Iโm sitting on the beach in Cape May. My phone rings.I see itโs from Narciso Crook, a former Gallagher player and a flat out great kid. I answer and he tells me he is about to board a plane to Chicago to play for the Cubs. He called to thank me. I canโt stop smiling. He made it!
After a trade from the Mets to the Braves, Braves coach Jimy Williams told me the reason they traded for me. He said โ you were on our field at 2:00 doing early work prior to a 7:00 game. Our staff noticed the effort you put inโ. You never know.
Iโve watched this over and over. I played 8 seasons of minor league ball before 9 in MLB. I used to take walks through neighborhoods in Iowa, Calgary, etcโฆOften wondering if I should be with my family on 4th of July (backyard picnics). You miss so much.
#perserverence
I, for one, criticized NFL refs all season. As a Chiefs fan for 50 years I have a message to Patriot fans. Calls did not decide the game. Brilliant coach planned schemes on both sides of the ball plus a goat at QB with tons of experience flat beat us. No sour grapes here.

BASE COACH POSITIONING: With a runner on 1B, yelling โgoโ on dirt balls or โbackโ on a throw over is for bad base runners. Your command comes AFTER a cognitive read by both you and the runner and is therefore late. Being informative pre pitch is more effective. Please read onโฆ
At age 13, Jimmy was a SS with a size 14 shoe and long fingers. I remember thinking how good the ball came out of his hand. Age 16 he was a pitcher who lacked command. Parents complained that we couldnโt win and advance in tournaments when he pitched. Glad I didnโt listen to them
If you attend a youth baseball game, sit and listen a few innings. Our kids are being robbed of the ability to self correct- an important quality for any player hoping to compete at higher levels. Every pitch is filled with advice from several people simultaneously. Is that fun?
My profound thought for the day:I canโt express enough how much BASEBALL educated me in race relations. Also introduced me to religious and lifestyle differences. Added words like empathy and tolerance to my vocabulary.Much more than 14 years of institutional education did for me!
I recall sliding into Billy Ripken attempting to break up two. Hit him hard across the legs but he still turned it. He helped me up, slapped me on the butt and said โway to play the gameโ. I later played with him and Cal with their dad as a coach. All 3 would have it no other way
If youโre that chapped about a slide, then do something about it rather than wait for umpires/teammates to get between youโฆMcNeil had the opportunity all to himself. Good hard-nosed baseball.
I played on the Mets for two years. I returned to NY as a Brave in 1994. Pregame I heard a Met fan shouting to me. He asked if I could sign a game warn Gallagher jersey. I asked why. He said โ you always took the field like you wanted to be out thereโ. He noticed my hustle!
TRAIN YOUR BRAIN: I once disagreed with a prominent MLB sports psychologist who stated in a seminar โ athletes need to realize theyโre playing a game. Itโs fun!โ I commented โ teach me how to perform when Iโve lost confidence, not how to pretend Iโm having funโ. Please read onโฆ
As a Braves CF in 1994 I listened to Maddox describe a 4 pitch sequence on how he would pitch to Larry Walker. Two cutters in off the plate- let him pull those foul. A 4 seamer in off the plate to back him up. Get him to roll over a change up. He executed it exactly 1st AB!
Every pitch has a purpose. Sometimes he knows what he's going to throw two pitches ahead. I swear, he makes it look like guys are swinging foam bats against him. -John Smoltz on Greg Maddux
ADVANCED HITTER TRAINING: Once you face a FB in the 90s you realize all the gadgets and exaggerated swing loads youโve been taught are ineffective. Your hand speed and shortness of swing simply buys you time in swing decision making. Without it- youโre toast! Please read on...
UMPIRES: The treatment of umpires from some coaches/parents has reached a new level. Most umpires park separately so they can โescapeโ after the game. Many get followed by disgruntled coaches/parents. Itโs time to back pedal a bit before umpires become extinct.
EFFECTIVE COACHING: Accept the fact that you may receive very little credit, or none at all, for the end result of developing a player. The reward is watching what he/she has become , on and off the field!
Dante just gave some pure gold nuggets to those trusting enough to listen closely. Replay it 20 times. Then get in the cage, put in the reps of each approach and learn how to apply these approaches in game pressure. He nailed it!
Dante Bichette was a great MLB player
Member of the 30-30 Club
4x MLB All Star
Dante is currently a Coach in the Blue Jays Organization
Hereโs a look to how he teaches hitting
If you want to be a great hitter, this is something you should watch
This morning Iโll offer some sound advice to parents of any young talented athlete who aspires to one day play baseball for a living. It wonโt cost much. In fact maybe nothing at all. Take them to a spring training complex. Not MLB. Go to the minor league complex. Please read on.
