WKRN Meteorologist, AMS CBM & CCM, NWA. Florida State/Tulane grad, Jesuit H.S. '72. I believe in Jesus, but donโt think other religions are necessarily wrong.
My 97-year-old father who has been in hospice the last two years passed away peacefully the night before last. He was a member of the "Greatest Generation", having served on the USS Bunker Hill in the Pacific during WW ll. I got to spend time with him just two weeks ago.
My father in Japan passed away today. This is one of the many trips he sent me and my family on, to Hokkaido in northern Japan. My daughter and wife are feeding the seagulls on a boat trip. So many memories he gave us!
@RepRaskin
Dear Rep. Raskin, I recovered from a similar blood cell cancer, multiple myeloma. The new treatments that exist are making these cancers manageable. I saw a previous reply from a woman who says her father recovered from the same as you have and he is now 97. We are lucky.
I just had some much needed shoulder surgery done on Monday, & will be on the mend for a few weeks. Thanks in advance to โฆ
@Marcus_WX
โฉ and โฆ
@ShelbyMacwx
โฉ for filling in this coming weekend!
What you are seeing on the radar are purple martins leaving their roost in a circle as they go out to look for food during the day. Once again, they have made a roost in downtown Nashville and will be there until late August before they migrate to Central America for the winter.
For those who like to follow the European & GFS models, you have seen them both flip from 5-6โ in Nashville to 0.5โ and back again. You can see why we donโt put our SPECIFIC accumulation forecasts out until roughly 48 hours before. Weโll be taking a stab at it over the weekend!
I am proud to say that I learned today that I have earned the AMS Certified Consulting Meteorologist designation. This is in addition to the AMS Certified Broadcast seal (to the right). I am honored to be part of this exclusive club!
My brother & I managed to get our 95 yr. old father to the Naval Aviation Museum here in Pensacola today. In the picture, he is pointing out where he was when the two kamikazes hit his ship, the USS Bunker Hill during WW2.
Congratulations to our own
@DanielleBreezy
for being recognized as AMS Broadcaster of the Year for her coverage of the March 2-3, 2020 tornado outbreak & efforts to educate the community about severe weather safety.
PRELIMINARY: When you connect the dots, there appears to be 3 tornado tracks from supercells embedded in the line of storms. There could be breaks in these paths. NWS will be doing surveys over the next several days & will determine path lengths/strengths of the storms.
I just learned of my father in law's passing in Japan. This is a flower that he grew in his garden. He loved nature. He sent me and my family on trips all over Japan, even when he wasn't well enough to go with us anymore. We will miss him so much!
I am so happy to say that Krissy Hurley has been promoted to Meteorologist in Charge at the National Weather Service in Nashville. Krissy is not only a great person but the absolute BEST choice for the job!
As we moved our daughter back into her dorm at Vanderbilt (she's an RA), we as parents naturally had concerns about her health & safety. Seeing the statue of Cornelius Vanderbilt with a mask on and the policies in place made us feel a little more secure.
GIBSON COUNTY: This is the fire station in the town of Rutherford in Gibson County from a likely tornado earliker today. Be Weather Alert this afternoon and evening.
The weather never ceases to amaze! Here are two videos of a very weak tornado in Wilson County. This one is COURTESY OF SHAWNA FINN. NWS detected weak rotation on radar. Luckily, these were "low topped" small rain showers and the weak tornadoes did not produce any damage.
This is haunting video of the April 16, 1998 F-5 in Lawrence Co. taken by Bobby Long. You see two houses go up, one at about 20-25 seconds into the video, the second is 1:00-1:05.
My heart is breaking to open my FB page & read about friends who hospitalized battling COVID. My prayers are with you all. This Delta variant is serious. If you havenโt gotten vaccinated, please consider it, & stay safe while waiting for it to develop its full immune response.
While visiting my 95-year-old father in assisted living in Pensacola, I got to watch my old buddy
@cherishlombard
on our sister station WKRG in Mobile. Looking great, Cherish!
My father-in-law when he came to watch Amanda in "Aladdin" in middle school, and my family in Japan. Many memories. May he rest in peace and smile down upon us.
ONE FOR THE AGES! Richard Dawson built this FISHING POLE CHRISTMAS TREE! Notice even the ornaments are bobbers. LOVE IT! Merry Christmas to all the fishermen and fisherwomen out there!
PRELIMINARY STORM SURVEY RESULTS: Clarksville/Montgomery County: EF-3 with 150 mph winds. The same tornado in Logan County, KY: EF-2 with 115 mph winds. Additional details TBD.
The Purple Martins are still here at the southwest corner (river side) of Nissan Stadium. Landing when itโs a little darker. Come down here around 8 pm and see this before they leave soon for South America.
Wilson County Old Rome Pike and Big Springs Rd. Lebanon at 2:40 PM. Check out from about 12 seconds into the video onward. You can definitely see rotation and an updraft. FROM SHERRY METZLER.
