It all starts with the nest. Many people think city pigeons are stupid because they can’t build nests at all, but that’s not true! They actually can and often do! But they don’t really need to, cause they used to nest on cliffs and in small caves, and then we gave them shelves.

Here’s a whole bunch of nuggets, from barely hatched to couple days old. Theyβ€˜re in a DIY thermo box with a small heater and fan because they still need to be kept toasty warm at this age, and we had to move them to a safer location to grow up at. Streets just ain’t great.

Next up of course is eggs; pigeons usually lay two, and when we switch them for fakes we always shine a light through (called candling) to check. First is a few days old, second was less than a week from hatching - it was already abandoned and dead though.

As promised the journey continues! Right after the porcupine stage the feathers start to open up and they get all fluffy again. And crumbly! There will be crumbled feather sheaths everywhere. Looks a bit like fake snow. These three were all from a big mass evacuation in March

Blink again and suddenly that’s it, grown up pigeon! All this happens in just barely a month give or take. If you work with a big active pigeon rescue like I do tho, you learn to spot the differences between subadult and fully adult pigeons in an instant from a bloody mile away.

Same black chick from the post before, just one week later. They lose the yellow tufts rather quickly too. This one’s a bit unusual though as normally they have hardly any iridescent feathers at this point, those tend to only come on with adulthood.

If you think three is big though, haha no. This was the entire result, 73 young pigeons, 22 chicks and 17 eggs too close to hatching were evacuated before the construction to close up the space the were nesting in began. 150m of bridge, over 100 nests. Not unusual sadly.

This whole process goes crazy fast by the way, at this point these were maybe a bit more than two weeks old. Sometimes parents already start laying the next clutch at this point as seen in the last picture. We bred them to reproduce as much as they possibly can, all year round.

Anyways that’s the end of the thread for now! Sadly this is also where most pigeons die - up to 90% never make it the first year, and considering they can get up to 20 years and are about as smart as a 3yo kid, it’s really just sad. (Also only photo not by me, only of me at work)

Went out in the pouring rain to pick up this fella, it’s not looking good though. Extremely underweight and with severe neurological symptoms. Pretty sure it would’ve died of hypothermia soon after if it hadn’t been picked up so quickly. Not sure if it’ll make it either way tho

@FemmeLifeAzadi That’s simply not true, unless youβ€˜re a pigeon yourself. Most diseases a pigeon can carry cannot infect humans, and those pathogens that can affect us are no more common on pigeons than they are on dogs, money, your shoes or anything else that touches the world outside.

New arrival today, poor kid’s barely more than skin and bones. Couple infusions later, at least the lil guy is showing some appetite Paramyxovirus is absolutely dreadful though, poor bird can’t even eat seeds right in front of its face. It’ll be a long road to a maybe recovery

@roseyfizzle It’s why I love baby birds in general, the ones that stay in the nest are always so ugly for a while, and utterly useless too but then they all turn into these absolutely amazing animals. I also lovingly call them little stinkers, even tho honestly they don’t even smell that bad

@drawn_at_random Oh yeah these spikes are utterly useless, we hate them. Pigeons love building their nests on these because they help hold sticks in place, and so many clumsy young pigeons end up getting speared on them, usually piercing the crop and dying from infection then. πŸ₯²

@Misa_Ryuichi In most cases it’s discarded threads or hair that are to blame! Not my photos, but we do regularly catch tangled pigeons to save their precious little feet from this fate too. And anyone can help by just picking up anything that could get tangled and throwing it away instead!

We’re on our way home from the vet now, here’s the x-ray and the bullet that was still stuck inside this poor bird. Luckily the shot missed everything relevant though, if it had made impact with any bones it would have shattered them. Most likely gonna make a full recovery now!

@Blank_spaces84 PMV, short for paramyxovirus is a virus that’s highly transmissible between pigeons, even just by close proximity. To humans it’s completely harmless. An infected pigeon can easily be recognised by varying degrees of neurological problems looking like this for example.

And here’s the reason why you should always feed the pigeons anyway; 180gr of pigeon is barely half a pigeon! Absolutely beyond malnourished, hanging on by a thread. Already got an infusion of fluids, which helped immensely, but it still has a long ways to go to recover fully

Feral pigeon, but wild at heart. 😀 (Warning, loud wing slap at end) Normally this is more the kind of attitude you’d expect from wood pigeons, especially the huffing. City pigeons are more likely to grunt at you instead, but sometimes you get fierce babies like this lady.
