Slowly adding in additional characters who live in Porthwarren: Wait staff, shop owners, cab drivers etc.
Here's the "plucky collie waitress" described in the Wednesday restaurant scene.
The next update is almost good-to-go. Giving other artists some more time, as there have been sicknesses and techinal issues to work around.
Taking a moment to announce that
@big_squid_man
has been making sprites for the next release too!
Progress preview!
Billy's update needed some new costumes & expressions, so it was a good opportunity to revisit his sprites.
This is part of a very gradual plan to give the main group's posing more variety, such as utilising Billy's massive ears to better communicate his mood.
Dawntide Chapter One is now available!
Riley, Sal, Joe, Ranzo & Billy meet together in Porthwarren for the first time in four years. Though with a yearly town festival on the horizon, there may be someone else joining the crew.
As the cast expands, @/Constantinoplos has been helping out by making side-icons for new characters.
I've also been going back and updating the old ones, giving them better framing and a hint of the cast's personalities.
The second chapter of Ranzo's route is written and committed to code, along with new backgrounds by
@JaspersArtVault
and
@otteruw8ing4
Still to go:
- three backgrounds (for all routes)
- extra expression sprites for the main cast
- three fullscreen CGs
- music mixing
"Santa Baby
Slip a sable under the tree, for me"
A pine marten is close enough, I guess.
Happy Hols! When I started this little project last year I was not ready for the reception it would get, so thank you all. Really excited to share some developments in the new year ⭐
As the project planning wraps up and more art, music and coding begins, it feels like a good time to release this.
It'll allow me to put more free time towards the project and compensate additional people helping with the assets.
More info below!
"The ship in this shot is actually a repurposed prop from the cancelled 1978 adaptation of Dark Galaxy. In the HD version you can still see where they painted over the Stellacorp logo."
Dawntide is now available on Android devices!
Additional updates to this build:
- Overhauled UI
- New body-font
- Typo fixes
- Additional context lines
- Added 'auto' function
Itch link in bio
After some time off in September, the project is back in development.
A small update with bug/typo fixes is planned as soon as possible within October.
Next major update planned for early November.
For those who contributed to the 'Engineer' tier and above (including the single-rate tier added later), copies of Chapter Two are being sent out.
Public release on August 26th
Porthwarren is a small town on the southwestern coast of what we would call "the UK". It just about survives as an international trading port, bolstered by summer tourism.
A few local efforts have been made to draw in off-season visitors, such as a festival held in April.
A small update has been added to the Itch page. This features:
- Typo & grammatical fixes
- Removes a piece of looping dialogue that can occur in Chapter One
- Slight UI changes on the android version
Billy's route is still the next major release planned & is underway.
Announcing some changes to the P-tron:
- Reduced to one tier and a tip jar
- Some elements of higher tiers have been incorporated into the lower tier, but the 'Monthly Update' has been removed
If you are an existing patron, please look over the new tier system.
The update for October is now up for patrons of the "Engineer" tier and up.
An exclusive look at new sprites, backgrounds and plans for the month ahead.
Check our bio for the deets!
Interested to know which characters people are most drawn to.
Twitter only allows 4 options in polls & there will be a lot of focus on characters outside this selection too, so leave a comment for anyone else you're looking forward to knowing better.
Due to personal events over recent months, development on Chapter 2 has been slow.
However, things are picking up I've been speaking with other artists to build more of a team.
I plan to make a more official announcement towards the start of October!
Thank you for your responses to the latest update!
Work has started on the next one, but deadliens on something separate means it won't start coming together properly until late February/March.
With a con and another project out of the way, development is getting back underway for the next release.
There should be a smaller update coming son to fix some typos and typographical issues with the mobile version.
When Chapter 2 comes out, one of the things added to Chapter 1 will be more shots of Riley.
The scene in the Chariot is the first full image that's presented of him, so I want to establish who you're playing as earlier on!
All the other sprites will change in their respective updates.Ranzo & Sal will just have some costume alts & shading tweaks for consistency.
Joe will be having an overhaul similar to this: less front-on posing, emphasising a slighter frame & a cigarette when referenced.
The next route planned to release is Billy's. I know there are a lot of Joe fans out there (and I'm personally excited to get that one out too), but Billy's is being prioritised because it features more variety in its scenes, keeping things more interesting for repeat-players.
It's been a tough one to call, but I'm deciding to close the Patreon for reasons listed in the public post below.
All is well, but I no longer feel comfortable charging monthly for the amount of time I'm currently able to commit. ->
There will be a lot of behind-the-scenes work coming up, along with short stories, Q&As & more. There's some posts included, with more lined up throughout October.
I'm really excited to get Chapter 2 out & greatly appreciate any help to speed it along
Implementing new sprites, backgrounds and path splits today. Lots of tiny tweaks and fixes all over, but rewarding to see the pieces we've been working on all start to come together.
A reminder that the current build also features changes to Chapter One. A key location has changed, a few pieces of dialogue are altered to make sense of things coming later down the line, there are new CGs and Riley's inner monologue is presented in a new way.
New VN on the horizon from two very insightful and talented people.
