Many think that the first time when an Ethiopian force defeated an Egyptian force was in the reign of Emperor Yohannes IV in the Battle of Gundet, but that is not true. In 1837 the governor of Dembiya, Dejazmach Kinfu, Defeated a large Egyptian force who tried to invade Ethiopia.

I don’t know how many people know it but Emperor Yohannes IV spent more time in Begemder/Gondar than he did in Tigray. Yohannes capital for most of his reign was in Debre Tabor, where he lived for 9 straight years. It was only in 1881 that he shifted his capital to Mekele.

The first invasion of the Oromo into the civilisation of Ethiopia was into the Ethiopian province of Bale, which the Oromo invaded and settled in masses and stoled it from Ethiopia, up until 3 centuries latter were Emperor Menelik II restored the province back to Ethiopia hands.

The area of what is now called Welega used be the home of the provinces and people of Damot and Gafat. But as a result of the Oromo invasion to Ethiopia in Middle of the 16th century, the inhabitants of Damot and Gafat were pushed north of the Abbay and took shelter in Gojjam.

Mansfield Parkyns that lived in Tigray for 3 years Between 1843-1846 and stated that the name Tigray is applied to the area East of the Tekeze river. While the Name Amhara is applied to the area West of that river.
