We are cautioned, “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil” (Isaiah 5:20). An equally worrisome couplet for our time would be, “Woe unto them that make complex that which is simple.” The things of Christ are straightforward, requiring small, simple actions on our part.

As we combat COVID-19, I've thought about what we can do to avoid spiritual “illness.” Often, we are told that what makes a difference is daily prayer, daily scripture study, daily repentance, and conscientiously preparing for worthily partaking of the sacrament (among others).

The phrase “looking beyond the mark” (Jacob 4:14) means to incorrectly look past the Savior of the world and not recognize His power to save. We need to guard against this tendency lest we miss Jesus Christ in our lives and fail to recognize the many blessings He offers us.
