I tell my students not to use more words than are needed. "Is able to" is 3 words. "Does" is more direct. Why say "in the event that" when what you mean is "if." And how often do you hear "an added bonus?" It's redundant. A bonus is an addition. Here's to more efficient speech.

It was great to hear "Syracuse" in the same sentence as "greatest" when Jim Brown was introduced as the best college FB player ever. Hard to believe he didn't win the Heisman. No African American did until 1961: Ernie Davis who also ran for Syracuse.

I was honored tonight to present my dear friend John Nicholson for the WAER Radio Hall of Fame. He got his start on the air as a senior at Syracuse and went on to a career as a consummate news and sports broadcaster. Bravo John! You are a Hall of Famer.

Chris Fowler describes action with expressive verbs. "He barrels into the end zone." "He dances out of bounds." "He slams him to the ground." That's how to do PxP right! Use verbs, not "is able to" when describing action. #CFBPlayoff #ESPN

Notice how AL Michael's uses players' first & last names on most occasions. Jerome Ford isn't a nationally known athlete, so Al calls him "Jerome Ford'" not just "Ford." That shows respect for the audience & the player. Young sportscasters take note. @NewhouseSports @SUSportMgmt

I met Jayson Stark the 1st day of freshman year at SU. His ready smile, infectious laugh & quick wit made all of us on Brewster3 glad he was one of us. Now he joins the Writers' Wing of the Hall of Fame, immortalized for doing what he loves & sharing it with us. Bravo Jayson!

25 years ago today we televised the 1st match in Major League Soccer history on ESPN. I was proud to work with MLS founders & lead our production team. I still remember the joy we all felt at the birth of this now thriving league. Kudos to all who have made it successful. #MLS25

CFP Championship on ESPN: in opening segment, notice how when Kirk Herbstreit was speaking, Chris Fowler kept his eyes on him and didn't glance at the camera. In real life, when someone is talking, the natural & polite thing to do is watch them talk. A good lesson. #CFBPlayoff

I was sad to hear today that longtime Syracuse news anchor Rod Wood passed away. In my 1st job as a news producer Rod was my anchor at Ch9. He would pester me for my rundown early so he could start writing. If he had to wait he'd crack us up doing impressions. We miss you Rod.

Syracuse players & coaches are wearing ♥K patches and pins to honor Kelly Seubert. She was Coach Boeheim's lead admin assistant and right hand for 13 years. Kelly passed away last summer after battling cancer. She was 53. #MarchMadness

Saddened by the news of Don Shula's passing. When I was at Ch7 Miami, we hosted the weekly "Don Shula Show," so I got to see him regularly. He always had a smile & an encouraging word. We have lost a special man whose achievements & acts of kindness will long be remembered.

In tonight's late local news, NBC Connecticut announced that "alcohol sales are up 55%." But they didn't say over when: last month, over the same period last year, above the March average? It's sadly a very common oversight: giving statistics without making a connection to time.

My family & I had dinner with Tiger Woods and his father in 1993 at the Dial Awards in Washington DC. My sons were about the age of Tiger's kids now. As a parent, Tiger's victory hugs with his son & daughter made for an emotional moment here. #TheMasters
