Apparently Coach Gary Ward’s Oklahoma State University teams used to mash. I had NEVER heard of this technique to help initiate the backside. Another tool for the box.
A young coach (only 19 years old) is so excited to join our staff, he went out and purchased his own fungo! Fires me up! I do have fungos for my coaches, lol.
I have read and heard Bonds wanted to swing like he was in a phone booth.
I notice the backside firing in unison, but his turn/rotation has direction because he hits through the ball with extension.

Long DOES like his hitters to work down on the low ball, which I was curious about after watching Philly hitters.
He speaks of being tight to the body, allowing a flat swing.
Some need to think “Swing Down” to “level” the bat off. Similar to “Throwing the Bat Head,” knowing where your barrel is in space.

*Lead With The Bat Head Everything Is A Lot Quicker.
*”Drop The Head.!”
Hitting through the ball. Good extension. Head down. Gaining ground (hip extension). “Tight swing” (inside ball, on line with ball). Matt Olson is good.

Some hitters must be taught to deliver the barrel, release the barrel because their barrel stays back behind their knob too long.
Swing knob, hands to ball, throw bat head, whatever, a hitter does have to get in. Some have said “inside rotation.” Hands can’t get stuck behind, but a hitter also can’t spin off the ball losing direction. Nuance. Individual. Fascinating stuff.
Every swinger of a bat needs to master this upper body move. WE spend a TON of time on it since it leads to consistency and barrels…in case you’re into that sort of thing😏.

I am convinced too many IF and OF coaches fall in love with full blown fungo. So much good defensive instruction can come from flipping, bouncing, rolling, and tossing the ball. This allows more direct contact and fundamental breakdown.
Rotate (Turn), don’t spin. Transfer, don’t lunge.
Turn and transfer can eliminate barrel dump and arm dominant swings. Brings barrel around.
Back Foot, Back Knee, Back Hip, Hands…… A Unit…… Not a late pivot.
I had never seen this! Tipped off about this video by

, Saint Francis had their own device back in the day! Fascinating video. Old school to the bone! A lot of validity, and some stuff we would pass on. “Gordie Gillespie and Tony Delgado Hitting Video.” Wow!
The late, Charlie Lau Jr. with a multi faceted drill to stay square longer, get extension through the ball, and create bat speed, featuring Lead Arm Extension and Top Hand Release.
To me, this is deep dive worthy! To me, it sounds similar to Mr.
@LattaDoug
, in that the load is from the move-out (stride), created by the ground. Both Mr. Ward and Mr. Latta like clean strides without twisting and turning. Fascinating stuff.
The late Charlie Lau Jr. astutely noted a KNOB UP produces a BARREL DROPPING/DUMPING which makes a long and slow swing. Lau Jr. astutely noted it keeps players from being able to take a level swing and make consistent contact.
“Short and Balanced,” Slow and Early, Slow Feet-Fast Hands. Many Ways to Think About Stride-Move Out.
Do Not Let Hands Drop When They Should Be In Swing Launch Mode, in Coordination with Body.
We are guessing without Mr. Bonds telling us, but when I see this I think of:
*Leverage/On Top Feel
*Barrel/Bat Control
*Knowing Where Barrel Is In Space
*Hitting Through The Ball

Know why you don’t agree with certain systems and philosophies. Be so knowledgeable you could even teach what you don’t agree with.
Teaching is individualized, not cookie cutter.
Fundamental principles are timeless.
Tyler Tuthill's four-hit shutout with 8 Ks on 94 pitches is App State's first complete-game shutout since Taylor Thurber, who was in attendance Saturday, threw a four-hit shutout against ULM in 2015 to give the Mountaineers their first-ever Sun Belt victory.
The rotation, which is not a synonym for spin, or referring to not having direction, clears room for the hands, and helps flatten the bat, as well as get the barrel to the ball deeper in the zone. Helps vs. plus velo.
The University of Saint Francis had their own overload/underload program. Coach Gillespie was head coach from 1977-1995, and 2006-2010. His resume is impressive.

Watching a clip from

featuring
@tomhouse
and Nolan Ryan, “Big Tex” talked about tucking his chin on his leg lift to help stay on line, to help his direction. This could be huge because so many lean backward, lose posture on their leg lift.
