Pynchon is 87 today. I discovered him in college when I read a Kurt Cobain interview that mentioned him. The first book I read was a library bound version of the edition of GR below. First Pynchon book I owned was the amazing paperback of V. below.
Third book finished this year is The Leopard (1958). Could be a case study on mimetic desire. He worshipped Stendhal, a difficult model, but he succeeds. The long Sicilian half century of social change (1860 to 1910).
34th book of the year is King, Queen, Knave (1928) by Nabokov. His second novel. Took me a while to adjust to its bright, brutish tone, but it’s excellent. Written under the spell of Flaubert and twisting, it preps a catalog of poisons for the traditional novel.
