Looking back at the Wexford Footballers
@OfficialWexGAA
defeat to Dublin yesterday 🟣🟡
In this short thread I will set out how to set up a Development & Performance Plan
You can use this for any team, county, code or sport ⚽️
A thread 🧵

It’s not surprising Tottenham are doing well under Ange
Team talk before an Australian game back in 2015
Don’t have to shout and roar to motivate players
Most people- including the players- weren't aware Sean Hickey lost his father Bartley Hickey (RIP) the day before the game but wanted to play to make him proud. A testament to Sean as a man & I encourage his
@LondainGAA
family to rally around in support of Sean & his mother now😔
Right...the penalty for Kerry was correct decision; sending off for Dublin was the most obvious sending off ever; drag back of Stephen O Brien in 2nd half was stone wall penalty! Time to get rid of biased analysts or those with an agenda...we & the game deserve better than that👊
As
@JoeBrolly1993
rightly points out- all 8 Division 4 teams gone from C’Ship by 23rd June. Fellas spoofing about Down putting it up to Mayo on big day out. Still out. Players expect more nowadays. Meanwhile look at these lads-devastated at winning ‘only’ a Tiered Competition😂👊
Yesterday my 5 older brothers & I carried our Dad Seán Deely’s coffin on our shoulders in Ballykelly
Today the flags in his golf course don’t fly
He had a sharp intellect, a deep understanding of sport, a love of classical music & an insightful political mind. He’ll be missed😞
Who would have thought in the snow London Gaelic football team would manage to get access to better facilities to train in than most Irish
#GAA
teams! The full sized soccer pitch in the indoor Dome in work at QPR FC has certainly come in handy for us this week!👍
Disappointed to hear today that
@LondainGAA
have decided to look for a different Senior Football team Manager for next season. Am very proud of the work myself & my backroom staff have done in the last 4 years with a really great group of players. I wish them all the best👍😊
Saw Inter-county coach saying a B-Championship for the
#GAA
would be bad because RTE wouldn't show much highlights!😳 🙈Who cares?? Do we do this for a 5min clip on tv or to win football games? I know what I want- to win games in a competition that we have a chance of winning!👊
While the hallowed ground of Croke Park is used by the Dublin subs to top up their fitness levels in prep for bigger games to come...many county players from around the country never get to even play there
I find that interesting & strangely fitting🤔

Really interesting observations by Roy Keane a few weeks ago re the Ronaldo situation. If a manager is unable or unwilling to confront a difficult situation head on, it’ll cause problem down the line. & unfortunately the player will suffer. Poor management
‘Advanced 3-team Transition Game’
Love this game, for Gaelic football, Hurling, soccer etc
Saw this game first being done by the Juventus team of Zidane, Davids, Del Piero in 1999 at their training base in Turin
All 3 teams constantly engaged, highly chaotic, quick reactions
In GAA there is absolutely no difference in the rules for a GK & an outfield player
The only surprising thing is it took so long for teams to start using the GK outfield more. It’s a potent weapon!
I’d have 1 of my full back line doing GK training also👍
Delighted to be finally back involved with the
@OfficialWexGAA
Senior Football Team on the coaching & performance planning side after 12 years away from the team
Some great work happening there with a top Manager in John Hegarty & a really great bunch of lads. Here’s to 2023🤞⚽️
It’s actually sad to see what’s happened to the Leinster Championship
You could see this happening a long long time ago
A lot of people are responsible for this debacle
First job of a sporting organisation is to take care of their competition. They’ve failed.
Dublin-Meath used
If David Clifford is doing this from 40m out close to the sideline…in the wind & rain of FEBRUARY☔️
…what’s he going to be doing on the hard ground of Croke Park in July 🤯
@sportsdes
Ah Jesus Des & Peter...that’s so last decade. And boring. Ask some proper questions and have a real discussion about where the GAA is rather than this kind of nonsense
This is simply incredible kicking from David Clifford ⚽️
Whether you think he is the best ever
(I do 🤚 )
or you don’t even think he’s the best in the country
…just sit back & enjoy the genius of him
This is a disgrace...
Not Cork or Waterford’s fault.
If my son was involved in a game like this, I would tell him to go play a different sport.
@officialgaa
your competition structures are a disgrace. This is where bullsh
#t
tradition gets you. These are actually children 👎👎👎
What an incredible last-gasp tackle
Love how he gets in around the front of him (and watch how he speeds up in the last few metres in order to do so)