As first-time VN Devs, we shared a lot and did some testing for each-other, which I'm very grateful for. Really looking forward to seeing this develop!
With Chapter One out, time to start working on Chapter Two!
Kidding.
It's been a lot of effort to get to this stage. I'll be taking some time out until I can come with some rest and a fresh perspective. Though I'll keep an eye out for any bugs that need fixing in the meantime.
I am looking into the possibility of a Patreon to allow for more direct time working on the project and to help fund other artists' involvement.
I have some ideas for what to include, but am interested to hear what people would be looking to get for chipping in.
A lot of people have asked and yes, I do plan to release the soundtrack in future.
This will come later down the line (likely as a 'vol.1' midway through the project) when there are more tracks & I can hire someone help with mixing and mastering.
The latest announcement has brought through some new readers so I'll say: The next update will also feature changes to Chapter One:
- Some new sprites & CGs
- Changes to some locations & their names
- Some new pieces of music
I'll be peppering these in with each update. Helps me spread out the workload while making new playthroughs more entertaining for people going back to explore different routes.
General update: Due to workload and the goal of getting a new chapter out by January, I've decided to work on releasing the following chapters on a character-by-character basis. We'll be starting with Ranzo's route, as he was at the top of the patron character poll.
Thanks for bearing-with everyone. Wanted to let people know tht I'll be making changes to the Patreon soon. and running the project in a slightly different way. Just working out the logistics of all this ✌️
I say "new" but it was actually the way initially planned for the first ever test build. I decided to bring it back to make his thought process (and the contradictions of it) more apparent.
Next update will also fix the following:
- Missing emblem on a couple of Ranzo sprites
- Kerning issues and text size of the inner monologue on the mobile versions
- General typos
Revised UI for desktop and Android has been sorted. Working with a new body-text font that's more readable with less spacing issues. Clearing typos this week, then releasing the android-compatible version of Chapter One.
Aiming to keep updates as regular as possible. The next chapter update won't require too many new assets, so the gap isn't likely to be as long as the last one.
Based on patron votes while it was running, Ranzo's Chapter 2 route has been finished first. The others are planned to follow.
Those who pledged to any tier above the Tip Jar will receive this early. Aiming for Monday 21st at the latest once the android build is fully tested.
There was an issue with the android build when uploading earlier today, leading to files being reuploaded. Apologies for any confusion here.
All builds have been tested, but let us know if there are any issues.
If you donated to the project at any point, please get in touch directly so you can receive the next build in advance of the public release. I will be working out a system for one-off payments for anyone who would still like to contribute.
Feel free to play the current built, but be aware that the new release will change some things.
These changes were mostly made to make things flow smoother in later chapters.
Ranzo's second chapter is still the frontrunner to release, but it had to take a back seat while an overlapping character route was written out to ensure consistency.
An issue has been brought up regarding playing save files from the previous build on the current build. This will be fixed as soon as possible. As far we're aware, it doesn't cause issues with new playthroughs started on the current release.
Been told that there are some issues downloading the game on the Itch app.
I'm looking into this at the moment and hope to have it fixed soon.
In the meantime, the game can be downloaded on PC and Mac through a web browser. No additional programs are required.
I've chosen to pause payments on the p-tron this month, as the holiday season has taken up a lot of time and I don't feel comfortable charging for the small amount I'd have to show.
A fixed build has been uploaded to Itch and Dawntide is now running in the desktop app. The issue with the 'back' button not functioning has also been fixed.
If anyone has any more issues with these features after downloading the current build, please let us know.

I'll be doing what I can to get the Ranzo Character Study out to those who chipped in at the First Mate tier.
For transparency: 100% of the P-tron earnings so far have gone to paying new background artists.
Thank you for supporting; expect future art updates to be posted here!
Plans for an update this month:
- Put together UI with Android/small-screen devices in mind
- Fix some reported typos
- Add the 'auto' button*
- Select a new body-text font, as the current one seems to cause spacing issues and is less readable at smaller scale.
A number of people have asked about an android release of Dawntide.
My aim is to make an android version available before the end of July.
Apologies for the wait; I want to make sure the UI for that build is designed with smaller screens in mind.
Because a few people have asked, You do not start the routes locked-in to them and will get a chance to change your mind in Chapter Two. This has made the process of writing/configuring this release quite complex, but I hope it pays off as a more flexible experience.
Ideas so far include:
- More concept art/sketches
- Progress on sprites, backgrounds and music currently being made
- Early drafts/notes of scenes
- Week-early chapter releases
- Short stories set in the world
- Name in credits
- Q&A
- Full game on release
Another reason for this decision is knowing I work better when I share my work; I don't want to keep my sketches and progress locked behind a paywall.
Instead, the new tier now has extras such as:
- contributor credits
- polls/Q&A
- week-early releases of new chapters

Chapter 2 will follow on with whoever the player made plans with in Chapter 1. You'll spend the day with them (with scenes that overlap with other route options) before getting the choice to commit to their route or change your mind to someone else.
Emails are being sent to either the addressed stated directly on request, or to the addresses linked to patron accounts. If you backed in the relevant tiers and don't receive a copy, please send a DM!
