This morning, Chula Vista Police helped shut down another illegal pot shop at 452 Third Avenue, across the street from an elementary school. There are no cannabis businesses yet approved in Chula Vista. Unlicensed cannabis businesses are illegal, and will be shut down.
Putting the brakes on street racing in Chula Vista. Officers impounded two vehicles this weekend involved in an illegal street race. Both were driving over 80mph on surface streets. The vehicles were towed from the scene and impounded for 30 days

Mater Dei High School currenty in SECURE CAMPUS (no one can enter or exit from campus). Police on scene with DFR drone, working w/school security to verify no threats after school received call from anonymous person making a threat. So far, checks ok and officers roving campus.
Around 10 am, we received multiple calls regarding a man walking around the mall w/ a gun. CVPD patrol confronted the man in a Best Buy & used de-escalation techniques in order to take him into custody w/o harm to himself or the public.
Yesterday, CVPD held a holiday food drive at Southwestern College. Officers gave out over 200 turkeys and fixings for the families who came for this drive-through event. We wish everyone very happy and healthy holidays!
***NO ACTIVE THREAT*** We are aware of concerns of an “active shooter” at Rancho Del Rey Middle School this morning. CVPD School Resource Officers (SROs) have been on campus since before CVPD received the call, and there was never a known threat to the school or staff. (cont.)

Keeping CV safe. Man reported breaking into a car. Suspect was armed. Officers located more than 50 rounds of ammunition, almost 500 M30 pills believed to be fentanyl. Suspect was arrested and taken to jail on multiple gun and drug related charges.

The investigation is ongoing but the Otay Ranch Town Center is not on lock down. At this time there does not appear to be evidence of a hate crime nor a nexus to terrorism. The Chula Vista Police Department expects to release more information later this evening.
UPDATE: THE SCENE IS SAFE! CVPD officers have confirmed that Mater Dei High School is safe and the threat was NOT credible. Both Mater Dei HS and Veterans Elementary are no longer on lockdown or secure campus.
Shooting reportedly occurred during a dispute between 2 groups. There does not appear to be an active threat to the mall nor surrounding neighborhoods. Officers remain on the scene gathering evidence.
Our officers go above & beyond to help members of our community on a daily basis. After this individual's wheelchair battery died & no other transport was readily available, officers pushed him home, which was located a mile away! Officer Hine Jr. had a huge smile all the way. 🥰

Tonight, officers spotted a vehicle doing donuts in the middle of 900 H Street. Officers stopped the vehicle, preventing a potentially dangerous situation. Ultimately, the driver was arrested for exhibition of speed and taken to jail. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
The Chula Police Department is aware of a planned Peace Rally in the Memorial Park area. The organizers plan to remain in the park while they play music and worship.

Last month, we deployed a new drone called Skydio 2. It avoids obstacles using collision avoidance tech. It can search for missing persons, inspect dangerous packages,search hard-to-access areas & rapidly locate fleeing suspects. It is another tool that helps CVPD!

Last night, officers responded to a call regarding reckless drivers doing donuts on basketball courts. Multiple vehicles were still on scene when CVPD arrived. Videos showed a car doing donuts causing damage. The driver was arrested. His vehicle, was towed & impounded for 30 days
Although today’s protest was canceled, I was pleasantly surprised to drive by and see this peaceful, diverse and passionate group together with our Chula Vista Police Department.
