Delighted that the very talented
@MrGoodwin23
has taken the time to produce this lovely one-pager.
It summarises
#GrowingGreatTeachers
; a replacement for performance management that has professional growth and teacher well-being at its very heart.
#ImproveNotProve
The only reason that our education system is not imploding is because of our brilliant school staff.
Not the govt.
Not the DfE.
It's only functioning because of the amazing people who work in our schools and colleges.
Sending strength to every single one of you.
My beautiful and amazing wife, Melanie, retires from teaching today. 35 years in the same primary school.
She has taught all ages and, in more recent years, looked after the most vulnerable children.
Iโm so proud of her and everything sheโs achieved in her career
#Legacy
I know schools will be providing work during this time but what an opportunity for children to engage in stuff like learning to cook, how to use a washing machine, iron, decorate, planning meals, financial planning...
Now is the time for them to develop the habit of reading too
Schools closed my arse. 50%+ attendance in many schools. Some parents are absolutely taking the piss. This is unsustainable and ultimately going to make no difference to the advance of COVID-19
Received some heartbreaking news yesterday. My mum has passed away. I thank everyone who sent best wishes when she was admitted to hospital. During this time I couldnโt visit her. Your support was so appreciated as it gave me great strength. Bless you and God bless my mum x
Headteachers. Bloody marvellous people. For all those who choose to have a pop at them- step up to the plate yourself. Itโs a right tough job
#respect
Delighted to announce that the wonderful heads of my MAT have agreed to pursue a professional growth policy at the expense of a performance management one.
A policy driven by the individual; one that has purpose and autonomy and no data targets. Bespoke and impactful. Marvellous
Apologies for not being around and responding to tweets but I find myself in a very sad situation. My mum has had a significant stroke and is in hospital. Iโm not allowed to visit her. This is heartbreaking. She may not know whatโs happened but I just want to be there yet canโt.
Close to finishing writing a performance management policy. Rewritten and reimagined.
No data targets
No RAG rating
No targets
All about professional growth - purpose, autonomy and mastery.
Two reasons to be in education:
1. You change lives
2. August
Happy hols to all the amazing teachers I have had the privilege of working with this year and also to all of those I havenโt.
Play nice x
Outstanding. No more please.
Outstanding school.
Outstanding lesson.
Outstanding teacher.
Outstanding teacher program.
Just stop it please. It's meaningless rubbish.
British media:
Schools are NOT closed.
Also, a school is more than just a building. Its work goes on whether the doors are shut or not. Safeguarding, home liaison, remote learning, phone calls home..
Teachers are very trustworthy professionals.
The children matter to them.
PowerPoint is killing secondary school teaching.
Over-reliance on it at KS345 is leading to:
Poor delivery;
Lazy teaching;
An insufficient grasp of subject knowledge;
Unresponsive teaching.
Itโs PowerPoint presentation not PowerPoint scheme of work.
A great tool used poorly
My wonderful teacher colleagues...
That's August finished for another year so it is now time to do what you do best - change some lives.
Best wishes to every single one of you for 2018-19.
I have thought about being a head many times but have never been brave enough. To all those who have taken up the challenge I salute you. To any critics or detractors.. shut up or step up to the plate.
Thousands of teachers could be stopped from quitting each year if schools spent an extra ยฃ500 per person on high-quality CPD, says

PE teachers.
In your lessons do you..
Revisit previous learning?
Present new skills in steps?
Ask questions?
Model skills?
Guide practice?
Check understanding?
Ensure success?
Support difficult skills?
Get kids to work independently?
Thought so.
As you were & have been ๐
Lesson Observations.
Not sure why people use WWW EBI. It provides an unhelpful mixed message.
Also, for me, it also usually means:
WWW: The bits most like my teaching
EBI: The bits you need to do to make it more like my teaching
Stop it please
Rather than planning how to prepare teachers to better cope with the job and how they may look after themselves better, can we just not look at our policies and the conditions in which they work a bit more?
Best wishes to every member of school staff for the last week of term. A tough term during which my admiration for you all has continued to grow unabated.
See you on the other side. X
An absolute car crash tonight. A complete lack of clarity and direction. Currently I am so embarrassed to be British. The leadership of this great country is an unparalleled joke.
A massive focus on curriculum now it seems. Did people never really consider this before? I'm seeing grand visual maps too. The audience? Deep dives. Never been asked these questions before? Fascinated by this latest frenzy. Concerned too especially around workload.
โWeโll be doing a whole load a catch up over the summer and Gavin Williamson will announce next week more details of the catch-up programmeโ, says PM

#schoolreopeninguk
When I was at school doing O levels I received no revision or booster classes, no pre exam breakfast, no reassuring postcards, no motivational speeches, no walking talking mocks...
Maybe we were...
more resilient?
Less cared about?
Better prepared?
doing exams easier than GCSEs?
Delighted to announce that from next September I will be, on a part time basis, Head of Staff Development for a Somerset MAT. I will continue to undertake my consultancy work alongside this role. Exciting times!
Four out of 10 teachers plan to quit. If you are a school leader what are you doing about this? In my MAT we have removed PM, gave everyone the 3.5% pay rise and allow staff to apply for UPR after 2 years. More to do but a good start.
I think retention is more important than recruitment bearing in mind that if you want to get high-quality teachers then you need to stick with them. Expertise is a result of experience and practice
To all the amazing folk returning tomorrow..
I hope you are refreshed, happy and looking forward to what I'm sure will be an amazing 2018.
Remember...as teachers you change lives. Hang on to that thought in those dark moments.
For those not returning 'til next week..bastards
As part of my teacher feedback project in one of my trust schools staff display their professional growth focus requesting how they like to receive feedback too.
Don't get me wrong, I like Principles of Instruction & have shared this doc for the last 6 years. However the constant reference to 'Rosenshine's Principles' is starting to grind. Use it to inform your practice but don't make it solely your practice. It'll be RPOI checklists next
In Sept 2019 my Trust removes Performance Management and replaces it with Professional Growth. Thank you for all the feedback so far.

The details of how are here:
Empathise with this completely. I didnโt travel the 80 miles to see my mum when she was poorly as I wasnโt allowed to go or visit. I did get to her funeral however. The man is a joke, as are all the current govt.
Hey, Dominic Cummings, I havenโt driven the 120 miles to see my Mum in 8 weeks, to even sit in her garden and have a cup of tea with her. I will be driving down next week for her funeral. Iโm guessing youโll get to see your mum again though.
#DominicCummingsMustGo
There has been an unprecedented interest in my trust's intended approach to performance management. Thank you. PM will go and be replaced with 'professional growth'. I intend to post the policy in January after the staff and unions have had it presented to them.
No high stakes observations
No data targets
UPR possible after 2 yrs
Automatic pay rise
No performance management
Instead professional growth

Over-thinking teaching seems to be sometimes leading to over-complicating teaching which in turn seems to be leading to clutter, noise and lethal mutations of some good ideas.
Managed at the end of a fairly traumatic week to visit one of mine and mumโs favourite places. Evening Hill in my hometown; Poole. Onwards and upwards my friends.
The private sector in this country has shown such leadership, ingenuity & willingness to adapt & work hard to stay afloat - against all the odds.
If our state schools had shown an ounce of the same backbone through the pandemic, no child would have been left behind.
Pathetic.