Gaelic football is in an existential crisis…
And the GAA don’t even seem to know it
Croke Park and Provincial Councils continue to bury their heads in the sand and say there is no problem.
Today’s provincial finals were a farce, an embarrassment
A quick thread 🧵

Few very basic principles here on how you respond to different opposition presses on your Kick Outs

Ja Fallon 👌👏
3 pts kicked with that wand of a left foot in the All Ireland Final of 1998 in Galway’s win v Kildare
All in the 1st half as far as I remember.
One of my favourite games ever!
Looking forward to Sunday ⚽️😉
Is there currently a better kicker off the ground in Gaelic football than Monaghan’s Rory Beggan? ⚽️
Not sure there is
He knocked it over like an 8 iron ⛳️
Delighted to have passed my PhD viva earlier today😊 (with minor corrections)
It’s been a long 4.5 year journey
Thank you to Prof Warren Gregson from Manchester United & Manchester Met Uni and Dr Phil Hayes for a challenging but thoroughly enjoyable viva voce. And to Dr Penny
Very very proud of this bunch of lads for everything they have done this season. People don't know the sacrifices these
@LONDAINGAA
lads make, they're a credit to themselves & their families. Its been a joy to work with them for d past 3 years, will see now what the future holds.
Feeling very proud tonight of this group of London lads who we gathered together 3 months ago. Sometimes hard work, sacrifice & lots of coaching can get a few little rewards along the way. Now to enjoy at home a nice Cuba Libre from Havana with the
@LONDAINGAA
General Manager😉😎
Here’s what my Coaching Session Plans look like:
1). Chaotic warm up with ball - 15min
2). Passing pattern - 10min
3). Match-based scenario - 15min
4). Phase of Play - 25min
5). SSG/MSG/LSG - 25min
Session total - 90min
See breakdown below 👇
1a- Chaotic warm up with ball
PhD manuscript submitted ✅😉🥂
Really looking forward to the exciting next steps now
Although (as always), if you’ve an interesting curve-ball project or opportunity, throw it into the mix and who knows where we’ll end up 😉
‘Physiological Demands, Seasonal Variation, and
For all my English soccer friends & colleagues who keep asking me what the rules of Gaelic Football are...lads, there are no rules 👊🏐🙈😎 (*and this was before the game even started)
Delighted to be ratified last night by the Executive &Clubs of
@LONDAINGAA
to continue for a 4th season as Manager of this great group of lads. New cycle begins of developing young London born players & integrating some top players from Ireland. Loads of work to do- can't wait!👍
I was looking at a video of some of the best dummies in Gaelic football this morning on Twitter
Great thread 🧵
@Score_Beo
This is the greatest dummy I’ve ever seen!⚽️
For the context- the winning score in the last minute to win a county final!
Wow 😯👏
One of my favourites:
Advanced 3 Team Transition Game👊
2 zones, attack 1 end, if you score proceed to attack opposite end. But both teams can tackle you in their zones🏐
Saw this for first time in a Juventus session in Turin in 1999 with Zidane, Davids & Del Piero😳👌⚽️
This would warm the heart ❤️
A great send off for Shane McGowan🥃
If you’re going to go, go like this…
With your family & friends dancing in the church aisles
And everyone singing and clapping
👏
Proud to be Irish ☘️ 🇮🇪
An unfortunate move recently I see in a small minority ofS&C coaches/SS/performance scientists is believing their own hype about how much they impact the performance of the team. Remember to remain in the ‘support services’ realm, leave the match-winning to the players 👍⚽️😉
My type of half-time speech
1) Trust in the process 👨💻
2) Simple language key words🔑
3) Position-specific 🏃🏽♂️
4) Identify issues 👨🔬
5) Come up w/ solutions ✅
6) Keep emotions in check 📢
7) Remind them what got them there🏆
8) Positive reinforcement 👏
