Assistants you can’t attach your ego to your suggestions, right or wrong.
Whatever the Head Coach decides, you must sell it to the players like it’s the best thing since sliced bread.
United we stand, divided we fall!
As an Assistant, if a HC gives you an opportunity to be on staff, you give that HC everything you got. You go above and beyond to make him/her successful as possible.
Ubuntu; when one eats, we all eat.
Assistant Coaches when you get out of bed in the morning, call or text your Head Coach and ask him/her, “What’s one thing I could do today, that would make your day easier?”
Teamwork makes the dream work 💪🏻
Roles of an Assistant Coach:
- Be Loyal to the Program
- Be available and present
- Do the work
- Be willing to learn
- Find a speciality
- Communicate with HC
- Know your role
- Self Discipline
- Give suggestions
- Promote a unified message
Mediocre players HATE hearing the negatives about their game. GREAT players LOVE it! They don’t take it as an attack, they learn from it and get better.
Coaches get calls and messages all the time from parents telling them how to Coach. How many parents have received a message from a coach telling them how to parent?
I’m excited beyond belief to be the NEW Head Coach at Wesley Christian Prep. I can’t wait to work with these young men from different parts of the globe, making them and their futures my top priority. 🏀

A ship doesn’t sail on yesterday’s wind!
Assistant Coaches objectives:
1) Make your boss look good
2) Do the stuff no one else will do
3) Culture soldier
4) Get to know the players better
5) Keep showing up
Your child’s success or lack of success in sports does not indicate what kind of parent you are.
But having an athlete that is coachable, respectful, a great teammate, mentally tough, resilient and tries their best IS a direct reflection of your parenting.
Assistants, we must take notes on our HC’s verbiage, that way when we teach we’re also enhancing and speeding up the learning process.
Always asking the players, “Do you understand what’s being asked/said?”
Same team. Same page.
As an Assistant, if a Head Coach gives you an opportunity to be on the staff, you give that Head Coach everything you got. You go above and beyond to make him/her as successful as possible.
RECRUITING: Don't just recruit winners, because some are winners by association.
Recruit those who directly affect winning in terms of:
H- Humble
E- Enthusiasm
A- Attitude
R- Respect
T- Toughness
Talent with no H.E.A.R.T is like a nice car with no engine. Ur going nowhere fast
You can take care of a snake; feed it, house it, give it anything it could want, but it’ll still be a snake. When you start taking care of yourself and not putting every ounce into it, it will turn right around and bite you. Remember that when giving the wrong people your time.
“Winning is fun... Sure. But winning is not the point. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you've done is the point.” - Pat Summitt
I know I’m the new coach, but the teams that have played Wesley every year for the last 5-6 years all of a sudden don’t want to play Wesley anymore.
Can’t even get a text back, not answering my calls, what’s up?
We blame the kids for being soft, entitled and/or having self-esteem issues.
But, in reality, the blame should be on the parents.
How else is a kid learning how to act and respond to life, if the parents or “village” didn’t influence it?

An ideal “assistant coach” arrives early, helps set up practice, asks the HC what they need, actively participates in practice, stays positive and encouraging, connects with players off the court/field, uses love not fear to motivate, and ensures players they have their back.
You have the ball for 5% of the game. You don’t have the ball 95% of the game. Which do you think increases your teams chance to win the most? What you do when you have the ball or what you do when you don’t?
The process doesn’t mean just because you’re patient good things will happen. Good things happen when you consistently work hard and persevere despite not being there yet. But, in an effort to continually improve, one must never welcome the “I’ve arrived” mindset to stay.
All the under-the-radar high school kids still playing AAU basketball with average to below average teams, while attending small public schools….always wondering why they’re not getting noticed.
You’re too focused on comfort instead of playing at prep/a better AAU team!!!
It’s hard to outwork passionate people.
When you love something, you’re willing to work harder, commit more, sacrifice more and give more for it.
Make passion your competitive advantage.
I think there’s too much sugar in the world and not enough salt. Kids want to be challenged and humans want to aspire to something. You don’t win in athletics or in life with softness or selfishness.

In my 1 and only recruiting class w/ the women’s program. I helped transform a team that won 12 games the prev. season.
In that season, they won 24 games, won their conf. division, finished R-up in the conf. tourney and made their first nat’l tourney app in school history.
