The Zenithian Trilogy of Dragon Quest is a collection of some of the very best JRPGs of their era, and I sincerely hope they'll get some kind of attention from Square Enix.
I think it's high time they become more accessible as ports for modern systems, and in time, as remakes.
If there is any person who deserves a legendary-status in the games-industry, it's Yuji Horii.
Thank you for gifting the world with Dragon Quest, and thank you for always being a bright and shining example of how industry-leaders should be.
Hero.
12 days until Dragon Quest Day 2024.
We've gone a long time without any substantial news on both DQXII and DQIII 2DHD, and with Square Enix' recent announcement of changes in release-strategy it would probably be safe to assume that major news is coming up.
What do you think?
Dragon Quest Slime appreciation post
- Mascot of the franchise
- Extremely simple design can be used anywhere
- Has birthed an entire monster-type
- Significant impact on the series' evolution
- Have been in EVERY Dragon Quest game
- Is all around perfect
- Look at him
I'm happy that the next Nintendo-console being seemingly around as powerful as the PS4 is more and more regarded as a positive now.
How players perceive the console's technology is way more important than actual technology.
We don't need better tech.
We need better games.
A thing about Dragon Quest IX, and what I feel like we lack when it comes to modern games, is disconnected narratives.
Games and their worlds can feel small and restrictive if we only experience one continuous story.
I love DQIX's world and the way the stories are presented.
Final Fantasy IV is actually an amazing game. I THINK I'm nearing the end, but the narrative keeps on moving and getting more and more whacky, which I absolutely love.
The ATB combat-system is making some encounters seriously challenging. It's frustrating, but fun.
FF4 is good.
Grinding is obviously not for everyone. It's a tedious process when required, and it can create some truly awful padding.
On the other hand, some people, myself included, enjoy grinding quite a bit. It has some meditative values that feels rewarding.
I like FF2.
No spoilers.
Playing Dragon Quest IX is making me question how I didn't pick it up 15 years ago.
I haven't had the time to complete it due to work, but it's one of the best DS games I've ever played.
I also have a thing for when trains play a larger role in games.
I like trains, ok?
Recenty, I've been thinking a lot about Dragon Quest XI S.
I think it's the only game I've ever played for over 100 hours without a longer break.
That speak volumes about its quality, and reward-structure, which I believe is the single most important aspect in a video game.
I have very high hopes for Dragon Quest in the West moving forward.
With Square Enix' shift to focus on their larger IP's and change in leadership, I hope they'll realize how much of a potential there is with its Western fanbase.
Let's bring EVERYTHING to EVERY platform.
Few franchises has the longevity and soul that Dragon Quest has. A franchise that has survived for 35+ years and is still thriving is one that deserves to continue to live on.
Dragon Quest XII is by far my most anticipated game of this entire decade.
BEST video game franchise.
An official Western release of Dragon Quest X is literally one of the things I've ever wanted the most in gaming.
I know it's improbable and a long-shot, but seeing clips and screenshots of this game on my timeline is making me froth at the mouth of pure hopium.
More DQ. Now.
This art for the remakes of the Dragon Quest Erdrick Trilogy is another reason why Akira Toriyama's art is legendary, and immortal.
The artwork is blending that of Team Asano's game-covers, and it works absolutely perfectly.
November 14th and DQ3 2DHD can't come soon enough.
Video games and the culture behind them have morphed into a very specific set of rules on how you finish them. It's almost as if games are expected to be a certain length because of how long they 'should' take to complete.
It could take you 1 week or 6 years. It's your adventure.
Dragon Quest 11 is a 100 hour game with no caveats. no “oh rebirth or starfield can be 40-150 hours long depending on side quests!” no. i have only done 12 side quests, beelining the main quest, im 70 hours deep and only now starting the 3rd and final act. its a classic epic tale
Dragon Quest IX is absolutely one of, if not the best RPG on the DS. Chrono Trigger and Pokémon HG/SS are up there too.
