In just one week:
- An LGBTQ bar in Brooklyn was set on fire by arson & destroyed
- The CDC released a survey saying that nearly half of LGBTQ kids have considered harming themselves
-Bill 616 (a version of FL's DSG Bill) was introduced in Ohio
-SC passed anti-trans sports bill
If you want to know why we keep needing and pushing for more LGBTQ characters in tv and film, it's because people are less likely to hate us, want to hurt us, kill us, if they can see us and understand us. It's about more than seeing ourselves. It's about saving ourselves.
I’m seeing a regression of queer content where fans have to essentially create their own continuations like we did when fanfic was all we had. Fans shouldn’t have to fight for every piece of media they love.
I think Bury Your Gays has a lot to do with timing. If queer happiness is fleeting, if death feels like a punishment for that happiness, that walks a dangerous line. I think my frustration with
#KillingEve
is that a. the source material gives them a happy ending b. The timing
Today I’m happy to officially report that because of your combined voices, passion and amazing efforts -
#WarriorNun
will return and is going to be more EPIC than you could imagine. More details to come! SOON! Thank-you!!

At some point, fans are going to stop tuning in, period. Why become investing in something that will not only not be renewed but will be removed completely without warning. It's callous and cruel to creators, actors, crews and fans alike.
Paramount+ has canceled — and is removing! — Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Star Trek: Prodigy, The Game and Queen of the Universe from its service as it becomes the latest streamer to take advantage of tax write-offs
If the timeline of a queer character finally finding happiness then meeting a violent end is shorter than the time it takes to microwave a Hot Pocket, it’s probably gonna be an issue.
Dear
#WarriorNun
fans, could you direct me to some accounts that are doing a lot of organizing, planning, etc for saving the show? I'm working on a piece!
“A lot of these shows were well-intended but talk to a very small audience on a very big budget.” This quote kills me because we all know what it really means.
Netflix’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos says they have “never canceled a successful show.”

You guys, the number of people who think homosexuality is a new thing is blowing my mind. You can't fathom lesbians in baseball? Wait until I tell you about ancient Rome.
Naya Rivera gave so many of us a gift that words cannot express. She will always be there, singing her way through our hearts. Remember that strength.

I feel like I post this at least once a year: queerbaiting is not when a ship’s storyline doesn’t turn out the way we want it. Queerbaiting is dangling the possibility of a ship to tantalize and attract a fanbase, with no intention of putting them together.
- Arizona outlawed gender-affirming health care for trans youth AND passed anti-trans sports bill
- Alabama is trying to push forth a bathroom bill
This isn't even all of it.

Remember webseries and how they were so queer and awesome and we loved them and then they became prohibitively expensive to make and all but disappeared?
Very bummed about The Wilds. I’m not entirely surprised however. Fan reaction to the change in format was clear from the get go. Fans fell in love with the core characters in S1 just to have that format change significantly in S2.
Yes,
#ALeagueOfTheirOwn
is very gay. Very. It also has some of the best depictions of platonic love between women I’ve seen. Max and Clance. Jo and Greta. Lupe and Jess. The series has so much heart.
I can’t predict the future but based on 10 years as a critic covering media, I would strongly bet that
#FirstKill
will be renewed for at least another season if not more. I would also expect to see a bump in budget for the show.
I cannot even believe
#FirstKill
isn’t getting another season. It makes zero sense from a budgetary and viewership perspective. Also, those optics are TERRIBLE. I’m gobsmacked.
I’ve gotten a lot of messages from Naya’s fans saying that they aren’t sure they feel the right to feel the way they do. You absolutely have the right. You can feel anyway about her passing that you need to. There is no monopoly on grief.
It’s pretty clear that Rebel Wilson was forced to come out, likely earlier than she wanted to. This sort of outing used to happen a lot in the 80s and early 90s. It was atrocious then, and atrocious now.
Whether you realize it or not, Carmilla's popularity opened doors for many other queer genre projects. It also proved that queer women were a demo that could and should be marketed to (re: Kotex) Its impact cannot be overstated.
.
@Netflix
will soon release series and movies that allow viewers to “choose the next storyline.” The concept will first be tested in an episode of the upcoming fifth season of
#BlackMirror
, expected to drop in December. (via

It's Mental Health Awareness Month, and I just want to say a few things. It's ok to need help. It's ok to ask for help. It's ok to not be ok. It's ok to be on meds. It's ok to choose to not be on meds. Your life is precious and you are loved by people you haven't even met.
We just don’t count on queer representation in media for our own satisfaction. We need it to help people who aren’t us, really see us. TV and film representation directly correlates with less anti-LGBTQ sentiment in the real world.
People have a lot of feeeelings about Happiest Season, but this much I can say for sure: the studio and Hulu put a lot of money behind promoting this film which gives me hope for future queer-centric films.
Also, if you court a queer audience, and know you have a dedicated queer audience, and you give them death as a payoff, it begs the question - did you value your audience?
Very proud of Kat for being open and vulnerable in this interview. Someone who gives so much of themselves to their fans deserves great respect, as does her sexuality and relationship.
I couldn’t be more proud of
@baumanelise
&
@natvanlis
. They are two of the most smart, funny, and talented people I know. They are game-changers, creatives, activists, and A+ humans.
The term queerbaiting has come up a few times over the past few days and I think it's important that we clarify what queerbaiting really is (and what it isn't)
We can’t be in a place where queer characters can never die, but there is a lot of nuance to BYG that should be considered by creators. Bly Manor was successful at having a queer character die without falling into this trope.
Dear Hallmark,
Is the loss of some of your viewers more important than the erasure of an entire group of people?

I can’t believe it’s 2019 and we are fighting to save two of the most beloved queer representing shows. I mean, ok, I can believe but I’m exhausted about it.
The time between Villanelle and Eve hugging to celebrate that their mission was over and V's assassination was 30 seconds, or 1/4 the cooking time of one Hot Pocket.
I’ve gotten your tweets and emails about
#Station19
and frankly I was shocked to see it cancelled. Marina fans are understandably upset. Solid ratings, passionate fanbase. I hope more info on the decision will come out.
This morning I was thinking about all the lesbian and queer women who played in silence and fear for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. How it would be /is for them to see people like themselves cheering them on, even in fiction.
I agree. Between avoiding possible anti-LGBTQ+ backlash and the insane state of streaming, I would anticipate a really tough 2024-2025 for queer content.
This was a true collaboration w/ members of queer fandoms and I am honored that they were willing to share their stories with me. Queer fans are fighting against "Cancel Your Gays" and u should listen to them.