DO YOU REMEMBER 26 YEARS AGO? I certainly will never forget that day. There was also Tennessee's only F-5 (before the EF scale) in Lawrence County. Here is a great write-up from our NWS done on the 20th anniversary in 2018:
This is really cool! Gina Rayburn gave our
@MaryJMays
this video of jeeps and trucks from the "Topless in Tennessee Jeep Club" all combining their 4-wheel drive strength to pull a semi-truck up a hill on HWY 48 near Charlotte in Dickson County! WAY TO GO!
My wife, daughter, and mother-in-law are in Japan, went to a hotel near Mt. Fuji and shot a picture of "upside-down Fuji" reflecting off of the lake! Wish I was there with them. They will be back here with me in July!
The NWS has two survey teams going to the hardest-hit areas this morning. One will be focusing on the Madison/Hendersonville/Gallatin area and the other on the Clarksville area. They'll make their way to our other potential tornado paths throughout the week.
Today is
@cherishlombard
โs last day at WKRN. She and I have great memories of hosting
#GMN
Weekend together. She is heading home with hubby Glenn and baby Fox to Mobile to anchor evening news.
Our latest Snow Accumulation Forecast. We are seeing a potential for up to 6" in parts of southern Middle TN. Nashville in the 2" to possibly 3" range, areas to the northwest 1" to maybe 2". Snow starts Sunday night, BUT biggest snow chance will be Monday during the day.
LAST NIGHT CLARKSVILLE, EAST OF I-24: Taken by Fllanza Starmack around 9:27pm near Rossview Rd east of I-24 looking SSE (towards Port Royal). Attained by our
@MaryJMays
. She says NWS confirms funnel cloud, but touchdown not confirmed. We have heard of no damage in that area.
The stupid society we live in, for sure! When it's their house or loved ones suddenly it matters. Otherwise, this is what our society is like. These people should be ashamed of themselves.
Yesterday 2 people died due to flooding. 2 tornadoes caused damage. Unfortunately, I had to cover The Masked Singer to warn people about the dangerous conditions moving in. Here are some comments I received while on air. I will always put lives ahead of a TV show.
I went out of town for a week and returned to this sign of spring. Hello March! There have been many years that I have seen these during a warmer February, but not this year.
The National Hurricane Center's track and intensity forecast of "Milton" would be devastating for parts of central Florida, including the Tampa Bay area. CLICK FOR AUDIO.
Pensacola Beach before the rain pushes in. Visiting the spot where we used to build sandcastles with our daughter when she was little. Brought a tear. Funny, my parents brought my brother & I here, only about 100 yards away. Memories.
I got a chance to watch these guys work and talk with them. I was impressed with the dedication to their craft. They are skilled, fast, and care about you.
From approximately 50,000 outages just after the tornado struck, we are pleased to report that power has been restored to all customers with the exception of some remaining residences and businesses that require more detailed work due to extensive damage.
UPDATED Snow Accumulation Map: Although numbers are lowered a bit for some of us, this is still a significant snow storm. Far eastern areas and the Plateau may get into 1-2" per hour on Sunday, hence the 5-9" plus there. A heavy wet snow that could weight down tree limbs.
In the News 2 Stormtracker Van. I am happy to say that I am not chasing any severe weather, so far. I had enough tracking the Henry County tornado last night!
10:10 PM: I-40 in Mt. Juliet in Providence. The interstate is covered and traffic is slowing. Please stay home if possible. Dangerous wind chills dropping to -20 to -25 overnight. You don't want to be caught out in this.
This is out โRedbud Winterโ. The first of the Tennessee folklore winters based on what trees are blooming. Here is an article I wrote a few years back explaining them all:
Here are 3 of the 5 planets (and the Moon) from this morning's alignment. Venus to the left of the moon, and then Mars and Jupiter to the right. Picture by our own Jerry Barlar.

The NWS Nashville team was able to survey Madison and Hendersonville today, BUT still need to cover Gallatin and other parts of Sumner County. Their preliminary estimates are an EF-2 tornado with 120-125 mph winds.
Matching colors with
@KaylaAndersonTV
and
@WKRNAllieLynch
on News 2 Weekend. I swear we didn't plan this! The only thing that doesn't match is the old grey-haired guy with these two beautiful ladies!
For Meteorologists: Iโm not the smartest guy on the planet, but if you told me an 18Z sounding for Nashville would have dew point 68, 0-3 km SRH 549 m2/s2, Sfc based CAPE 1620 j/kg, I would have expected numerous, & a few strong tornadoes. I guess it was the rain cooled air.
NEWS 2 AT 4PM: I am in the Cookeville area in Putnam County where folks are having to worry about COVID-19 on top of the tornado clean-up & rebuilding.
@MayorBriley
Awesome! If this is the system we in the "meteorology world" have hoped for (and pushed by Bellevue Councilman Dave Rosenberg), this will use the "polygon" warning, meaning only sirens in the warning polygon will sound, and not the whole county.
So proud of our daughter. It might be 2 seconds or 20 seconds, but it is an honor for her to be invited to be part of the Oscars in their first TikTok integration. See:
We will be giving accumulation forecasts when we get 48 hrs out. HOWEVER, here is the percent chance for 3" or more (notice "more") Sat. night-Sun. Areas N & NW could be seeing 6" or more. East Coast forecasters (Bob Ryan) used this technique with nor'easters 3-4 days out.