In general, the reward structure and game worlds in Dragon Quest are some of the very best the genre has, and especially DQIX nails these elements perfectly.
Dragon Quest is hurting as a franchise because of the lack of accessibility. The original trilogy on Switch is a good start, but so many of the games, specifically the Zenithian Trilogy (DQ IV - VI) are so good, but difficult to play legitimately.
Give us Zenithian Collection.
November 14th 2024.
Dragon Quest 1, 2 and 3 2DHD Remake.
The entire Erdrick Trilogy will finally release later this year.
I'm beyond hyped. Also awesome to get a word from Yuji Horii.
Let's fucking go.
The more I pop in and play Dragon Quest XI S, the more I realize that it might be my favorite video game of all time.
There is SOMETHING about the design of this franchise that make me never want to put it down.
I almost only play Dragon Quest, and it's so awesome.
As a diehard Dragon Quest fan, I feel silly for almost deliberately avoiding Final Fantasy games in recent years.
I've only ever played some of VII and X, but I never actually finished any of them.
I'm really looking forward to try the franchise.
But even still - DQ for life.
Dragon Quest was designed like a bedtime-story for Japanese gamers by Yuji Horii, and I can definitely feel that.
Using Dragon Quest to wind-down after a long day is something I can recommend for everyone.
Currently doing that with DQIV.
It's so meditative and soothing.
The first couple of hours in Dragon Quest XI captures perfectly the feeling that so many players has been seeking for years; that nostalgic feeling of childlike wonder and joy of opening af brand new game and starting it for the first time.
That's the magic of Dragon Quest.
Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake is going to be a pivotal moment for the franchise.
I have high hopes that the HD-2D formular will succeed and hopefully give DQ some much needed attention.
So far, all the previews looks to be very positive, and I can't wait for November 14th.
Credits for Final Fantasy IV.
I completely understand the universal love this game has, and why it's so highly praised.
The narrative and structure of the story absolutely blew me away.
The world felt very real and I found myself being heavily emotionally invested in the plot.
The screenshots of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake are so beautiful.
Playing DQ in a different art style is going to be so fun, I'm especially looking forward to combat, as the monsters looks absolutely amazing in HD-2D.
November 14th can't come soon enough.
I'm so ready.
We're fast approaching one of the most important days as a Dragon Quest-fan: DQ Day 2024.
May 27th is the date where we hopefully will get some more info on Dragon Quest III 2DHD.
I've learned not to expect anything at this point, but I can feel the hopium coming back.
Maybe?
With Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake approaching, I wanted to celebrate the original release and how much love was poured in to create the world.
There is so much official art released for Dragon Quest in general, especially 3, like with these small pieces of some of the spells.
It's getting more and clear to me that Dragon Quest VI is the most underappreciated of the series.
It's also a tough spot to be in - following in the footsteps of DQV, one of the most highly praised games in the series.
VI has some very creative ideas and awesome characters.
Final Fantasy 4's narrative focus is doing it so many favors. I can definitely see why it's so loved by many fans. I've gotten genuinely invested in Cecil's and his party members' quest.
I also like the ATB combat-system way more than I thought.
Can't wait to continue the story.
One of my most important personal pointers in terms of what makes a game great to me, is whether or not it evokes real emotion.
Dragon Quest VII 3DS is so severely underappreciated, it's insane.
Few games manages to make me feel actual emotion.
Amazing world and writing.
Before I played the DS-version of Dragon Quest V, I was a little doubtful about the enormous praise the game got.
It couldn't be THAT good.
But it was.
And now several years later, it's still one of my favorite games of the entire franchise.
Zenithian Remake needs to happen.
Seeing some of the areas in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and how they compare to older versions of the game is insanely cool and is one of my favorite things about remakes like this.
Can't wait to return to this game on november 14th.
I can't stress how amazing HD-2D looks.
Jasper & Hendrik' story in DQXI is one of the best sub-plots in all of Dragon Quest in my opinion.
When villains have real, human emotions and insecurities, while also being written well, they instantly become great and memorable.
