The Cincinnati Reds would have been serious contenders in the NL Central this year had they added instead of subtracted. The deals look good with the future in mind, but if the owner won't spend when they're close to contending, when (or will) he spend?
The Futures Game is on a streaming service and going head-to-head against high-profile MLB matchups like Red Sox/Yankees. Why baseball's decision-makers want to bury, rather than showcase, its most-promising young prospects is nothing short of a mystery.
Charlie Morton was just asked a question about spin rate in today's World Series media session. Several minutes later he's still going with his answer.
Rob Manfred should hold a press conference and answer any and all questions from the media regarding everything that’s going on in the game right now. He’s the commissioner. It’s his responsibility.
Elly De La Cruz was just ruled out because after a long video review it was determined that he was off the bag by a fraction of an inch for a fraction of a second. Maybe. This is not what instant replay was meant for, and it's not how it should be used. MLB needs to fix this.
From yesterday’s FanGraphs Sunday Notes column:
The Seattle Mariners have hired Dave Cameron as their Senior Director of Player Procurement. FanGraphs’ former managing editor had been consulting for the A.L.West club.
The Detroit Tigers have won 15 of their last 25 games. Since May 1, Casey Mize and Tarik Skull have combined to throw 70 innings with a 2.57 ERA and 83 strikeouts.
MLB’s statement claiming that “the most productive path forward would be the involvement of an impartial third party” is a good argument for having a Commissioner who is an unbiased steward of the game, and not one who represents ownership.
Retiring after 50 years in the game, Dennis Eckersley finishes his last broadcast, then walks down this hallway which is lined by dozens of Boston media members waiting to shake his hand. A touching moment in a day filled with touching moments.
Sandy Koufax threw 2,324.1 innings and had a 131 ERA+. Johan Santana threw 2,025 innings and had a 136 ERA+. One of these pitchers was a first-ballot Hall of Famer, the other got 2.4% of the votes in his only year on the ballot.
Too many negative things are written about baseball -- the people who play it, manage it, even how the game itself is played. Some writers practically make a living out of accentuating negativity. It's unfortunate. Baseball is a joy.
As a matter of transparency, every MLB owner should hold a press conference to explain their personal views on the CBA. It should include taking questions. Hiding behind the scenes and letting a commissioner who ultimately wields no power take the bullets is a form of cowardice.
If you continue to support this guy, you are not my friend. You are welcome to continue following me on social media for my baseball/sports takes (99% of what I share), but do so knowing that I have little or no respect for you.
As a high-ranking front office executive told me off the record some months ago, the best interests of baseball and the best interests of the 30 MLB owners are two different things.
The Cincinnati Reds have scored 200 runs and drawn 200 walks. They’re the only team in baseball with as many walks as runs. The Reds have the most walks in the National League, while their 189 singles are the fewest of any team.
Per the BBWAA:
The average ballot in the 2024 election contained 7.00 names, up from 5.86 last year, with 24.4 percent of the voters using all 10 slots, up from 13.9 a year ago. There were no blank ballots submitted.
Interviewing close to 100 pitchers for my Learning and Developing a Pitch series was probably my proudest accomplishment this year. The number of page views wasn't particularly high, but that's not the point. Providing something of value is.
Alex Cora on the idea of clutch: “There are guys who execute and there are guys who don’t. But as far as clutch, and showing up or not… I’m not a big believer in ‘He’s clutch; he’s not clutch.’ I don’t believe in that.”
The Orioles’ rebuild came up when I was speaking with a veteran player on a different team, and he opined that Mike Elias and Sig Mejdal are geniuses. The player wasn’t being sarcastic.
Mookie Betts’s last three seasons before being dealt to the Dodgers: .299/.389/.535, 85 home runs, 141 OPS+, three Gold Gloves.
Fred Lynn’s last three seasons before being traded to the Angels: .311/.396/.540, 73 home runs, 148 OPS+, three Gold Gloves.
Aroldis Chapman was just named the American League Reliever of the Year. Chapman had 37 saves, 85 strikeouts, a 2.21 ERA, and was worth 2.0 WAR. Meanwhile, Liam Hendriks had 25 saves, 122 strikeouts, a 1.63 ERA, and was worth 3.8 WAR.
For the good of the game, Rob Manfred should step down, and the role of Commissioner be remade into that of an independent arbiter. New bylaws can be written to demand neutrality. The best interests of the game demand such a change. The current configuration doesn’t work.
Joey Votto is in his 11th full season and has a higher career adjusted OPS than Hank Aaron, Joe DiMaggio, and Willie Mays. Think about that for a minute.
In a three-year stretch -- 1974 to 1976 -- the Detroit Tigers drafted Mark Fidrych, Jack Morris, Lance Parrish, Dan Petry, Ozzie Smith, Jason Thompson, Alan Trammell, and Lou Whitaker.
Hottest pitcher in MiLB right now? It might be Texas Rangers 2018 first-rounder Cole Winn. The 21-year-old righty has allowed one hit over 12 scoreless innings in his last two start. In his last four starts he's allowed one run and six hits in 23 innings.
From FanGraphs Sunday Notes:
Javier Báez has 223 plate appearances and is slashing .226/.270/.317 with a 63 wRC+. Luis Arraez has 222 plate appearances and is slashing .390/.441/.485 with a 156 wRC+. Báez has 20 runs scored and 27 RBIs. Arraez has 20 runs scored and 26 RBIs.
