Verlander had a virtually identical season as Cole and added a No Hitter. Less strikeouts but also lower WHIP. Playoffs aren't a factor. But still Cole should've gotten it, was clearly the most dominant pitcher in baseball.

There is some merit to this point. During the Steroid era we saw a lot of HRs that were nonsense. Not hit really well and out of parks that generally nothing got out of. Now that's a nightly occurrence.
