#Gaemi now has few 170+ kt bins at NW quadrant on Ishigaki radar. 4-bin average is ~165 kt, which results in 140-145 kt surface wind. Reflectivity x-section (h/t @weather_models ) shows obvious stadium effect, which is a sign of intense TCs.

More on the huge MCC over Southeast Asia earlier today. The (relatively) reliable reading of min. cloud top temperature is around -104 degC (excluding noises from scan lines). The size of overshooting top is also very impressive.

Bedout island enters Cyclone #Ilsa 's eye. The minimum pressure so far is 931.7 mb. The max sustained wind is 113 kt and max gust is 150 kt. Given that the eyewall sampled is not the strongest and Ilsa is slightly after peak, this could support a Cat 5 intensity at the peak.

On October 12, 2019, Typhoon Hagibis spawned a JEF2 tornado in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture. This tornado was observed by a X-band phased array weather radar at very close range. Very impressive radar presentation.

This mysterious tornado occurred in July 2017 could have the longest track ever recorded in China. The tornado scar extended at least 30 miles. The tree damage swath also reached 1.5 km.

#Gaemi continues to intensify according to radar despite lackluster IR appearance. JMA didn't dealias correctly so I processed the data again. The corrected velocity shows some 160kt pixels at E quadrant at 2300 m, which yields ~140kt surface wind.

The HKO recon today did penetrate the core of typhoon #Yagi . The eyewall dropsonde reported 931.5 hPa surface pressure at 04Z. At this time Yagi weakened slightly due to EWRC. (Corrected wind speed unit from previous tweet)

Plotted a HRPT scan of typhoon Paka. Due to the lack of US receiving stations, NOAA CLASS doesn't have HRPT data in the middle of pacific. (Sat keeps HRPT data for only a short period.) Fortunately Chiba University has its own receiving station nearby and saved the valuable data.

Just tried the AI-VIS model trained by @Carl225126302 . The generated nighttime visible images look pretty realistic and have sufficient details. Now we can enjoy visible images even after sunset, very impressive work.

Typhoon Marge'73 was an ignored monster. It maintained a small but compact structure till landfall. Qionghai station reported 937.8mb outside the eyewall at 2040Z. CMA got central pres of 917-937mb by extrapolating several pressure traces and picked 925mb in the best track. (1/2)

Typhoon Mujigae (2015) had one of the most impressive radar signatures among typhoons that have made landfall in China. People were able to see blue sky in its eye.

Did a quick regression of pressure series recorded by this buoy using radar-derived RMW and got ~899 hPa central pressure. This curve also (surprisingly) has good agreement with the pressure obs from Yonagunijima.

At 00Z today, drifting buoy "5201802" recorded an MSLP of 949 mb at a distance of ~28km west of Typhoon #Gaemi 's eye. This supports a central pressure of ≤920 mb based on Schloemer equation. Good support for supertyphoon intensity especially when combined with radar velocities!