TRAVEL BASEBALL 2005: We all knew the organizations who ran things properly. Knew who the real baseball guys were. Weโd talk prior to games about each otherโs players. Tried to network for the player, not just for our own. Weโd NEVER consider poaching the player from each other!
A very sad day for Gallagher Baseball. We lost a young man in the prime of his life as well as his dad. Zach Attianese and his dad Jude have tragically left us. Hard to come to terms with. My heart is heavy thinking of Zachโs mom , who has lost a husband and a son.
Watching MLB tonight. 4 times I watched teams have a runner on 2nd with no outs. First 3 hitters didnโt get it done. Didnt seem to try. Albert Pujols got it done. Busted his bat to get inside of a fastball inside. Clapped running to 1B. Teammates met him top step. Rare to see now
When I played trying to figure out the opponents signs was simply part of the game. STOP removing every part of the game where an athlete can use his brain.
In light of Brian Flores and minority hiring, a few years ago I was hitting coach for AA Trenton Thunder. The manager was Demarlo Hale. A MLB managing prospect if Iโve ever seen one. Having played for 7 MLB teams Iโm qualified to have an opinion. He earned a shot- never got it.
Can anybody convince me that we are doing right by our youth in baseball? Games are now 90 minutes with a โdrop deadโ time attached. That may be 4 or 5 innings. You may play at 8 AM and could play 3 games if your good enough. No pre game on the field by the way. Whatโs next!!!
At 16 yrs old my future wife and I met. We went to school together. She traveled across the country with me. Some places great to visit, some not so much. Weโve had 5 kids together. Married 40 years!Tomorrow morning, at age 60, weโll have duel colonoscopies. Yeah, weโre old!
As a man who played ball for a living and a dad of 5 kids, if you ask me what Iโd look for in a youth advisor/coach, Iโd say development. Not development of a swing or any phase of the sport. Iโd want development of character. That would serve him/her best in life. No doubt!
ASSISTANT COACH VALUE: My 1st year as a head coach in college I had a young assistant who seemed to have a limited view of his own importance to our cause. He was a catching guy. Happy to throw BP. Players clowned with him. I had no use for that. Please read onโฆ
Free, thatโs a great example of how much the game is played between the ears. The count is huge there. 2-0 allowed me to guess 2 seamer in. If I was behind in count I canโt cover your 2 seamer and your nasty slider. Thanks for showing an AB where I had success! Merry Xmas!
SELFLESS COACH: Willing to sacrifice an abundance of time and energy to develop a player so that , in the long run, somebody else gets credit. If youโre not ok with that reality, get out now. I accepted that early on and was ok with it.
SELFLESS COACH: Puts in time with all players on the roster, not just those with obvious above average talent. My biggest issue coaching pro ball was getting a mandate from one MLB GM to give 100% of my time to 3 โpriority playersโ. Nah, that isnโt gonna work!
As a 12 yr old all star for Nottingham LL, we had mandatory double session practices. My dad had 1 week vacation at LBI Jersey shore. He drove me back and forth daily. Ruined his one effing week. Thank you dad. I lost him at 15 and have missed him ever since!
ASSISTANT COACH: Lastly, when you make your assistants part of the decision making process as far as making a roster or game day lineups, players are aware and tend to give more respect to the coach. They do less clowning. Practice efforts rise. Theyโre under constant scrutiny.
When you hear an X MLB player vent frustration towards the many changes in the game today, trust itโs not coming from personal gain. Itโs an awareness of the sacrifices of all those who came before us. An obligation to those who come after us. We respect the game.
NONTRADITIONAL COACHING: Try grouping like- minded hitters together in BP. Speed guys who can bunt for a hit, power hitters, contact guys. Their daily work will be similar. They will feed off each other. Itโs a beautiful thing to watch. Please read on...
In all of my years in baseball, Iโve never seen the collective pitching talent appearing in one game than last night. One after the other both teams ran out one guy after the other with โelectric โ stuff. In the loss Eovaldi SAVED the Sox staff for the remainder of the series.
MENTAL STRENGTH: 1 yr after batting .222 in AA Chattanooga, TN, I was sent back to repeat the level the following year. I hit .338 to win the batting title. I did not seek out a hitting guru or make drastic swing changes. It was more pre pitch approach-every pitch! Please read on
HITTING COACH APPLICATION: A 15 yr old player may typically visit a hitting trainer on a Monday, his Rec coach on Monday night, travel coach at Tuesdayโs practice, HS coach on Wednesday and hear his dads advice on car drive to a weekend travel tourney. Sound confusing? Or fun?
