It’s not an Emergency Department problem. It’s a hospital problem. As long as every ED is also expected to deliver ward care for 30-60+ patients, on top of ED care for 150-200 new patients every day, this will persist. Step 1. Recognise the actual problem - bed capacity.

So if we admit a patient, get some advanced diagnostics done and reported, a specialty consultation and a multi disciplinary assessment and then manage to discharge the patient safely within 24h, it is somehow inappropriate? No it’s not. It’s efficient!!

Martin, Belgium is out of ICU beds, Northern Ireland is pretty much out of ICU beds, the Netherlands are flying patients to Germany for ICU: the reason for lock down is to avoid this happening to us. Alternatively, we could cancel scheduled non-Covid care?

It was an absolute pleasure to teach on this pilot course for the first group of Critical Care Paramedics. In just 2 short weeks, they have already grasped key critical care concepts in ventilation, vasopressor infusions and much more! The future is very bright! Well done all!

Not really true. Q1 2021 we moved 158 ICU patients inter hospital. So far this week, we have moved 14. This is exceptional demand, unprecedented prior to this year.

Hospitals under pressure. But no more than usual for mid November. Total number of respiratory admissions similar to any year I've worked. Grand total of 2 influenza cases nationally in the last 5 weeks. Covid has displaced influenza as a driver of winter respiratory admissions.