This is just my own personal opinion, but is it not a bit cruel to ask the same players to take a second penalty?
Especially for a player to have missed, to then ask him to take another one
Surely after the first 5 penalties, it goes onto the rest of the team
#ArmaghvMonaghan
This is a terrible idea
13 a side will result in even more focus on S&C and athleticism- when we need more focus on coaching the skills of the game & decision-making. And even more defensive football.
Cross lost because they were beaten by the better team on the day…at football
So proud of this group of players for what they've done & the work they've put in so far this year. Back in Nov we had only 16 players & trained nearly all season on a rugby pitch. Good people make a good organisation & I'm lucky enough to have the best backroom team in the GAA👍
Say what? There seems to be some confusion here..I thought the first round of the Connacht Provincial Championship was
@LondainGAA
v
@Galway_GAA
, which- as far as I know- has not yet been played. Unless the lads played without me👊! Perhaps
@sligogaa
can clear this one up?🤔🙄🇳🇬
🙄🤐9 competitive games in 8 months and another season over before the championship has practically begun. Don’t listen to the naysayers people, change is good & is needed! I’ll keep banging the drum until the powers that be of the GAA listen 👊
Wexford, Waterford, London, Wicklow, Tipperary, Carlow, Fermanagh are out of the
@officialgaa
cship.
They're training since Nov, played 7 league & 2 cship games. Thats 9 games in 8 months.
There are still people who think the dysfunctional system we have doesnt need change.
Very happy to get the 1st vaccine jab (aged 38). No side effects (so far)- pls trust science and not the crazy anti-vaxers! I have zero time for this Tory govt & even less for that clown Boris🤡...well done
#NHS
on a great job 👏
Ireland...come on, get going now☘️
I’m really struggling to see the benefit of the ‘Attacking Mark’ in Gaelic football
O Byrne Cup last night- little 25m dink passes inside the 45m line, then game stops for a free 🤷♂️
I was supportive of original idea by
@SmallerFishGAA
to promote long balls inside the 21m line
@VirginRadioUK
@Q102FeelGood
Poor auld England 🏴 are really having a really tough time of it at the moment
First Brexit, then the hard right tories, cost of living crisis….now Ryan-bloody-Tubridy
Ireland 🇮🇪 1 England 🏴 0…. again
Feel very lucky this little fella Caiden Rajathurai Deely came along this summer to keep myself &
@BrinRajathurai
on our toes. He’s certainly living up to the old gaelige meaning of his name ‘Warrior’! And managing to keep his Sri Lankan/Irish heritage alive also 🇮🇪🇱🇰😊
Look where Peter Canavan came from to score this goal ⚽️
Mugsy caught & held up the ball beautifully, & released it with the perfect pop pass & screen
Of course Peter the Great did the rest 😇
Can someone explain to me the rationale behind the regional draw of the Tailteann Cup?
Am I missing something? Is it covid? Cost cutting?
Wexford v Offaly again
Surely one of the goals of competition restructuring was the chance to play teams you don’t typically play in C’Ship 🤷♂️
Here's an idea- with such quality clearly on show throughout the
#GAA
Leagues & public appetite to see/hear about the lower division games also, why not run a Division 3/4 League programme just like there's the Premier League & excellent Football League shows? Just a thought🤔
@cathynewman
@IsabelOakeshott
what was the point of this line of questioning
@cathynewman
?
They are not the questions the public want answered. Who cares where the story was broken, how, and the effect on journalists’ contacts?
Not sure why you’re wearing this video as a badge of honour
But but but…I thought Joe Brolly said Gooch couldn’t win the hard ball inside (just shows what he knew)
Some finisher Gooch…probably the best there was at the side-foot finish 👏⚽️

