Connor McDavid is so far beyond any other player in the NHL
It's not like the old Gretzky and Lemieux days, or Crosby and Ovechkin
There's McDavid, and then there's literally everyone else
@jduffyrice
It's absolutely criminal that Mr. Robot never received the same kind of widespread popularity that a show like Breaking Bad got
It had enormous ambitions, pulled everything off, and stuck an incredible landing that lesser shows would have failed to do. A true masterpiece
Are the Dallas Stars the envy of the entire NHL right now?
Currently contending for the Stanley Cup, but most for their best players are 25 years old or younger, so they're probably going to KEEP COMPETING for the Cup for years and years to come
It's hard watching Jamie Benn these days. The guy who used to go "Beast Mode" on a regular basis is a total ghost on the majority of his shifts, and sometimes entire games
He's making $9.5M AAV but is playing like he should be making $3.5M. That's an enormous problem for Dallas
Ryan Merkley is still without a contract for 23-24, and it seems like his NHL hopes might already be over at 22 years old
The downward spiral of his career was tough to watch:
*2016: 1st overall pick in the OHL
*2018: 21st overall NHL pick
*2023: traded
*2023: not re-signed
Seems like a fun time to remind Dallas Stars fans that:
- Miro Heiskanen is only 22
- Jason Robertson is only 22
- Jake Oettinger is only 23
- Denis Gurianov is only 24
- Roope Hintz is only 25
All those guys have many good years of hockey still ahead of them
The Dallas Stars are an organization that is currently transitioning between an old core (Benn, Seguin, Klingberg and Radulov) and a new core (Heiskanen, Oettinger, Hintz, Robertson)
Even though they lost this series, their future is still shining bright
What happened in the end of the Dallas-St. Louis game just now is some of the worst officiating that I've ever seen in the NHL. That was flat-out embarrassing
The Kraken would be a big, bold, ridiculous, fun name for a hockey team, so I really hope this happens.
Too many NHL teams have boring names and personas. Just imagine how much entertainment value you could get out of a team called the Kraken. Let's get crazy!
There's been much discussion lately about the "Dallas model" of scouting. And yes, their scouting has been undeniably great lately
But that's only half the story
What other teams should be emulating, if anything, is the Dallas model of DEVELOPMENT
Here's what that looks like:
How is it possible for Joe Pavelski to literally spit blood in front of the refs and only have that high-sticking penalty be 2 minutes?
Isn't that an automatic double-minor?
The Dallas Stars better be prepared to offer Max Domi a lot of money in the summer, because this team has reached a new rung on the ladder ever since adding him
I don't think he's close to maxing out his impact with the team, either. Once he's more settled in he'll get better
There are two absolutely bonkers point streaks currently ongoing in the WHL at the same time:
* Connor Bedard - 35 games, 90 points
* Logan Stanooven - 30 games, 67 points
I'll just get this on record now: I think the Montreal Canadiens are going to be a powerhouse NHL team in the next 3-5 years
I love how they've managed their assets and salary cap. They're already trending upwards, and their prospect pipeline will keep the big club stocked full
Thomas Harley is so damn good. I loved scouting him in his draft year, and I've loved following his career since then. And he's still just getting warmed up
He's another fantastic example of why scouts need to focus on upside and why teams need to prioritize prospect development
@awoodustin
There's a movie he starred in called Drive Angry that's a perfect example of this
It's incredibly cheesy and campy, and everyone in the cast knows it, having fun with their roles and not taking the movie very seriously... everyone except Cage, who is 100% serious and dialled in
Wow, this is... bad. Really bad! I have no idea why Dallas did this
Dellandrea is still just 23, and if nothing else, has a lot of NHL games to go as a Bottom 6 forward
A 4th-rounder is significantly less valuable. The odds of drafting a guy as equally good as Dell is very low
On July 1, 2014, the Dallas Stars signed Patrick Eaves to a $650K deal
On February 24, 2017, Dallas traded Eaves to Anaheim for a conditional pick that became a 1st-rounder
On June 23, 2017, Dallas traded that pick to move up and select Jake Oettinger
And here Oettinger is now
Dallas Stars 2021 1st-rounder Wyatt Johnston leads the entire OHL in scoring right now, with 60 points in 31 games
He is currently riding a 9-game point streak, with 22 points in that span. He's also on a streak of 4 straight games scoring 3 points or more
🔥🔥🔥
Ryan Suter has had a good season overall, but it's kind of maddening to see him struggling and being a liability in the Western Conference Finals... again... after the exact same thing happened last year
I've said this many times before, but it's really amazing how well the Dallas Stars are set up for the future
Heiskanen. Oettinger. Robertson. Hintz. Gurianov. Harley. Tufte. Peterson. Dellandrea. Damiani. Johnston. Stankoven. And then a bunch of other prospects who have a shot