Many people watching this hit by Segura will call it cheap or lucky. I see it much different. Rewatch it and look at his head position and bottom hand thru contact. In a different mindset pre pitch he could have easily swung over top of it or rolled the bottom hand.

In the midst of moving I found this note I wrote to my wife in 1984 after we had our first of 5 kids-Shannon. I was in the minors(AAA Maine). Now Iโm married for 40 years with two grandkids from Shannon. Wow! The side nobody sees of minor league baseball.
My first season in MLB I needed 1 hit in my last game to hit over .300. I singled off Saberhagen in my third AB. Aggressive turn around first, so excited. Coming back to the bag I stepped on George Brettโs foot. He jumps back, I nervously apologize, and he says โnice job kidโ!
PARENTAL ATHLETIC HINDRANCE: Changing teams, transferring schools, playing multiple teams simultaneously, all threaten the existence of some top qualities in our young athletes today. Loyalty, commitment, resolve, work ethic, all currently face extinction.
THE SWING: If u knew every pitch was an inner third FB youโd teach a more rotational swing. If every pitch was a 2 seamer or change away youโd teach a more linear swing. U can say the same about up and down in the zone. There are no great swings- there are great hitters!
PERSERVERENCE: My first pro game in the NY Penn league(rookie ball), I batted 7th in the order. Didnโt sit well with me. I didnโt call my agent or bitch to teammates. I went 2-4 and one of my outs was a seed to SS. Next day I batted 3rd. You want to bat higher in the order? HIT!
I was on that team until August. I still have two seats from the ballpark. One of them is numbered 17, my uniform number. Hit my 1st MLB HR there. A 11th inning walk off winner vs Toronto. Hit upper deck facade off Mark Eichorn.
Wow! The final game at Comiskey Park. September 30, 1990. Sox won 2-1. They had quite a team that year (Fisk, Ventura, Guillen, Kittle, Thomas, McDowell, Thigpen) finishing with 93 wins! Photo: Frederick Nachman
About as well as it can be said! Those with โwisdomโ are almost extinct at the highest level and working its way down throughout all of baseball. The system is broken!
ASSISTANT COACH: Prior to our season opener, I had a short meeting with my young assistant coach. He was a catcher as an active player. I asked him โ who do you want starting behind the plate todayโ? His face changed. It was a conference game. Please read onโฆ
My guess is this is directly tied to a 180 degree pendulum swing from instituting new hires of non baseball experienced saber metric gurus while methodically removing men with decades of gut knowledge and feel for the game. The result is proof in the pudding!
STARTERS VS NON STARTERS: Do not root against your own teammates for your own benefit. Negativity, inwardly or outwardly, begets more negativity. Misery loves company. Your best shot at getting on the field is focusing on your game, not failure of others.
WILL NOT MISS: A parent contacting the coach to discuss batting order, game strategy, playing time, etc... Then ending the conversation with โ youโre not going to tell my son about this call, are youโ? I ABSOLUTELY AM.
Without naming any individuals, organizations or tournament companies, inflating the velocity of a pitcher by a couple MPHs is not helping the athlete. In fact Iโd say it hurts him. Eventually he has to repeat it in view of a recruiter and canโt. Itโs all to common today.
Guys whoโve spent their entire adult lives as a successful player and GM at the highest level having a relevant discussion about the state of amateur baseball. Nah, why listen to them? Pick somebody barking on social media selling you down the river.
#sarcasm
I think this is a great segment for all kids, trainers and parents to listen too. Hit the ball consistently, don't look for the home runs all the time. Put the ball in play more than striking out.
1994 LOCKOUT MEMORIES: Iโm home in NJ during the lockout. I answer a knock at my door. Itโs a guy who had several beers. Heโs on me hard about the work stoppage. Never met the guy before. I grabbed a beer and sat on my porch explaining my view. We shook hands and he left happy!
Itโs a scary proposition when those who have not played the game are not only the caretakers but also the majority influence on how the game will look in the future. Guys like Mattingly and Bowa donโt need the game at this point. The game as I once knew it NEEDS THEM!
Spoken like someone who was got 2000+ big league hits himself. Take note players...baseball is more than just exit velocity...it's about IN GAME PRODUCTION!
