Last month my caretaker fell ill. I was moving from hospital to house, cooking, bringing food and running other errands for 4 days. This week I fell ill, she didn’t pay me a visit. These things don’t work like that, just be kind and leave it.

My father is a retired generator engineer (heavy duty gen, listers). He worked for companies like BenJack, Chellarams and others. He wasn’t a full time staff but they had their contract which was smooth. I didn’t know how his job was until I was old enough to understand it.

This was the first time I experienced a negative change in governance and a shift in the economy. Oh, I forgot to add that school fees increased as well. I used to tell people “my mom is a civil servant” with a smile on my face but not after 2009.

University of Science and Technology and the school standard then was as soon as school resumes, all students who haven’t paid their fees would be sent home. I was never sent home. I always paid my fees before resumption. If my dad didn’t have at the moment, my mom will fix it.

If a company’s generator is bad, he would make quotations and submit to the company, then the company will approve if they agree to pay the price to fix their gen. My dad will use his money to buy the parts, fix the gen and when he’s done, the company pays him for his services.

He asked me if my mom is working, I said yes. He asked what she does for a living, I told him she’s a civil servant. He said no wonder, he then told me that civil servants haven’t been paid. But as a teacher, he couldn’t do much so I had to go home.

Until 2009 I was sent home because of non payment of school fees. My dad was on a job but my mom couldn’t pay the fees. I was walking home when a teacher asked me what happened Vivian, why didn’t your daddy pay your school fees early? I told him my dad didn’t have money.