Tweets like this keep popping up, but they're fucking ridiculous and need to be called out
Some of the very worst people keep posting P*tgrave's photo and insinuating malicious intent, because they know that outright racism generates tons of clicks
And Twitter will do nothing
Dallas has suuuuuch a bad habit where their goaltender will get red hot and then everyone else will stop working and let the goalie do everything
They are hanging Jake Oettinger out to dry right now and it's embarrassing. That's a failure of leadership
Byfield is example
#385727
that some elite prospects just need a little more time than others to adjust to the NHL
...and don't be surprised when Juraj Slafkovsky soon becomes example
#385728
Sometimes I wonder how much bigger Miro Heiskanen's profile would be if he played in a hockey market that got more media attention
Because he's absolutely dynamite, and doesn't get talked about nearly enough outside of the Dallas market
As of right now I fully expect Chicago to pick Artyom Levshunov at 2nd, for two reasons:
1) Their system has many good young forwards and LHD, but very few RHD
2) They recently traded up from 20th to 18th, and there should be at least one high-end forward still available at 18
NHL scouts are always looking for trends. I wonder if tall, rangy D will be priorities in 2024 because of this:
- Adam Boqvist was picked before Evan Bouchard
- Ty Smith went before K'Andre Miller
- Bowen Byram went before Mo Seider
- Victor Soderstrom went before Thomas Harley
Sucks for the Canucks, but what I really want to know right now is what's happening with the Rangers and their scouting and development
Kravtsov and Lias Andersson were huge fails for the organization, and Lafrenière and Kakko might end up the same way. All Top 10 picks!
Jim Nill deserves so, so, so much credit for the team that he has built. This is a talented, deep, balanced team that truly could go all the way
And a special stick tap to Director of Scouting Joe McDonnell, who also has his fingerprints all over this roster
Wanted to give a specific stick tap to Sam Steel
Top prospect coming into the WHL, WJC gold medalist, star at the Memorial Cup, NHL 1st-rounder. Never quite became the offensive threat that many people thought, but reinvented his game. Now he's a go-to defensive guy for Dallas
Matt Duchene has arguably been the best forward on the Dallas Stars so far this season
And as a reminder: he's only making $3M this season against the Stars' salary cap
The value that he is providing right now is through the roof. What hilarious highway robbery by Jim Nill
Ryan Suter really isn't leaving the Stars any option other than buying him out this summer, is he?
If this is how poorly he's playing in the semifinals now then you're not winning the Cup with him in the next two years. Save the cap space and let Harley and Lundqvist step up
I don't want to believe that the NHL decided that wasn't a goal just because the league didn't want such a big game to end in such an anticlimactic way...
But I don't know what else to believe
Tonight was a perfect example of what makes the Stars such a great hockey team
Offense? Rolling
Defense? Stifling
Goaltending? Steadying
When the team is on its game, there just aren't any holes
Aug 9: Pavelski goal with 32 seconds left
Aug 13: Oleksiak goal with 40 seconds
Aug 16: Pavelski goal with 12 seconds, Radulov goal in OT
Sept 4: Kiviranta goal with 3:30, again in OT
Sept 10: Radulov goal in OT
Sept. 14: Kiviranta goal with 3:47, Gurianov in OT
Incredible.
@MichelleRempel
This is massively embarrassing. I can't believe anyone thought this was a good idea.
If your goal is to give Alberta an even bigger black eye on the international stage, and further drive away outside investment and young workers, you're succeeding
Logan Stankoven has wasted no time getting acclimated to the AHL. He's now up to 5 goals and 9 points in 6 games, which leads the Texas Stars
Oh, and Mavrik Bourque is second in scoring, with 8 points in 6 games
That prospect pipeline just keeps flowing and flowing for Dallas
The draft rankings that everyone wanted to see today is the one from Bob McKenzie and his secret panel of NHL scouts, but every year over the last few I've put together and shared my own personal list, and I decided to keep that streak going in 2024
Here's my Top 32, with tiers:
I can't get over Arizona drafting both Dmitri Simashev and Daniil But. I love it because they:
1) Didn't let geopolitics get in their way
2) Swung big on long-term upside
3) Drafted two junior teammates, which makes it more likely both guys want to join the troubled organization
37-year-old Joe Pavelski is leading the Dallas Stars in scoring again, and as he does his legend continues to grow
It's incredibly impressive and rare how his exceptional hockey sense, competitiveness and work ethic continue to make up for his size and lack of foot speed
Logan Stankoven becomes the first AHLer this year to reach 50 points, in just 38 games played, and he does it dramatic fashion
What an absurd rookie professional season he's having
The Leafs won't have Auston Matthews and will be having their 3rd-string goalie make his first NHL start...
