Tomorrow is the anniversary (August 11, 2011) of the infamous near prompt critical hands on demonstration / photo op by Los Alamos with plutonium rods.
Damascus, Arkansas, U.S.A
September 18-19, 1980
During routine maintenance operations, an airman dropped a 6-inch (8-Ibs) socket wrench. The socket punctures the side of the Titan missile. Liquid fuel from missile ignites and explodes, throwing ~9MT warhead out of silo.
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory employee opening world's heaviest hinged door, was 8 feet thick, nearly 12 feet wide, weighed 97,000 lbs. Special bearing in hinge allowed single person to open concrete-filled door, was used to shield Rotating Target Neutron Source-II

That relative humidity sensor reading canโt be right? 1% RH ??
What does this say about quality control at the B21 plant?
Am I missing something here?

Note: this will be a long thread but found some amazing photos of this event and clean up operation. Sit back and enjoy

Rocket science is hard:
A D-5 Trident II missile spins out of control after being launched from the nuclear-powered strategic missile submarine USS TENNESSEE (SSBN-734)
Potassium dihydrogen (KDP) crystal, weighting almost 800 pounds.
The crystal was produced for the National Ignition Facility through a newly developed rapid-growth process that only takes months, as opposed to two years using conventional methods!
Always kind of freaks me out seeing so many bolts werenโt put in place on Gadget. Can just imagine polar end cap coming loose or falling off and the explosive lens and plutonium core falling out while gadget was being hoisted to the top of tower.... try explaining that to Groves.
Early ICBM warhead radar decoy, an inflatable Mylar balloon replicating MK 4 RV. The decoy was deployed in space, and ultimately burned up on re-entry, presumably after confounding ground-based ABM radars trying to sort real warheads from decoys.

Plutonium part being created with the dry-machining process developed at Los Alamos.
Because plutonium is a pyrophoric material, the oxygen level is usually kept below 0.2% by filling the glovebox with nitroยญ gen or an inert gas like argon
Dry process no lubricants so less waste!
TOUCHDOWNย โย The Mk21 Fuze Reentry Vehicle performed through its planned trajectory, reaching its splash point at the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site at Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
Erie nuclear test was conducted by the Los Alamos Lab in 1956 at Enewetak Atoll. 14.9 kilotons fireball consumed 300-foot tower and guy wires

Operation Hardtack Orange Event: toroidal yellow or orange colored fireball and white-blue- green-purple air radiation induced glow photographed from the deck of a U.S. aircraft carrier at 1 minute after burst, 12 August 1958. High Altitude Nuclear Test
Amazing and terrifying effects of 19-kiloton Whitney shot, Operation Plumbbob, Sept 23, 1957, Nevada Test Site. X-rays generated by detonation strip electrons off atoms in air. Electrons then rejoin atoms, producing a flash of electrical discharge that creates the feathery light!
Wow! The Oppenheimer movie was much better than I expected!
Acting was absolutely superb! Cillian Murphy especially exceeded my expectations in his portrayal of Oppenheimer. Hell he even sounded like Oppenheimer. There are of course a few minor deviations from historical facts 1/
Artist concept of Soviet sub base.
Reminds me of hardly mentioned W86 research of not only earth penetrating nuclear war heads but also ice penetrating warheads for targeting submarines patrolling under Arctic ice sheets!
Always amazed at the actual relatively small size of the plutonium core to the Fatman nuclear weapon! Note that capsule looking unit strapped to the box has the plutonium core inside it. Added a rough diagram I drew a few years back as a reference.
Wow! Interesting safety enhancement recommendations for early nuclear weapons was a radioactive key & lock mechanism!
โTo force special handling, the key might well be loaded with Cobalt 60 or some similar radioactive materialโฆโ