Jasper is one such antagonist. So awesome.
This is absolutely spot-on.
We see time and time again, that the demand for turn-based games are higher than ever, which is evident in the huge succes of indie games like Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes.
Keep making turn-based games.
We WILL support you and buy your games.
Dear Indie Devs,
Never stop making turn based RPGs. Your hard work and passion for the genre is evident in the amazing adventures you create. We appreciate all that you do.
I can say with confidence that Dragon Quest VIII is the most influential game from my childhood, as it shaped my preference for games.
It made JRPG my favorite genre and it became the standard for what games I wanted.
A lofty standard. One of the best RPGs of all time.
I'm here to share a really niche interest.
One of my favorite things about JRPGs and RPGs in general, are the world maps. I love looking at their layouts, the geography and generally the designs.
Here are the world maps for Dragon Quest I, II, III and IV. DQ's maps are well made.
Yuji Horii wanted to create an RPG inspired by his two favorite RPGs; Wizardry and Ultima, but didn't really know which direction to take the design.
I can't imagine Dragon Quest without Akira Toriyama.
Left is Horii's original slime concept. Right is Toriyama's revamped design.
Apart from the darker tone, Yuji Horii had reported, when Dragon Quest XII was first announced, that the game would feature a completely revamped command-system.
We're also going to see player choices that impact the protagonist's life and will change the world in some way.
Hype.
While playing through Dragon Quest IX, I've really come to appreciate the more sorrowful and dark side of the Dragon Quest narrative even more.
The emotions stories like that evoke does make for greater immersion and attachment to the game.
It makes it so much more memorable.
The more I'm playing Dragon Quest IX, the more I realize just how much it and VII have in common.
I love the storytelling and narrative of travelling around, solving contained issues for denizens of a broken land. It feels very engaging and Dragon Quest-y.
I want more of this.
Getting your ship for the first time is one of the most rewarding experiences in JRPGs, full stop.
In Dragon Quest, it's one of the core mechanics of the franchise, and is the milestone from which the world opens up completely.
Dragon Quest III introduced this to the series.
I still remember the first time playing Dragon Quest XI S when it came out on Switch.
It was that rare feeling of true nostalgia, like a childlike excitement. That is not something we as adults often experience anymore.
But Dragon Quest still manages to capture that emotion.
The Hero-designs in Dragon Quest are awesome. Akira Toriyama absolutely nailed them.
I really like all of them, but Solo from DQIV is maybe my favorite. I've always loved green, and his design overall is just extremely badass.
The long cutlass and dragon ears are just... Cool.
There is a good chance the next Nintendo Direct is being held in february, as per their history.
I think we're due soon for a Dragon Quest III 2D-HD remake release date announcement.
Is it finally time? I seriously hope so, it's been so long since the reveal.
I will forever hold the belief that one of the strongest elements of Dragon Quest is its reward system.
The progression in the game is affected by many forms of gameplay, and exploration has always been a high priority - especially because of Mini Medals.
Goated collectible.
Dragon Quest IV, V and VI are part of one of the best trilogies in JRPG-history, and having them ported to modern systems is something I'm really hoping for, some time in the near future.
It's not likely - not right now at least, but them being more accessbile would be amazing.
After the disastrous statement by that Ubisoft Exec and seeing companies like
@iam8bit
releasing physical copies of games not having them originally, it's making me proud to almost exclusively buy games physically.
I'll NEVER stop supporting physical editions of video games.
It’s finally here. Took their sweet time.
I’ve never touched a Dragon Quest Monsters title so The Dark Prince will be my first.
I can’t wait. Hope to clap some of your teams when the time comes.
Let’s go.
I've been playing Dragon Quest IX since march this year.
Sometimes, just for 20 minutes.
One of the million things I love about Dragon Quest is that the games are often a collection of episodic adventures, strung together by the overall narrative.
I love this game a lot btw.
Unicorn Overlord is shockingly good.
