Saw a new woodpecker species today. Northern flicker I think? I also finally saw the pileated woodpecker I’ve been hearing the last month. A great day of birding!!

Luna Moth (Actias luna) in my front yard. I was smiling ear to ear for about an hour afterwards still. Just pure magic to be so close to this animal. And special it came so soon after my other moth encounter. ✨⭐️

This morning I sat and finally made my Birds of 2022 "seen on the farm list" I've got 41 different species! My first year birding has been so rewarding and I can't wait to keep creating habitat for them here. In 2023 I want to see the darn owl I've been hearing all season!!

My engagement photos came back & we recreated our proposal where Jacob tricked me into looking at a "rare bird" and then I proceeded to ID it as a Starling and talk at length about it being invasive but beautiful for so long he got tired on his knee"I thought you'd never stop" 🥰

We traveled to 100% totality yesterday for my husband's birthday and had a beautiful day in nature. Not a cloud in the sky, spring ephemerals blooming, found morels, and then witnessed darkness and light dancing. Carolina chickadee lifer as a bonus!! 🌛🩶

@Jess_inthewild Our farm has zero cats I have populated it with but because of my neighbors farm who has barn cats with multiple litters a year, they come onto my farm. As an new birder this pisses me off!!! If you want them in your barn 1. that is lame but 2. at least spay them!!!!!

TWO YEARS to find an owl on the farm but I finally saw one! I hear barred owls frequently so I assumed it was that, but my husband thought maybe a barn owl? this is the only photo I got before farm equipment noise scarred it. I'm so excited to have seen it. Lifer beer for me! 😊

Absolutely nuts on the farm this evening with birds!! I took my usual walk and saw so many new faces!. At one point the unidentified "yellow" flock, an eastern blue bird group of 4, and a pair of northern flickers were all on one tree. I just sat an watched for awhile.😊

Been going through it recently as the farm has been overwhelming and stressful. Anyways! I was reminded of my path when a small moth paid me a visit and clung to my finger in the wind. I took it as delicate sign to hang on, ask for help, and seek comfort in nature. 🖤

Visited my friend in Tahoe for the last week. I learned how to ski and saw some amazing lifers. Mountain Chickadee, Acorn Woodpecker, Common Merganser, and Clark's nutcracker. 😊

I walked with a state conservation biologist this afternoon and showed her the ephemeral blooms on the farm. I suspected they were incredible but was confirmed by her that we have a population of Dutchman's breeches she's never seen the likes of. We looked for bumble bees...

@jessicakeogh She'll rejoin our other 30 ewes in the flock when she's strong enough. Her grandmother is actually up there which is pretty neat!! Also when they are hand raised for a bit they are great at leading the other sheep to new grazing areas which is what my other bottle babies do.

who would be using Dutchman's breeches as an early source of nectar and found at least five examples. I walk those woods at 3x a week and today I was able to show secret spots only I know. It was pure magic. I hope I can conserve this part of the farm for years to come!

We went to Guanacaste, Costa Rica for our honey moon earlier this month. I racked up 47 new species while there!! 😊I managed to get some photos of the birds that stood still long enough for my P530 coolpix lol Spotted Sandpiper, Tricolored Heron! Can't wait to share more.

I am leaving for a trip tonight and was hoping our mega blood root (Sanguinaria canadensis ) patch would bloom before I left, thankfully nature was on my side!! Gorgeous. I wait for this patch every spring.

Very sad to see probably 100 trees taken down on my normal birdwalk. Seems like every year the edge of the woods gets taken farther to widen a corn field border that's already 20+ ft. Some beautiful mature oaks and hackberry. My heart hurts for the habitat loss.

I went for a bird walk WITH friends today! A first for me and I had an absolute blast.Kate and Bryce brought all the good bird vibes. We saw a pileated woodpecker in flight, heard another ones call, saw two other species of woodpeckers, and countless new mushrooms. Great day!☺️

Gorgeous walk this morning. Second time seeing Ruby-crowned Kinglets. They flit around like tiny leaves falling from the trees. I think their call has so much character for how small they are. Definitely a new farm favorite. Now to get a photo!!

I have been hearing a great horned owl in the evenings recently and was sure I spotted his “horns” from afar in a tree. I walked slowly to get a better look/snap a photo until I realized it was this little imposters ears! He was so high up in the tree I couldn’t believe it. 😂

I gifted a community member a painting of a woodpecker I did for his wife. Today she texted me asking if I could recreate it for her because she “accidentally recycled it” I would have loved to keep that painting myself. Just absolutely bummed out.
