It's been a lot of fun working with
@KathrinHille
over the past 6 months on the research that went into this piece. We looked into little-known, privately-backed Chinese companies that have been stealthily pursuing ambitious projects overseas:
Friend just texted me, horrified, after realizing that her ex was a part of the violent mob in the Capitol today. He’s a well-spoken West Point grad w/an MBA who lives in Navy Yard and works as a bizdev exec. We’ve gone on double dates. These terrorists are hiding in plain sight.
A guy who wears Bonobo suits and played on his Bethesda high school lacrosse team can be a terrorist just as easily as a guy wearing a MAGA hat and building a bunker in the hills. I don’t really have a more eloquent point to make here.
This is the first time I’ve seen a country’s leader so publicly revoke an existing Chinese security agreement.
“Our system of democracy and justice systems are different so we will go back to those that have similar systems with us” - Fiji PM Rabuka
@PekingMike
I don’t feel comfortable releasing his name publicly because I don’t want my friend to be targeted in any way (it doesn’t seem safe, judging by some of the responses I’ve received already) but will look into sharing with relevant authorities.
Why are some Chinese officials so afraid of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? Why are they denying ordinary Chinese people the platform for entertainment, inspiration and connection?
Why are some US politicians so afraid of

As celebrity TikTok videos flood my feeds, I think this may be a good time to remind people that TikTok censors free speech, is subject to Beijing’s data appropriation powers, and transfers private user data to Chinese servers
Rabuka appears to be upholding his campaign promise not to sign any security pacts with China and instead, to return Fiji to its “comfortable niche with Australia” in alignment with “the western style of democracy.” AUS/NZ officers will remain in Fiji.
This is pretty significant.
HKEX is now acting in accordance with Beijing’s rules for IPO applications filed with mainland exchanges, which means negative statements about China’s laws, policies, or business environment are forbidden.
Just now, Canada's government has ordered three Chinese companies to divest from Canadian lithium mining companies - citing national security concerns following a review of foreign SOEs engaged in the nation's critical minerals sector.
And by the way, China Shipbuilding Industry Corp - the conglomerate that has refurbished and built all three of China’s aircraft carriers - is currently held in the investment portfolios of our country’s largest public pension funds in CA, NY, TX, etc. University endowments too.
China’s third aircraft carrier takes shape, with ambitions to challenge U.S. naval dominance. This is the terrific work of my fabulous

team.
This refers to an MoU signed between the Fiji Police Force and China’s Ministry of Public Security in 2011 for “police to police cooperation.” Since then, Fiji has sent dozens of officers to China for training and received equipment donations like drones and surveillance systems.

Hearing fellow representation-starved Asian Americans say that they’re going to support the new Mulan live-action movie and cast no matter what and don’t want to “get into the politics”... I don’t have a word for this feeling.
REPORT RELEASE: The new EO prohibits Americans from investing in Chinese military companies, including 31 companies named by the Pentagon. RWR has identified an additional 128 publicly traded companies that will be implicated by the investment ban.
These are just some of the headlines from Asian American media site NextShark over the past year. I’m distressed but not surprised by what happened in Atlanta yesterday, and I promise that none of your Asian friends or colleagues are surprised either. Just tired.
I hope all the researchers from Chinese think tanks that don’t exist in real life were able to find some interesting info on my LinkedIn. Sorry I declined your invitations to visit Beijing and discuss “the possibility of cooperation.”
Xiao Zhen Xie fought back against her attacker, but the physical and emotional scars cut deep. According to her daughter, she cannot see out of her left eye and the other eye is still bleeding. She is “very traumatized, very scared.”
If you’re a police officer answering a call with three colleagues, and none of you can figure out how to take a fully cooperative 140lb unarmed man into custody w/o injecting him with a lethal dosage of ketamine and killing him.. You’re in the wrong line of work