I was prepared to enjoy it a lot, but I wasn't ready for how clean and well designed all the systems and mechanics are.
The gameplay is superb, the visuals are beautiful, and the story is (10 hours in) simple but effective.
Get this game!
Dragon Quest IX is the only mainline DQ-game I've yet to play (apart from X), but I find myself holding out on playing it.
For some reason there is a small part of me that is hopeful about some kind of port or even remake within the next, maybe, 3 years.
What do you think?
Credits for Final Fantasy II.
Very enjoyable.
Creative progression system that gave the option for some truly innovative character customization and agency.
I don't understand the general hate this game seems to get - It was, albeit pretty easy, a fun and rewarding experience.
Dragon Quest is possibly standing in front of the greatest boost in popularity outside of Japan ever. Multible titles, which probably will serve very different roles in the franchise.
A Dragon Quest franchise that spans this wide has potential to become something very special.
Looking for a monster-tamer that has extremely well designed and original monsters created by one of the most legendary character-designers of all time? And one that absolutely deserves and needs Western recognition?
Dragon Quest Monsters might be worth checking out. (Buy it)
Play this game. Dragon Quest need the recognition in the West. It’s worth it, especially if you like monster-tamers.
I haven’t had so much time to play, but it’s one of the best gaming experiences this year. Synthesizing is awesome and can side track you for hours.
I hold the belief that those who's saying that Dragon Quest VII is a bad game, haven't actually played it. Especially not all the way through. It's one of those games with a brutally emtional ending, and has some really well written stories in its episodic narrative.
GOOD game.
Dragon Quest I was released in 1986 and completely changed RPGs forever. The Dragonlord was the franchise's first real villain and would play a huge in defining the antagonists for the entire series.
Akira Toriyama was truly one of the best artists in video game history.
RIP.
Dragon Quest VIII's world map is so good.
I started to pay real attention to world maps when I was playing Golden Sun 2, and since then I've built an enormous love for the world maps of Dragon Quest, and 8 have one of the best in the series.
It's also so gorgeous.
38 years ago today in Japan, Dragon Quest was released for the Famicom.
It was developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix, and was the brainchild of Yuji Horii and Koichi Nakamura.
Dragon Quest is one of the longest running JRPG-series and probably the most legendary.
#DQDay24
I was scanning the monster-list of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, and the amount of monsters we'll be getting to play with is staggering.
The potential for fun and diverse teams is super high.
I made a canvas of all the slimes. Let's make some all-slime teams in
#DQM3
.
Credits for Dragon Quest VIII on 3DS. My favorite PS2 game is now also my favorite 3DS game. I think the best thing about this version is how little it’s been changed.
If you haven’t done so yet, pick this one up and reignite your love for the series. Or just if you like JRPGs.
To think that Dragon Quest's classic command-driven turn-based combat system is still the core-concept it is today that it was back in 1986, is baffling to me.
No other franchise holds so true to their traditions as Dragon Quest does.
So simple, yet so effective and rewarding.
Final Fantasy V's introduction is presenting the more cinematic style that we've come to know Final Fantasy as.
It's evident that Final Fantasy is cementing itself as a series based in strongly written narratives, and I can't wait to experience FF5's plotline and characters.
DRAGON QUEST XII WISHLIST.
#1
) Vocations and deep customization
#2
) A well-written antagonist
#3
) HUGE world-map (in terms of Dragon Quest, the world can't get big enough)
#4
) Side quests
#5
) A system that connects the game to earlier entries.
Would love to see your lists!
I think we can all agree that we each have at least one game that we return to time and time again. A comfort game.
That for me is Dragon Quest XI. It's a game that I, for some reason, is always actively playing.
This franchise has kept getting better each generation.
S-tier.
Actively seeking out a specific type of enemy for the opportunity to encounter a monster that rewards you 10x the exp you'd normally get, is not something I'd necessarily have done in other JRPGs. A masterclass in how to reward the player with something otherwise tedious.
For some reason, the Golem has always been one of my favorite monsters in Dragon Quest.