... this seems precisely like the type of game that Dallas will lose in agonizing fashion
Erik Källgren has the home net at
#leafs
morning skate. It looks like he'll make his first NHL start tonight vs. Dallas.
The goaltending plot thickens.
This Dallas Stars team so far looks night and day different from the team they were last year. It's dramatic
They're skating circles around Nashville right now
Absolutely incredible work by Montreal here
Laine is undeniably an enigma and there's no guarantee his game bounces all the way back...but the Habs can easily afford to take him on as a reclamation project, they dealt from a position of strength, AND they RECEIVE a 2nd
Larceny!
This whole play by Wyatt Johnston to set this goal up is so goddamn high level. Not only does he read the opposing breakout perfectly and hustle on the backcheck to make the steal, but peep the no-look pass to Hintz too
How is he still only 20 years old? Doesn't seem possible
Between Miro Heiskanen, Jake Oettinger, Jason Robertson and Jacob Peterson I think it's safe to say that no other team in the NHL did better at the 2017 draft than Dallas did
Dallas Stars 2021 1st-rounder Wyatt Johnston is having an absolutely monster season in the OHL
He has 45 points in 26 games so far. Not only is that good enough for 4th in OHL scoring, he has 19 more points than his closest teammate, so he's doing a LOT of heavy lifting himself
I started looking up Druskinis after seeing this news, and saw something that made my jaw drop: he was teammates with Mitchell Miller during the 2021-22 USHL season
One of the most historic towns and popular tourist destinations in Canada could completely burn to the ground in the next couple of days. And there's little stopping a similar fire from doing the same to nearby Banff in the future
Climate change doesn't care if you believe in it
I don't think I'll ever fully understand how the Dallas Stars can do THAT for stretches but look AHL-caliber at other times... sometimes in the same game! Tonight it happened in the same period!
Rich Peverley is a secret weapon for Dallas
I don't think it's a coincidence that the Stars found a LOT more success with young players after he started working for the team in a development role. He's now the Director of Player Personnel
If Dallas wins the Cup he gets a twirl
@TheDraftAnalyst
I disliked Carcillo as a player, but I have a ton of respect for what he's doing now in support of CTE awareness and trying to rid abuse from hockey. People change
Also: hurt people hurt people. Maybe Carcillo lashed out on-ice because of his abuse. That's what Theo Fleury did
The returns are very early... but Dallas drafting Wyatt Johnston 23rd overall in 2021 is currently looking like one of the best value draft picks of the past decade, if not longer
The Dallas Stars have an amazing track record lately for getting value out of their high draft picks
Hintz, Robertson, Oettinger, Johnston, Harley, Bourque and Stankoven are all outperforming where they got selected, and would all go higher (or much, much higher) in re-drafts
Miro Heiskanen is still, unsurprisingly, absolutely phenomenal at hockey
I've never seen a 20-year-old defenseman with such an advanced, elite understanding of how to play defense
Since people are talking about the Stanley Cup being dented last night, now is a good time to re-up the story about how it got dented in 1999 when Guy Carbonneau threw it off a balcony while the Dallas Stars were partying with Pantera.
As told by drummer Vinnie Paul:
With an Edmonton series win the majority of the hockey world is now rooting for a Calgary win today so that there will be a Battle of Alberta. Prison rules! Thunderdome! Cats and dogs living together!
But a Dallas win, to ruin everyone else's fun, would be VERY on brand for them
* Making young players fully earn their NHL roster spots, usually when they're "overripe"
* Having a LOT of team personnel focused on prospect development, at different levels and in different countries
* Scouts trust dev staffers to help the prospects (ex: Robertson's skating)
Peyton Krebs only has one gear: 5th
Kootenay has been trailing all game and won't make the playoffs, but Krebs is still playing like it's a Game 7. His puck skills, hockey IQ and defensive abilities are all exceptional,. He's also being targeted physically and hasn't backed down
I think there's a very big gulf between "Josh Anderson the player" and "Josh Anderson the idea"
I think the Habs really fell in love with an "idea" of Anderson and what he brings to the table that probably isn't mirrored in reality
Not only did Dallas land Miro Heiskanen, Jason Robertson and Jake Oettinger from the 2017 draft, it also looks like they made THE steal of the 2021 draft by landing Wyatt Johnston at 23rd. Ty Dellandrea has been fantastic this season too
This team should be good for a long while
The biggest reason why Wyatt Johnston is succeeding right now in the NHL as a 19-year-old is because his hockey sense is through the roof
This is a textbook pickpocket to set up this game-winning overtime goal. Pulled off like a seasoned vet
This is an *amazing* trade for Dallas, because they don't move a 1st rounder (which was the rumored asking price for Tanev), they don't move one of their best prospects, AND there is retained salary
Jim Nill just out-Jim Nill'd himself
Trade is official.