I was not emotionally prepared for this many people in my everyday, non-work life to casually ask if I think China is going to invade Taiwan anytime soon.
Last week, AkademikerPension became the first public pension fund in Denmark to divest from Chinese debt and equity holdings due to China’s systematic violations of human rights: “We can no longer turn a blind eye to it."
And if the U.S. were to walk away from our security commitment to Taiwan - handicapping Taiwan’s ability to credibly deter and defend against Chinese aggression - you truly think such a destabilizing policy would reduce and not raise the risk of military conflict?
It’s a cacophony of joy out here. Motorcycles are revving their engines. Even the garage and delivery trucks are honking. Fireworks in the near distance. Brb - I’m going on a run to 46’s new house.
This censorship undermines the WHO’s credibility and legitimacy as an objective global authority. Pandemics don’t recognize geopolitics, and the WHO is endangering public health by continuing to exclude Taiwan from the narrative.

Thanks for sharing! I hadn’t seen this interview. It seems he’s prepared to take a cautious yet firm approach to reengagement with Australia, NZ, UK, and US - on his own terms and seeking equal partnership.
The TSP is just the tip of the iceberg. Next, there’s California. New York. Texas. Florida. Call your representatives because CalPERS, CalSTRS, NYSCRF, NYSTRS, Texas ERS, and FRS are all guilty as charged.

What do you think is the next top three things that can be done to reduce the amount of amount of cash the ccp have.
1. Revoke HongKong special trade status
2. Require Chinese companies listed on exchanges to be audited
3. ???
No, it’s very sane. To politicize something is to make it an issue of public concern. And the risk of millions of federal employees having a vested financial interest in Chinese military contractors should certainly be an issue of public concern.
White House trying to stop gov’t employee pension fund from investing in int’l index funds with exposure to China.
This is INSANE.
I’ve lived through a politicized pension fund board. It’s a disaster for the pensioners. Pathetic.
Those in the China policy sphere who have failed to denounce the use of caustic and irresponsible language characterizing China as dirty, unsanitary, “unleashing the China virus,” etc. are complicit in the rise in hate crimes and the collective trauma of Asian Americans.
The WH has released a fact sheet on the new Executive Order signed by Biden to clarify and expand EO 13959. It gives Treasury authority to prohibit US investment in Chinese military companies, their direct subsidiaries, and Chinese surveillance companies.
The U.S. Department of Treasury has published an official set of FAQs and list of entities to provide guidance for the implementation of EO 13959, which prohibits U.S. investment in Chinese military companies (as identified by the Department of Defense).
For those questioning this move - it’s totally possible to invest in emerging markets on an institutional level without investing in problematic Chinese companies - even using an indexing strategy!

17 injured Indian soldiers reportedly died due to lack of in-time rescue, which reflects the serious flaws of Indian army to provide emergency treatment to the wounded. This is not an army with real modern combat capabilities at plateau. Indian public opinion needs to stay sober.

Dentons is taking the same exit strategy as Sequoia Capital
and spinning off its China business into a separate legal entity… but its Hong Kong offices will remain a part of the global firm. Curious how long until that’s no longer the case.
If u follow the global/Chinese law industry you'll know that it was a big deal when Dentons added the Chinese characters "大成" to its global logo in 2015. Now it is delinking with China (and will drop the Chinese characters from its name) 1/3

Oh and remember when the dean told a senior, who had a successful online fitness business selling workout guides and gym clothes, that her IG was too sexual and she had the choice to either take it down or be disenrolled? In her last month of high school?

Randy Park says he tried unsuccessfully to go to the scene of the crime, and he still hasn’t been contacted by local police. He had to call the examiner to “figure out the body retrieval situation” and just wants to put his mom to rest.

Just had two more packages stolen from my building today and it doesn’t sound like a big deal but I want to cry, I’m tired. We’ve had near daily break-ins for the past 2 weeks. Someone was banging on my door the other night trying to get in. People are getting really desperate.
Section 4 of the EO specifies that the investment ban applies to any entity that is “publicly [listed] as a subsidiary of an entity already determined to be a Communist Chinese military company” - implicating all 129 companies that we identified.
Trying to understand the full scope of Chinese companies’ operations is wild. Like this company makes refrigerators and air conditioners, but also electronic warfare and radar systems. And this company leases commercial yachts, but also supplies enemy identification equipment.
