Word of advice. If you have a chance to be a HC, go be it. I was an assistant coach for 5 years at a top tier Cali Juco and I worked for a Hall of Fame. He taught me everything I could know until I actually became a HC. If it’s a bad job, make it into a good one! Winners will win
Word of advice for coaches trying to break into coaching. Go work for a veteran JUCO coach that has a coaching tree. Being a support staff is cool but if you want to learn how to coach, go work at a JUCO!
I don’t care what anyone says Rusty Smith is one of the best ever in Cali Juco. Came in my locker room and complimented my guys on how they completed and stuck together. I worked for him for 5 years and he taught me everything I know! Salute Big Horse. Future HOF.
This year we put together the best season at Cerro Coso in school history. 22-7, ranked as high as
#14
in the state. We have worked extremely had to build this thing from day 1. The real ones know the challenges to be successful here!

4-years are dealing with what JUCO guys having been dealing with forever, rebuilding your roster every single year. Hire JUCO coaches on your staff! Mizz, La Tech, Wake, Montana St etc are hitting home runs with hires.
Most kids are in JUCO because they have bad habits. They say “old keys don’t unlock new doors”. Habits are changed now, not when you get to the destination!
Overall a great year. We finished 18-9. Won 12 straight games. Scored over 100 6x. Just missed out on playoffs. We have increased win total both years. The future is bright for our program.
Men’s Hoops
Final: Coso 103 | Mt. SAC 65
With this win over the Mounties, Coyotes move to 11-1 (1-0 Conf) on the year and extend their win streak to 11.
ELEVEN. STRAIGHT. WINS.

In 17 months WE have been able to build something special with good ole hard work.
Year 1: 12 wins (increase of 5 wins)
Year 2: 13 wins with 10 games to go.
S/O to my guys for laying down the foundation for a successful program! 📈📈
Our program has and will continue to speak on itself.
Is Ridgecrest in the middle of nowhere? ✅
Do I coach kids really hard? ✅
Is there nothing to do besides basketball and school?✅
Go ask my former players how I am!
I appreciate the negative recruiting tho 🫶

Coaches RT for me!
I’ve been lucky to land some really good players and also lost out on a lot good players. 2 things can be guaranteed. We tell you exactly how it is and we don’t bad mouth programs we’re competing against in recruitment.

I know there are still a lot of good players in Cali Juco that can help NAIA/D’s across the nation! I have 5 of them and I know there are a lot others out here.
Just waiting for that June text, “Hey coach is such and such still available” 😴😴
The season has come to an end. Finished at 12-15 (6-10). This is just the beginning. I took over this program in Sept and my players allowed me to push them as hard as I could to achieve the maximum effort. I appreciate every single one of my guys!

Always try your best to return emails to potential coaches/players even if it won’t work out. I emailed 100’s of schools with no response. I always remember
@CoachRexWalters
took the time to respond even though he didn’t have a spot on staff.

If you have coached Juco long enough this is familar. Phase 1, the roster you ll think have a couple weeks before school. Phase 2, 1st day of school and trying to figure out who bailed late. Phase 3, whose quitting before/after game. Phase 4, whose coming back after Xmas break.
The orange round ball has done so much for me. I’ve been able to travel the world, meet my wife, gain mentors, find God, fail, succeed and most importantly impact life’s. Keep running your race against yourself!
Used to be that No.1 job description of a college basketball coach was “crisis management coordinator” but no longer. Now you must be a “roster management supervisor.” Nearly impossible to build a program. You must build a team year-by-year. The new normal. 🏀😏
