There was a horrendous assault on a woman in Dublin last night, she lost her baby, the perpetrator was well known to Gardai but nobody is talking about it as we get excited about restrictions being lifted. There would be an uproar if the story happened in the UK or the US. Why?
I’m sorry but is this what Irish people want? Really? This is something I have always loathed to my very core. As someone from Ulster I was always deeply uncomfortable with this form of nationalism.
Every time I go into the office I am shocked & saddened by the decline of Dublin City. It is filthy dirty. Filthy, heavily littered, it smells bad and anti social behaviour is no longer consigned to pockets, it's everywhere. The new DCC coalition will have a lot of work to do.
With my Twitter turning to a full time Eurovision Account I forgot to tell you all I got married! Decided to take this picture outside the DCC Offices, of all places, just for the craic like.
If this is a NO/NO the blame game will begin but the reality is people are not happy with how the country is being run. They are not happy with NGO/Media telling them what to think & telling them off. They're not happy with opposition or political group think. That's the issue.
People don't go on City breaks to be robbed, assaulted or killed. These incidents get more & more horrendous in Dublin and absolutely no action is taken other than hand wringing and extra Garda for a few weeks up from the country. Our reputation as a City will be in the toilet.
The Shelbourne Hotel will be removing its revolving doors (Revolving doors have been in place at the Hotel since the early 20th Century) due to a series of compensation claims 🙄🙄🙄 - the Government need to get an urgent handle on this pathetic compensation culture.
If Paul Murphy,Hazel Chu&Saoirse McHugh all have the same poorly informed hot take (US style Police brutality & race playing a part in what happened today) you’re probably best advised to assume the opposing viewpoint. In fact, with those three this is almost always good advice.
Imagine being so utterly consumed by culture war conspiracy theories that you actually thought staff at the Beacon were vaccinated because Leo’s partner worked there? 🙄
Sorry to my right wing / centrist Dad friends but the gays in Cork are right to be annoyed. It's all well & good taking the pink euro all year but to kick them out & erase their existence for a week for a crowd of 18 year olds is poor form. The gays should vote with their feet.
@McConnellDaniel
@irishexaminer
Oh my days, is this what you’re passing off for news now? Mortified for this story and the fact you’re seeing fit to publish such nonsense.
Country plunges into Level 5 but woke Twitter decide the issue of the day is our brutal & racist Garda. They often leave themselves open to criticism for the light touch approach so to see them painted as being in line with the American force is beyond immature & frankly thick.
We've gone into Town, Christmas shopping, coffee and a very boozy (drag!) brunch. Why should a thuggish minority element keep us, the majority, that keeps this city vibrant, active and fun at home? We own this city. Go out this weekend and own the city, it's our city.
Absolutely howling. It's a crap summer (yet again) baltic, windy and utterly miserable, even worse than last year but George Covid Lee is scaremongering about heat 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Ireland '20 times more likely' to reach 33C - research via
@RTENews
BREAKING- Tragic office cleaner Urantsetseg Tserendorj, who was stabbed by the IFSC in Dublin 2 weeks ago has sadly died this morning.
(Pic Irish Daily Star)
Have to eye roll at the ferocity of the attacks on Leo Varadkar. He captured exactly how a lot of us have felt for months while managing to be professional & respectful about it but also getting his point across in no uncertain terms. It’s exactly what politics in Ireland needs.
Town is absolutely heaving with Tourists & locals having afternoon pints. The concept & organisation of the Notre Dame Game really is genius marketing & a massive (well needed) boost to Tourism after a rotten summer & recent horrors. Great to see the Policing plan in action too.
Level 5 to save Xmas is the latest BS narrative here. What do people expect? Work do followed by Xmas lunch with the Girls/Guys, 12 Pubs of €9 meals & then rock up hangin’ to Mammy, Daddy & Granny? It ain’t gonna happen. Christmas day with parents is the best we can hope for.
Having a look for Hotels in Dublin for some UK friends. The prices really are an absolute disgrace. Why would you bother visiting Dublin unless you had to? You're paying 5 star prices for a basic 4 star which would have been half the price before Covid. A very poor showing.
The volume of armchair republican nonsense on Irish Twitter this weekend is beyond tiresome. Southern republicans who never spent a day in NI, don’t know a protestant between them, call FG & English tan’s & probably support Man United. This narrative doesn’t play well up North.
I predicted a couple of years ago that we'd see people selling up in central Dublin purely to get away from anti social behaviour & the utter failure to address it. I was right. North inner city residents 'selling their homes' due to anti-social behaviour
The moral of the story for Irish Twitter users is be a half decent person on the platform. If you spend time "hunting" other users, devote hours to "cancelling" people & hounding people you eventually will end up being cancelled yourself. How many times have we now seen this?
Ryanair buying housing for cabin crew and ground staff is a positive story. Great for morale and a good company image boost with staff. Left wing politicians & activists moaning about hard working/underpaid staff getting company housing need to examine their priorities.
This is what Brid Smith TD and the NIMBYs of Crumlin were giving out about last week. “homes not high-rise” would you be able for the absolute horse manure narrative? Looks like homes to me, does NOT look like high rise.