Pretty poor stuff there
Down on the back of the Achilles when the ankle is already in plantar flexion.
Could do a lot of damage to the ankle joint and/or Achilles tendon
Deserved the Red card 🟥
Like many PhD researchers, I need to read more! So I’ve challenged myself to read (at least!) 1 article a day for the next 365 days. Today is Day 1 and no better place to start than this excellent article by

@AaronJCoutts

If Jason Sherlock was the 1st ‘celebrity’ footballer- is David Clifford now the first superstar GAA player?
Haven’t seen quite the same reaction as this for any other player (to this extent- I know big following also for Michael Murphy, Joe Canning etc)
What is the point in this? For either team? They should both be competing against teams at their appropriate quality level- U20 is still about development. People might laugh at this scoreline but this is not right & is not acceptable. What an absolute ridiculous system...👎

Congrats to all delegates who stood up and professed the current status quo system to be utterly broken
And proceeded to vote for....
...the status quo 😳🤯
Back to 2 championship games per season for the vast majority of teams 👏👏👏
1) Right, for my own tuppance worth, a quick Twitter thread about the potential restructuring of
#GAA
competitions & idea of a 'Paidi O Shea Tier 2 Championship' for Gaelic Football. Blog post with a bit more detail in A Letter to John Horan coming up on
Is there a more moany crowd out there in the
#GAA
world than Inter County Managers??*
GAA decision - complain
GAA no decision - complain
GAA games- complain
GAA no games - complain
(*current only🙄😎)
1) Quick thread on a season spent in Div4 & knocked out of C’Ship after 2 games. I am so proud of these
@LondainGAA
lads & what they achieved this year. We had a turnover of 15 players & trained on Rugby 4G. It made be very proud to see them come within 4pts of Galway in C’Ship😊
'In Defence of Jim McGuinness - And why I admire him more now than ever!' A tough day for Jim today, but you learn more from defeat than victory. A quick Blog post about the news today. Available to all
My advice to Henry Shefflin would be to stay well clear of the Kilkenny job
Not good to follow the Master
Continue the great work he’s started at Galway- there’s an All Ireland there for him (2nd best team in Ireland last year)
The Kilkenny job will be there for him again 👑
Finally made my debut in Loftus Road at age 35🙄, under Manager Andy Sinton in end of season QPR FC staff game. We won, I scored, Andy was complementary, happy days in the sun in West London...a lot of fun to play in the home of my boyhood club ☺🤘🏽
Proud of the
@LONDAINGAA
lads today for the hard work they've put into this over the last few weeks to get this team prepared for the beginning of the
#GAA
League. 7 debutants starting, another 3 coming on; 6 London born starters & 18 new players integrated into the squad👍
#proud
In the last 2 weeks GAA Provincial Councils spoke about the importance of their competitions & maintaining their finances
Here’s something for them to do then…
GAA Indoor Air Dome🏟⚽️
Why do only Connacht have this?
Why not Leinster, Ulster, Munster or Dublin?
Who agrees?🤔
The Dubs’ Warm up 😂
In Leicester Square watching the big game with my old fellow London GAA coach
@RIVERSIDEBOY79
We’re still Not sure is that a good or a bad thing to see in your team on all Ireland final day?!
After having an inspiring talk by
@bernardjackman
a few months back, it was a real pleasure to have Harry Redknapp come visit the
@LONDAINGAA
team last night in prep for
#GAA
Championship. Harry stayed for the full session, spoke to the lads & told plenty of top class stories!👍
Dublin v Derry in League Final at Croker is great and all…
but GAA people should also take note of the GAA C’ship being launched by a Div 4 team (what I’m sure are a great group of young lads) having to play a relatively decent Div 1 team…
and get beaten by 27 points
I would