Calgary sends D Chris Tanev to Dallas. New Jersey also involved in a three-way deal.
#Flames
receive a 2024 second-round pick, 2026 conditional third-round pick, prospect D Artem Grushnikov. Calgary retains 50% of Tanev’s salary.
Watching Roope Hint go from being the 49th overall pick in 2015 to one of the best players in the NHL has had such a profound influence on how I scout
When a player THIS good gets picked that late it would be foolish to not obsessively dig further into it
Is now a bad time to remind everyone that the Edmonton Oilers could have been playing Jake Oettinger right now, but they passed over him in the 2017 draft?
Jim Nill doesn't get enough credit for how good he is at filling out every corner of the Stars roster
EX: the Sam Steel and Craig Smith signings this summer were brilliant. Both guys are producing every penny worth of value out of their contracts
And that concludes the 2023 NHL draft!
Some players who weren't picked that I liked (and still like): Isac Hedqvist, Matthew Soto, Jordan Tourigny
Team that I felt for the best overall value for their picks: the Seattle Kraken, by a country mile. They absolutely crushed it
I cannot emphasize enough the risk of putting young guys in the NHL when they aren't ready, aren't getting enough minutes, or the situation isn't ideal. Even if they stick around the NHL they might not reach their true ceiling
Let them reach a jog before you ask them to sprint!
I've been following Artem Grushnikov's development for a few years now, and he's always struck me as a guy with an eventual NHL future
There will always, ALWAYS be a need for shutdown D. Guys who can PK, handle tough match-ups and defend late leads. He does that work very well
Dallas 2021 2nd-rounder Artyom Grushnikov doesn't score many points, but man is he good at defending. His ability to close gaps is top-notch (

in white)
I have a strong appreciation for modern shutdown defensemen. It's so much harder to do than it looks, especially in the pros
The Stars are also sometimes able to find out-of-the-box ways to give their prospects an edge
Wyatt Johnston is an incredible success story for their scouting/development system. Would he be THIS good THIS early without living with Joe Pavelski the past two seasons? Probably not
Tij Iginla is a ridiculously well-rounded and complete player
He has a couple of points so far in this ongoing Canadian romp over Sweden, but more impressive, he has been *everywhere* on the ice and is dominant at driving play
He just won't let the Swedes have the puck
@Scott_Gilmore
@bungdan
My girlfriend went through back-to-back related major health scares last year. Weeks in the hospital, countless tests and procedures, months of follow-up appointments, etc. The care she received was excellent, and 99% covered
I'll always, always be thankful for our system
Jamie Benn is not the same player that he used to be. Years of physical hockey and being a top target for opposing defenses has taken its toll on his body
Which is why him fighting through an amazing Vegas team to carry the Stars to a series win was such a helluva thing to watch
What an amazing scouting find Mason Lohrei was for the Bruins. He went undrafted in his first year of eligibility, but Boston was aggressive in taking him in the 2nd round, 58th overall, in 2020
Since then he torched the USHL and NCAA, and already looks to be NHL-ready at 22
Remi Poirer was drafted by the Stars in the 6th round, 185th overall, in 2020
In his first pro season he has a .928 save percentage in the ECHL, a .934 in the AHL, and he just beat up one of the top goalie prospects in the world
Safe to say Dallas likes how this pick is looking
Ty Dellandrea doesn't get talked about as much as other Stars prospects these days because he's grinding it out in the AHL instead of lighting up a junior league, but he's still a guy with really solid NHL upside. He's made big developmental progress this season
How much do the Dallas Stars coaches already trust Ty Dellandrea? Closing out a one-goal lead late against Nashville, here was some of Dellandrea's usage:
* defensive zone faceoff at even strength
* penalty kill
* defensive zone work when the Predators had an extra attacker out
Lian Bichsel (

in white) is a monster on the blueline. He's still a teenager, but watch how he manhandles players in the top Swedish pro league. Goodness
