From a DfT press release: “Taxpayers contributed £1000 per household to protect train drivers’ jobs during the pandemic.” And I thought it was to keep the railway running so that essential workers could get to their jobs, and freight trains could still run.

Chiltern is saying please don't travel because we are going to be so busy with the Nuneham Viaduct closure. If we had a proper Integrated railway, extra rolling stock would have been brought in and max length trains would be running a max frequency Oxford Shuttle service.

According to Shapps the £16bn support for the railway was all about protecting railway workers jobs at a cost of £160,000 per head. Nothing to do with keeping vital rail services running for essential workers then?

In a DfT press release Grayling says thousands of new trains are being introduced. Listen carefully Minister , a single passenger coach is a vehicle. If you join several vehicles together they become a train. These highly technical terms are not interchangeable.

A thought for our troubled times. In 1992, when British Rail was battling the recession and under pressure to cut costs, Intercity Director John Prideaux told @Modern_Railways "cutting 10% of train miles cuts 10% of revenue but nothing like that percentage of costs".

Rough estimate. If all the lineside vegetation between King's Cross and Finsbury Park was turned into biomass, it would provide enough sustainable diesel fuel to power a Deltic+8 from London to Leeds.

Just had a press release promoting Trains Top Trumps as a Christmas stocking filler. Tempted to produce a spoof Trains Anti Trumps for the current UK new train fleet. Negative ratings to include seat hardness, vulnerability to metal fatigue, late delivery, NO2 in pax compartment.
