On September 14, 1918, Judge D. C. Westenhaver sentenced Eugene V. Debs to ten years in prison. Two days earlier, a Cleveland jury found Debs guilty of violating the Espionage Law for delivering an anti-war speech at Canton, Ohio in June of 1918.