@PaulDonnellySF
Give it a rest Paul, it’s exactly what the country needed. And if you had the best interests of the country at heart, you’d say nothing.
@gardainfo
This is spin. Op Citizen has been inactive for months. I'm sorry, I know you're all doing your best but our eyes don't lie, you're not on the beat, nowhere near European norms.
Going to the office on a Fri is the most depressing day of all if you care about the City. The litter, smells, the pecked apart bags which create more rubbish are even worse after a busy night. That & cleaning being done AFTER morning rush, the opposite of continental Cities.
BBC- back having the craic, hitting the gyms & getting their hair cuts, pivot to RTÉ where they’re talking about fully vaccinated people being impounded in a Hotel in Santry followed by a George Lee soliloquy about “the numbers” & Zero covid authoritarians- the contrast is stark.
Seeing a lot of lockdown hawks on twitter saying a protest of (apparently) 20k people was grand. Are people on glue? It’s a mass gathering folks... the biggest one in many months. And one where social distancing could hardly be maintained in those numbers. Honestly, I give up!
It's hard to describe what a dive College Green is descending into these days. Anti social behaviour & aggressive begging. Tents & associated bio waste. A filthy, cluttered, messy public realm. It is a complete & unnecessary disgrace
@DubCityCouncil
@DublinTown
& needs sorting.
This is what shop staff in Dublin City have to put up with. An over concentration of the entire region's social problems is the number 1 cause, invisible policing the 2nd and a weak justice system the 3rd. Absolutely no accountability the 4th. We need a directly elected Mayor.
I suppose these artists are going to pay Bambie's rent in London and keep them in food and clothes for the year? Because Eurovision will. That's very poor form by Erica-Cody. Very poor indeed.
More than 400 Irish artists and creatives, including Eurosong runner-up Erica-Cody, have signed an open letter calling on Bambie Thug to boycott the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. Read more:
@SorchaPollak
Good intentions but ridiculous to be having something of that scale in the middle of the country being closed down!! incredibly irresponsible.
I wonder what Simon Harris meant when he said Operation Irene meant safer streets? I have been in town all week & I have seen no visible evidence of policing. No foot patrols, no vans, nada. I have seen plenty of drug dealing, aggressive begging & anti social behaviour though.
Ireland needs to re-examine (pun intended) its relationship with the Leaving Cert. I did A Levels & thank god because y’all are traumatised well into your thirties and forties. Something isn’t right & the country losing their collective mind over it annually is most unhealthy.
Have just seen a fella in town picking up cans, looking for the recycle sign and then bagging them in a large bag of empty cans. That makes the scheme a success in my book.
Some thoughts upon my return from Copenhagen! The streets are spotless, well paved, clean, NO wands/bollards.I don't think it should be underestimated what an impact this has to perceptions of a well run City. The City FEELS safe, there is practically no anti social behaviour
Take a look at this and tell me we don’t have a serious problem with delinquent teenage gangs and that our lack of Transport Policing (or visible Policing broadly) is not allowing this societal rot to fester.
Our "progressive" tax system is an example of why Ireland revolted. Keep saying progressive (instead of high ) long enough & maybe you, as a politician, will believe it but middle Ireland will not. We pay HIGH taxes & see a dirty & dangerous city before us. That's not progress.
Isn’t this the same nasty article who lamented about being literally a private citizen after targeting a journalist & private citizen family for months in a far more aggressive manner? Then flounced off Twitter in a strop? Shame he didn’t stay where he was, he’s a dose.
Hate to say it but I haven't seen Gardaí on the beat in the City Centre in a week. In this time I've been in College Green for Sunday Lunch, Georgian Core to the Office, a concert at the Academy, drinks on George's Street. Nothing. Not a single Garda. Are we back to this already?
I've just heard Helen McEntee on the radio say she believes there are enough Gardai on patrol in the city centre. ENOUGH gaslighting! Good lord, just admit to the failure and tell us what you will do to fix it, you'd get a lot more respect if you did.
These horrible stories of random violence in Dublin 1 are so common now it almost feel like it's no longer a big deal. Actor 'bitten and bottle broke over head' after Dublin show - Dublin Live
There you have it, a person well known to Gardai. This is a major issue, a dangerous person living in city centre emergency accommodation. Why? Is it any wonder that Dublin has declined? Parnell Square Attack: Suspect Had Been Arrested Earlier This Year
If the opposition had any sense they'll wake up this morning and realise the public don't like them either. They should have copped that on by the recent opinion polls. Major reflection needed from all of them including Government. Represent your voters, not an NGO bubble.
Pleased to see the Irish Media now focus on the sheer amount of spoofing from SF on housing. Their strategy is clear - worsen & prolong the crisis: Ó Broin opposed social housing project after asking constituents for their views -
College Green is a disaster at the best of times (so much for the public realm "improvements") but
@TescoIrl
I know this isn't your fault but your College Green Store needs to up its cleaning regime. It's your property & looks a complete mess, the worst in the area.
