots Greys.
Richard was part of the Desert column sent to rescue Charles Gordon at Khartoum.
He was killed at the Battle of Abu Klea.
Likeness here:
A lot of discussion about sharpened Swords. So here are the Sharpies in order of service:
NCO/Drummers mystery hanger 1780s
1786-96 Sabre
1788-96 L Cav
1796-1821 L Cav
1803ish Bombay Marine (unconfirmed)
1796-1821 L Cav
1821-55ish L Cav
1895-15 Blois-Johnsons Infantry Chopper
Got a lot going on atm. Having to do proper work etc and not had time to sit down and post.
Anyway have 5 mins so here's Thomas Ridley's Peninsular medal with 11 clasps!
Todays featured regiment are the Groundsmans Rifles!
Known as the 'Old Sods' they were the only fighting force to leave a battlefield looking better than when they found it.
Happy Buxar day!
A splendid victory over the combined forces of the Moghul Emperor, the Nawab of Oudh and Mir Qasim.
Outnumbered but better organised. The British absorbed the allied attack and then broke it. The allies fled the field leaving the hapless Emperor behind.
You see. This is what i like. Colin died 60 years ago. He did what he could at times when it was needed. He was married twice but had no children. Not many will remember him.
Yet here on twitter. Just for a day. 5500 people saw him and many gave him a like. Excellent stuff 😎

More period “Predator” films, please. I think “Prey” showed a return to the franchise’s potential greatness. Give me one in the Wild West. Feudal Japan. The Zulu Nation. Give me a Predator slaughtering Conquistadors and Aztecs with a Jaguar Warrior taking it down.
Deleted scene from Redcoats vs Predator
Look. You did well, you really did. You just don't have Laser weapons or a cloaking device.
Also, Red in the Jungle?
Its Hero of the Empire John Worthington Adams.
A real old India hand. John joined the Army as a 16y.o. in 1780. He fought against the Rohillas. Was at the capture of Seringapatam. Held commands in Kumaon, Nagpur, the Deccan. Took Chanda in 181 8 and was was at Bharatpur in 1826.