Listening to a Detroit Tigers game for the final time this season; concurrent more meaningful contests will take precedence tomorrow. Dan Dickerson continues to be among the game’s best play-by-play broadcasters. Also, Dan Petry should be the primary radio analyst going forward.
MLB can obviously end the lockout at any time and keep negotiating, so if as much as one regular season game is cancelled, the powers-that-be should resign. They will have failed miserably, and the countless millions of fans who love and support the game know it.
In Dave Dombrowski’s last three seasons as Tigers’ GM, Baseball America ranked Detroit’s farm system 27th, 28th, and 30th. Since Dombrowski took over in Boston, the Red Sox system has gone from 4th to 14th to 24th.
In Joe Morgan’s back-to-back MVP seasons (1975-1976) he slashed 324/.456/.541 with a 180 wRC+. He hit 44 home runs, stole 127 bases, walked 246 times, struck out 93 times, and was awarded two Gold Gloves.
Was alerted to an analytics-hating columnist having written that Ted Williams would be sickened by how many players failed to reach 200 hits this season. Not included in the column was mention of how many times Williams reached that number during his career: Zero.
In 86 career appearances, Padres lefty Matt Strahm has a 2.90 ERA and has allowed 82 hits in 118 innings, with 136 strikeouts. The West Fargo, North Dakota native is one of the better pitchers a lot of people outside of San Diego don't know.
Last night, Philadelphia's Ranger Suarez threw 112 pitches while tossing a CG shutout in game that lasted 2;07. Tonight, Boston's threw 94 pitches while tossing a CG shutout in game that lasted 1:49. What decade is this?
Quality bullpen usage by Scott Servais today. Brought in Kendall Graveman - his best reliever - to face Trout, Rendon & Walsh in 8th, then used Rafael Montero in 9th against lesser hitters.
Listening to Tigers game while walking to Fenway and am pleased to hear Alex Avila working as the analyst. He and Dan Dickerson are a plus duo. Would love for this to be a regular thing
Sandy Koufax’s brilliance came in a six-year stretch spanning his age 25-30 seasons. He went 129-47 (.733) with a 156 adjusted ERA. In his age 25-30 seasons, Clayton Kershaw went 92-32 (.742) with a 182 adjusted ERA.
Have begun filling out my HoF ballot, and while decisions remain, three first-time eligibles have checkmarks next to their names: Beltré, Mauer, Utley.
Most under-appreciated postseason pitching performance of all time? In Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS, Derek Lowe allowed one hit, and one run, over six innings... on two days rest.
Eric Hosmer had a five-year stretch where he hit 157 doubles and 94 home runs, had a 115 OPS+, won four Gold Gloves, and was worth 14.4 bWAR. Moreover, he played a big role in a World Series-clinching game. For a player who has often been criticized, he had a good career.
Six Tampa Bay Rays hitters batted over .300 in the World Series. Eight batted under .200. None batted between .200 and .300.
Arozarena, Brosseau, Diaz, Kiermaier, Margot, and Phillips combined to go 28 for 79 (.354). The rest of the team combined to go 14 for 115 ( .122).
Orlando Cepeda had 379 home runs, a 133 adjusted OPS, and 50.2 WAR. Norm Cash had 377 home runs, a 139 adjusted OPS, and 52 WAR. Both were first basemen who played from 1958-1974. Cepeda is in the Hall of Fame. Cash received 1.8% of support his one year on the ballot.
Juan Soto has 144 walks, 29 home runs, a .317 batting average, and a 165 wRC+. In 1951, Ted Williams had 144 walks, 30 home runs, a .318 batting average, and a 166 wRC+. (Judging by wRC+, 1951 was Williams’s 13th best season.)
Seeing people opine that we don't really need to hear from players, in part because most don't have much to say. Strongly disagree. If you ask smart questions, the majority have a lot to share. They know their craft, and many have interesting perspectives, if not good stories.
Cristian Javier over Justus Sheffield as a RoY finalist is interesting.
Javier: 54.1 innings, 3.48 ERA, 4.94 FIP, 0.5 fWAR.
Sheffield: 55.1 innings, 3.58 ERA, 3.17 FIP, 1.6 fWAR.
@mike_petriello
Last year, Albert Pujols was slashing .189/.282/.320 on July 4. That he didn’t walk away, but instead went on to finish the season .270/.345/.550, was truly remarkable. (No, I don’t anticipate Miggy coming close to matching that.)
Bryce Harper and Manny Machado head into free agency having earned a combined $82M. Hank Aaron and Willie Mays combined to play 45 years and earn approximately $4M.
Royce Lewis (155), Matt Wallner (144), and Edouard Julien (136) had the highest wRC+ numbers among MLB rookies with 230 or more plate appearances. All three play for the Minnesota Twins.
Hunter Renfroe was asked if he'd like to see some of this year's new rules, such as a runner on second in extra innings, and seven-inning doubleheaders, carry over to next season. His response: "I want to go back to baseball."
Last year, Nick Castellanos had 37 more total bases than Christian Yelich in 30 fewer plate appearances. Castellanos is three months younger than Yelich.