ASSISTANT COACHES: Imagine being a coach attending a coach meeting with zero personal input into results or team direction. Just being told what to do. Is that a job you would want? Not me. The staff should be part of the team. Feel similar emotions in wins and losses. Read onโฆ
TRAVEL BASEBALL 2005: Call from Mike Garlotti (Rockies full time scout) or John Wilson (Twins full time scout). โDave, you want to play a DH Thursday night? I got a field. We can split ump fees.โ. For $120 we played two 7 inn games, no time limit. We also took pre game I/O.
COACH NUGGETS: If a pitcher asks for a new ball after throwing a fastball for a strike, youโre getting an off speed pitch. Most likely he didnโt like the seams. Good time to wait back as a hitter. Good time to steal for a runner.
My son Evan and daughter-in-law Carol just had a baby girl. Her name is Nora and she is my third grandchild. Baby and mother are healthy. AND THE BRUINS JUST WENT UP 2 GAMES TO 1 ! Life is good!
VALUE OF BUNTING: This under rated skill offers so much to a ball player. My rookie year I had 15 bunt hits. Never approached that number again once opposing 3B crept in. Then my inf hits to deep SS increased significantly. Playing in limits the lateral range of the 3B. Read onโฆ
BRUSHBACKS : As a MLB rookie I asked veteran Tiger pitcher Frank Tananna to move the resin bag from the side of the mound to the back. BIG ROOKIE MISTAKE! He drilled me in my ribs first pitch- and I was leading off the bottom of the first! Hard lesson learned. Please read onโฆ
ASSISTANT COACH: Giving my assistant coach, who worked with our catchers, the responsibility to name the starter made him work harder and pay attention more. I let the catchers (4 on roster) know he would have that input to the lineup. The clowning stopped. Please read onโฆ
ASSISTANT COACH: I learned that by trusting and giving my assistant coaches real responsibility it actually made me better. It narrowed my focus. I could put more time into hitting and defense. Our coach meetings became more relevant as we needed each others input. Read onโฆ
This morning Iโll use my next several tweets to discuss the importance of head coaches giving responsibility to assistant coaches. Not just throwing BP or hitting fungos. Real responsibility. It can change the culture of your team. Please read onโฆ
So this card has a story. While on the Mets, Dallas Green wanted to rest Eddie Murray a few games vs the Pirates. We were facing 3 LHP and Dallas asked me if Iโd ever played 1B. I fibbed and said yes. I took ground balls during pre game BP and started at 1B that night. Read onโฆ
HITTING COACH vs SWING COACH: Once youโve learned YOUR swing basics and are playing on advanced levels, the level and knowledge of the coach should progress with you. Conversations about approach become more relevant than swing reps. Cont...
Iโm putting it out there again to MLB owners. There is a man worthy of consideration as a manager. Not a token interview. I watched him manage young men first hand for AA Trenton Thunder. Players respect him. Played hard from him. He has earned his shot. DEMARLO HALE
I canโt disagree. Too much history to forget about. The reality for a Chiefs fan, and I am one, is the feeling of we can beat any NFL team. The flip side is we realize many NFL teams can beat us on any given day. How many fans of NFL teams can say EVERY game has been exciting?
This man has no idea what he has meant to my life. As a young boy my dad told me countless stories of a player he saw at the Polo grounds. I wanted to be him. As I grew up I saw him play and became a Giants fan. When I reached MLB the impossible happenedโฆ.
RELEVANCE OF TAKING PITCHES: I had a front row seat on 7 MLB teams. I paid attention to so many of the games best hitters. Yes their swings were amazing but it was their โtakesโ that stood out to me. I felt I had more bad takes in a week than Bonds had in a year! Read on...
ASSISTANT COACH: I let my pitching coach know he would name the starters and make appropriate pitching changes. Why wouldnโt he. He spent so much time with them throwing sides and knew each one better than anybody on the planet. Please read onโฆ
After retirement from baseball u may be surprised at what I miss. Not friends. Not wins. Not locker room banter. Not signing autographs. Itโs the constant, sometimes grueling daily decision of answering failure with hard, extra work with no guarantee of change. I miss that!
My Met baseball card with the twin towers as a backdrop. Itโs the only one I own and it has become one that I look at more than any card I own. Especially on this day. So many lives. So many families affected.
SWING COACH VS HITTING COACH: My point regarding my previous tweets- all the instruction, contraptions, swing reps and time u spend on your perfect swing in the cage will not translate if you donโt study the weapons the guy on the mound has and how u can combat them! Good luck!
This tweet ignited so much in me. I spent 8 yrs in the minors. Constantly ignored the assessments of farm directors and GMs. Had to. Kept working and believing. In the end they were wrong. I made it. You just canโt measure the fight and drive in somebody.