I always said that an American Tourist being attacked is the only thing that will drive any change and action on anti social behaviour but my prediction for this is that they'll ignore it completely. Our Government and Opposition are in cahoots in doing absolutely nothing.
Still seething. Hard to reconcile why we should be the most locked down country in Europe for such a protracted period. Difficult to accept Gyms and pools could not have stayed open but GAA can continue. A tall order to swallow the Save Christmas narrative - a fools errand.
Bizarre waste of money. Where next for social housing?Leinster House? The counter productive efforts of DCC & Dept of housing to ensure that City Centre Dublin has very little housing diversity will never cease to amaze me. Crazy idea for social housing.
Just heard a guy from Alcohol Action Ireland calling for restrictions on alcohol selling for the duration of the emergency? P*SS off! Will the nannystaters ever give over? 😂
Lab, SF, Soc Dems called for an abolition of direct provision & then GP delivered it alongside a promise of own door housing. None had the cop on to think about consequences. Much like the failed referendum there is plenty of blame to go around the entire political establishment.
What’s happening off Mount Street is a national scandal.
200 vulnerable people sleeping in tents without sanitation & at risk of infection & attack.
Conditions are absolutely appalling. This is utterly shameful.
Wrong to blame today’s disturbances solely on our massively overestimated far right when there was a substantial gurrier contingent out in force. The Same trouble makers who mug delivery drivers & stab cleaners & who make life difficult for ordinary Dubliners even in good times.
The redevelopment of the Citi HQ is nice. So in true Dublin style watch DCC reject it as it ruins the "cone of vision blah blah the historic roofline blah blah", ABP to take two years to approve it and then the funding to have evaporated in the meantime. How wonderful.
Unbelievably poor form by DCC. Refuse the outdoor tables that the Bar applied for (and had throughout Covid) with no reason given only to install a Bike rack during their appeal process. Who exactly is sticking up for Businesses in the City Centre?
Saw someone post a picture of their engagement ring with a “he doesn’t support FG so I said yes, obvs” - is this really the first thing you’d think of when you announce your engagement? I find it so odd that you’d invite negative comment & debate to your engagement announcement.
We'll have no Tourists left the way things are going. McEntee and Harris both need to go and a complete overhaul of how the City is planned and policed is required.
Wrong. Most sensible people in Ireland have absolutely no interest in "taking a hit economically" for a folly. The Government has made it's position known. It would be incredibly poor governance for a Gov to deliberately damage the livelihoods of it's citizens for no reason.
So many Extremely Sensible People who say expelling the Israeli ambassador would damage our relationship with America refuse to entertain the idea that maybe it's worth taking a hit economically if it means Ireland isn't complicit in genocide
This man is a legend. However, let us not forget that he and his colleagues have been attacked on our streets for years now. Who was doing it? The lads wrecking the City last night of course. What did our establishment do to protect these foreign workers? Nothing, of course!
Was in Town today for a bit of shopping and the atmosphere was absolutely glorious! Unfortunately, that now means we’re going to wake up to a Karen & Kevin social media storm of “shocking scenes from Dublin City Centre” - how thrilling.
Are people who howled for MHQ now giving out because it’s doing what it was intended to do? Give me strength with this country. It wasn’t only the foreigners that were going to be stuck in the system you know but gas that it was two Irish chancers that have caused this uproar.
Many people in Ireland seem to be gleefully sitting waiting on news of a
#dublinlockdown
like its all a bit of craic. Failing to understand (or care) that the City generates the lions share of Ireland’s wealth & that locking down a City of 1.2m again is ridiculous & unwarranted.
@OCallaghanCian
What is wrong with a company providing housing for their staff? How would young cabin crew be able to get such homes on the market? Fair play to Ryanair.
Disgraceful behaviour by
@tcddublin
. This is everything that's wrong with Dublin. There should be absolutely ZERO objections accepted at this point. As this project has been in planning now for decades, there really is nothing further to discuss.
Trinity College Dublin has objected to the proposed route of the Metrolink, citing the potential disruption to “sensitive” scientific equipment on its campus, such as MRI machines.
@MarxistSaint
Why turn this into a class issue and an us versus them thing? Dublin is unsafe these days, badly managed and badly policed - that is obvious to anyone who has ever left it. Other Cities in Europe are not like this.
Ah lovely. The Dodgy shinner story of the day has emerged in time for my commute. This shows a clear lack of personal responsibility in addition to ridiculous views on the HPV Vax. What kind of people are SF fielding?
Heartbreaking but important to watch from an Irish perspective. Difficult to understand how any Irish person could watch this interview with a distraught Mother, a down to earth Irish lady, and yet still find excuses for the music festival attack.
The Israeli government says Hamas militants have kidnapped more than 100 people, many of them now in Gaza. Children, grandmothers and young people are reportedly among the hostages.
@JamesAALongman
reports from Israel.
This Posh Boy BS sends me under. SF should not feed into divisive classism. MM is not a “Posh Boy” by any stretch of the word. Leo is the son of an immigrant & a nurse. Both men did well for themselves, what is the problem?
