I still have my steelbook DVD of the extended 3-hour TV cut of DUNE ‘84. As far as I know, it’s out of print. It wasn’t included on the recent Arrow 4K UHD set. David Lynch publicly disowned this cut and removed his name from the credits, hence - “Directed by Alan Smithee…”

I’m really glad that they preserved the IMAX ratio (for applicable scenes) on the 4K UHD release of #TopGunMaverick and adjusted ratios on the fly accordingly for scenes that weren’t IMAX. •EVERY• physical media release of a film shot this way should do this.

Checking out UNFORGIVEN for the first time since maybe the early 2000s (via a newly acquired 4K UHD BR). I do have vivid memories of seeing the film theatrically during its year of release in a less than stellar film print. This is the BEST the film has ever looked in my eyes.

I’ve been enjoying my recent re-watch of •pre-MCU• Marvel films as of late. Today - THE PUNISHER (which turns 20 this year). I was in the minority for thinking it was decent upon its original theatrical release. His brawl with the Russian is still awesome.

Speaking of movies, decided to re-visit Ang Lee’s HULK, which I haven’t watched in maybe a decade. I still think it’s a terribly undervalued super hero epic that takes risks and shows more stylistic ambition than most of the recent MCU offerings made with assembly line sameness.

Alden Ehrenreich is a fine actor, but Disney ABSOLUTELY FAILED in casting Anthony Ingruber for #SoloAStarWarsStory . He played a young version of Harrison Ford’s character in Age of Adeline and was a dead ringer for the actor in every way.

Okay. Here’s the deal. I’ve seen TRUE LIES on Laser Disc and VHS (I still have my 1996 copy). The new 4K UHD BR of it is - to be fair - the best it has ever look on home media. BUUUUUUT…it’s a truly mixed bag affair and hardly worth the insanely long wait. A real shame.

FAIR PLAY is an utterly intoxicating and razor sharply written workplace thriller set in the world of cutthroat finance analysts. It’s also a bravura showcase for Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor, who both give Oscar caliber performances. Easily one of Netflix’s better efforts

THE ABYSS •finally• coming to 4K UHD BR is huge news considering that its only physical media releases were on a non-anamorphic DVD, Laser Disc and VHS. It •NEVER• had an HD physical media release. Ditto for TRUE LIES. Getting ALIENS on 4K too is just icing on the cake.

I’ve made this habit of watching DANCES WITH WOLVES once every ten years or so since I saw it theatrically and was originally released on home video. This is probably my sixth or seventh full viewing. That buffalo hunt sequence will never be duplicated and still amazes.