The fundamental design of all the monsters are very strong, but there is something about the Dragon Quest Golem that's just so awesome. It's so simple, but has a clear identity. Just Golem.
Nintendo Direct in february.
Dragon Quest Day 2024 in may.
I think we're closing in on some more news about Dragon Quest III 2DHD Remake, but the question is if we're also near a potential announcement of the next Nintendo console.
When do you think we'll hear more on DQ III?
When someone as iconic as Toriyama passes, it's extremely painful for his fans, but we must remember to cherish and applaud the art he has created over his career.
Dust off the old cartidges, turn on DB, scroll through his art and remember him as the legendary artist he was.
We are deeply shocked and saddened to share the news of Akira Toriyama’s passing on 1 March 2024.
We extend our deepest condolences for the passing of Mr Toriyama, as well as our heartfelt gratitude and respect for all his great works and achievements throughout his life. He
If there is ever a time to get into Dragon Quest, it is right now. We're on the cusp of the new era of the franchise with the arrival of both Dragon Quest III Remake AND Dragon Quest XII.
It's one of the best games ever made, not to mention one of the best RPGs ever made.
Go.
Dragon Quest VI helped pioneer the "mirror world" gimmick and had a stacked cast of really well-written main characters.
I was really engaged by the mysterious narrative, where we immediately got asked several questions that kept being built on.
Underrated Dragon Quest entry.
If you're a Dragon Quest fan, The Dark Prince is going to double as a huge fan-service for the franchise. As someone who's never played a Dragon Quest Monsters game, I'm so eager to play with monsters and characters from all the previous mainline games - Like many antagonists.
Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince selling 1 million units is a TESTIMENT to the strength and tenacity of the franchise. With the correct support and marketing (in the West), Dragon Quest would become an even larger powerhouse.
I love Dragon Quest. Can’t wait for III 2D-HD.
Returning to Dragon Quest IX after a while, is cementing my love for the franchise.
There is just something in the worlds, the characters, the systems and the combat that Dragon Quest captures, that isn't replicated anywhere else.
I can't wait to see what's next for DQ.
So.
Square Enix has revealed a series of initiatives they're planning for Dragon Quest X, with the added bonus of a new trailer for the Chinese and Korean release for Dragon Quest X Offline...
The West is currently hyping for DQ III and XII.
Is it finally time? Or pure hopium?
Why does the protagonists in Dragon Quest appear silent and without any discernible personality or character-arc?
When Yuji Horii designed the first "Hero" his intend was to create the player-character. Not some cool and charismatic savior of the world. The PLAYER is the hero.
I'm not going to call Bravely Default underrated, but I sincerely believe its visual-style and art direction to be. Severely.
Bravely Default is an homage to the traditional JRPG, like Dragon Quest, and has some serious banger tracks in its OST.
Hoping for a third entry soon!
Dragon Quest 3 2DHD Remake will be a multiplatform release.
I sincerely hope this will be the start of a larger focus on the franchise's Western audience, which has so much untapped potential.
I'm beyond hyped for Dragon Quest's future - even with all the looming uncertainties.
Conventional design is important for the longevity of a system. In the case of Dragon Quest's spells, they've been treated the same way as the characters, and even the monsters.
This makes them iconic and well designed.
What's your favorite Dragon Quest spell?
Mine's Kaboom.
Dragon Quest as a franchise is always shrouded in mystery and its announcements are usually either grandiose or sneaked in.
What I want more than anything at this point, is for Dragon Quest III 2D-HD remake to get announced at the next Nintendo Direct and released on DQ Day '24
One thing that I will always treasure Dragon Quest for is how magical it feels to start up a new save file. The beginning of a new adventure is an emotion, and not one that is easily captured by many games.
Dragon Quest 9 is my final game (apart from 10) to play in the series.
Dragon Quest XI is a beautiful game, and I really love the art style and its evolution throughout the series' timeline. But there is something so special about the low-res 64-bit 3D chibi visuals that Dragon Quest IX (and many other JRPGs on the Nintendo DS) had.
