As senior leaders we have to be brutally honest with our Soldiers about our past. That starts by telling our stories. We were them once, we just didn’t talk about it. Times have changed, it’s ok to get help.There’s nothing shameful about it. One death by suicide is one to many!

SW Baghdad 05 I flew a Soldier to BIAP to get new glasses. One thing I told him was get a hot meal.He was turned away at the chow hall because his uniform was dirty and he needed a haircut. It still infuriates me to this day. Comparing haircuts and success in combat is ridiculous

Here’s a little tip. Soldiers don’t care what your ACFT/APFT score is, they don’t care what DEGREE you’re on, they don’t care what schools you’re been to...they just want to see you!!! Presence! Be present, be positive, be gone! We owe it to them!

I once had a BN CDR who on the 1ST day of CMD tell the BN “If it’s not on the training schedule, I want everyone home at 1700!” He’d walk through COF’s looking for Soldiers/LDR’s still working. He held CDR’s accountable, a man of his word. I’ll never forget that. Deeds not Words!

A SR leader told me “people don’t commit heart disease, they die of heart disease.” “People don’t commit suicide, they die of suicide.”It’s our #1 killer of Soldiers. All the combat I’ve seen this hurts the most. I wish I could help everyone. Please talk to someone, please dm me.

I never realized how many unknown Soldiers were buried in Arlington. Lea & I walked down to visit some friends in section 60 this morning. Celebrate them, their sacrifice, but most of all…remember the good times! Like my friends, I’m pretty sure that’s what they’d want also! 🍻

If you retire & continue serving our Soldiers as a DAC, here’s some advice. If a leader calls with a problem & asks for help, you may ask “why?” If they tell you “because it’s taking care of the Soldier & it’s the right thing to do” the only answer we should hear is “Yes!”

My daughter has gone to 3 high schools (states) in 4 years. Last year all virtual. Today she entered the school she graduated from for the 1st time to receive her diploma. She’s so resilient & I’m so proud of her. No prom, no graduation but she understands. All of us suffered.

I spent some time with the Chief one night in 2018. I was able to ask him some questions about Iraq that had bothered me for years. He was honest & answered every question. He helped me close a chapter that needed to be closed. I will always remember. Thanks Sir, RIP!

I gave a young PFC a coin today. The look on his face was priceless. It meant so much to him. Reminded me when received a coin from MG(R)David L Grange in Kosovo 1999. It meant so much to me & still does. It’s the little things that mean so much to our Soldiers. To know we care.

When I got to USARAK, I met a Soldier on extra duty picking weeds. I proudly told her I was also a member of the “45 Day Club.” She’s a SGT now & I’m so proud of her! She gave me this & it meant the world to me. It’s the little things that Soldiers never forget. Shared Hardships!

Ops SGM 2-22 IN (2013) I ran into PVT Hickey. I said “Hickey, you’re pretty motivated, do you want to be a Ranger?” He replied “ hell ya SGM.” The rest is history. Within 6 months of reporting to FT Drum he graduated Pre-Ranger, Ranger School & Airborne school all as a PVT(E-1).

Lose a sensitive item, we stop training & look for it. DUSTWUN in combat (sadly I’ve seen two), we stop all missions & look for our Soldiers. We need to start doing it for every Soldier who is missing. Hopefully this helps find SPC Harris safe & get him back to his squad.

Me & this Soldier did something today. We kept his family together. Seems simple but it’s not. Just take care of PEOPLE! I promise, they’ll tell their family, who will tell their friends, who will tell their friends....we’re all recruiters, every single day! Thanks @ArmyHRC

I’ve never really been into guns, fishing or hunting. I know, not the norm for a career Infantryman. Probably the first USARAK CSM ever. Maybe that’s why I was selected 😂. I’m gonna give this fishing a try today though. We’ll see! Have a great weekend.

Want to know what’s going on with your Soldiers? Put the phone down and talk to them. Don’t lead by text messages. It’s a constant complaint talking to Soldiers. We can do better, just saying.

@EODHappyCaptain In the 90’s it was the Camel Back. We just couldn’t understand how something that would keep us hydrated while on the move was so frowned upon? We had to wear it under our BDU top with the tube routed through our sleeve so not to be seen by leadership 😂. I’ll never forget it!

Met a Soldier last night being chaptered. He is prepared for his exit. #ThisIsMySquad is taking care of ALL of our Soldiers regardless of the situation they are in. This includes assisting them on their transition out. That’s exactly what his leadership was doing. #PeopleFirst

If Soldier’s are told to report @0530 for a 12 Mile Foot March & are instead told they are on CQ for 24 hrs, we have a problem. 1SG’s, let’s get this right. You own your DA 6. It’s not good for morale of the troops & more importantly...their families. We can do better.

I met a guy once (who follows me,just don’t know who) but we had completely different views on the world, the country. We had a beer & talked. Some little bar in Queens NY. He’s my friend till this day. I wish this was the same across our country. We may not agree, but let’s talk

The CG & I escorted a group of Soldiers to the FWA CIF to swap ACU ECWCS for OCP. Yes, it’s an issue here. SSG Shuman was waiting outside for his Soldiers. I asked why he didn’t exchange his… “I’m not worried about myself CSM, just my Soldiers.” #SelflessService #PeopleFirst

I wanted to be just like him. He was the leader we talk about today with TIMS; but it was 1994. He could have given up on me when I was at my worst but he didn’t…he easily could have! He believed in me & I know I made him proud. He passed away the other night. RIP Frank! RLTW!

24 years ago I ran up this road with my ruck, A/B bag with one goal,to be a Ranger. It was the toughest 3 weeks of my life. 18 of 54 of us would go to FT Benning. Not sure the end #’s but it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Thanks @PZanoff for a great day! #RLTW @82ndABNDiv