@J_WalkerBB
@JeffPassan
The answer and reality is non of these players were prospects. They were all filler players so prospects had teams to play on. Just hit reality quicker than expected. No top prospects have been released
MY PATH TO MLB: Never ranked by any organization or had social media driven amateur organizations try to decide whether or not I was good enough to be evaluated by those who matter.
So if youโre watching the Mets/Pirates game, benches just emptied when Josh Harrison broke up two by sliding hard straight into the bag. You heard me right. Benches emptied. People- weโve lost our game . Itโs hard to recognize now.
TRAVEL BASEBALL 2005: In order to be on an established travel organization as a HS player, you had to , at a minimum, have some success on the varsity level. Today, players with zero varsity experience are ranked and invited to โinvitation onlyโ showcase events. (Mass mailings)
Just watching MLB Network piece on the career of Randy Johnson. He was my final MLB at bat. I pinch hit for Garrett Anderson (Angels) in a one game playoff. Winner faces Yankees. Loser goes home. I hit a 1-0 FB hard to right center gap. Jay Buhner ran it down. My last swingโฆ
To the entire baseball community! To rival teams/academies. To umpires at all levels. To parents- even those who are impossible to please. To coaches/mentors at all levels. To all of us who have chosen this wonderful game of baseball as a part of our lives-HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
DETRIMENTAL NEGATIVE THOUGHTS: At the AA level I realized legitimately pulling for my own teammates, OFs included, freed up my brain. Call it karma if you want but I actually felt better about who I was as a teammate. My play improved quickly. Please read on...
BEHAVIOR COUNTS: Please drop โmy badโ from your vocabulary! First, we all know it was your bad. Second, itโs ok, we all experience failure too. In my view, if you are a strong effort guy youโll never have to apologize for a mistake. Itโs a given you feel terrible.
YANKEES/RED SOX RELAY PLAY: Looking closely at that game swaying play youโll see Boegarts glance back at his trailer and shout โlet me know if he sends himโ. That allowed him to turn and fire a strike without hesitation. The trailer is the eyes of the play.
#yankeesvsredsox
TRAVEL BASEBALL 2005: Average cost of tournaments was about $400. Events out of state were about a grand. The cost of todayโs tournaments has tripled in 15 years. Recruiting events have also skyrocketed. More and more families are being financially leveraged out.
I won the Eastern League batting title (.338) with this stadium as my home field. (AA CLEVELAND). It had a short RF wall which helped me learn how to truly โwaitโ on a pitch. Difference maker in my career. Also present for most of the filming of THE NATURAL. That was 1983.
TRAVEL BASEBALL: Since coaches knew and respected each other, weโd talk about players and network for them. Can you imagine? We actually helped kids from each otherโs team. It truly was about the kids being the priority. Mike Garlotti helped my son n his college choice! Read on..
Recently I met with a player regarding his disagreement of roster placement. As always I assessed him truthfully. It wasnโt what he wanted to hear but he handled it brilliantly. Well prepared. Didnโt put down other players.Asked what his weaknesses were. Breath of fresh air!
Dave LaPoint is one of the funniest teammates I ever played with. Once offered me 30K for my T-206 cards without seeing them. I was smart to say no. I was given over 200 cards in a shoebox for helping a neighbor woman in her 90s. Iโd shovel snow and rake for her.
Funny how hitting/pitching coaches are quick to mention the star players they worked with but never mention the many they coached who fell short of their goals. Iโve lost count of how many people/organizations โdevelopedโ Mike Trout.
#putyourstamponhim
Regardless of which side of the aisle you fall politically, can we all agree that watching CNN and FOX are both grossly biased toward their obvious party? Every minute detail of behavior and action is picked apart in ten different ways. Itโs all shamelessly political!
In 10th grade I handed in an assignment in English/Literature class (Miss Sokul), which asked for 3 major things I wanted to accomplish in my life.
1) Play MLB
2) Earn a million $
3) Marry the girl sitting in front of me in class
I accomplished all 3! Shouldโve raised the $ !
I was nervous having never played there my entire life. At one point the Pirates had the bases juiced and I turned to Pirates 1B coach Tommy Sands. โ Tommy, where do I go on a double down the right field lineโ? He laughed and reminded me I was in the other team.๐
During the filming of THE NATURAL in Buffalo, Morgan Fairchild was dating a crew member. We didnโt care. Just wanted a picture with her. Kelly Gruber, myself, Robin Fuson and Jay Baller.๐