Am I alone?
I can't wait for the critic-reviews to roll in at 70/100, with them having played the first 8 hours only, thinking it's representative of the entire game.
Seeing the user-score this high is making me happy to be part of the Dragon Quest-community.
This game is so awesome.
Oops.
I accidentally finished my 3rd playthrough of Dragon Quest IV, when I actually were in the middle of other projects.
But that's the appeal of Dragon Quest. It completely sucks you in and transports you to another world.
Oh well.
DQV needs a 3rd playthrough aswell...
Happy 19th birthday to Dragon Quest VIII.
It was one of the largest JRPG releases we've seen in the West in terms of impact, as it succesfully translated the success of the Japanese market onto the Western.
Such an impressive PS2 game that still holds up 100% today.
Playing FFIII feels like a culmination of what the 80s taught us about RPGs and gives a beginning akin to how a fantastical TV series would start.
So much content and pieces of gameplay-loops fills the first couple of hours.
I can't wait to see how the game shapes up.
Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince has sold roughly 350.000 physical copies in Japan alone - at launch.
The fact that the franchise is stronger than ever in Japan should be a glowing sign to Square Enix that they NEED to look at the demand for Dragon Quest globally.
Come on.
Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince is the 5th best selling Switch game on the Japanese Nintendo Switch E-shop in 2023.
This speaks VOLUME as to the intense popularity of the franchise in Japan, and also to the enormous potential, globally.
Square Enix, it's time. We're ready.
Dragon Quest IX is such a special experience as a fan of the franchise.
The sheer contrast it immediately creates to the other games in the series is very interesting, and gives Dragon Quest another dimension in terms of what makes a Dragon Quest game.
One of the best entries.
Final Fantasy VI is highly regarded, and is often put on the very top of lists about the best JRPGs of all time.
I just booted it up for the first time, and I seriously can't wait to get started.
I'm a huge sucker for the steampunk aesthetic aswell, so my expectations are high.
Us in Europe have always been a little side-stepped when it came to the earlier releases of Dragon Quest, but Dragon Quest I, II and III on GBC are probably the ones I regret not being able to get in my childhood the most.
I love JRPGs on handheld consoles. They fit perfectly.
At this point, the Dragon Quest development team needs all the time they can get. Between Toriyama's passing and the large restructuring internally at Square Enix, I'm sure the team is under a great deal of stress, also because of the enormous expectations for DQ XII. I'm hopeful
Bloomberg is reporting that Yu Miyake, the Producer of the Dragon Quest series is stepping down.
Due to delays in development of Dragon Quest XII a change is being made.
I can't believe it's under 24 hours now.
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince releases tomorrow on december 1st 2023.
The wait has been long, but we can finally begin wrangling and building our thematic, competitive and diverse monster-teams in the weekend.
Hold.
Hoooold.
Even in his most simple concept sketches for different spells or scenes, Akira Toriyama does truly show his style is so core to the Dragon Quest franchise.
There is something so special about the charming lightheartedness, but with the capacity for a darker and menacing tone.
Dragon Quest's monsters are so well designed, that when a new monster gets introduced in a game, it could just as well be from the previous Dragon Quest games.
One of these is The Dark Prince's Vegandragora.
I'm floored by how good ALL the monster-designs in Dragon Quest are.
Metal Slime-hunting will always be thrilling. It makes grinding feel extremely rewarding when it pays off. This scenario freaks me out, though. I just know everyone except one flees the moment the turn starts.
Another overlooked aspect of Dragon Quest is the weapon designs. As the games continue to improve visually, we can really see the care and attention to detail that has gone into designing the weapons. It gives them another element of value than just extra stats. They're so cool.
Absolutely blown away by the amount of content that Final Fantasy l has. Especially when comparing it to its peers and the time. It's truly a testiment to the extreme amount of teachings developers in the industry gained during this time.
FF1 is a great game.
On to ll.
