‘Cur?’ means ‘why?’ in Latin. As I was dropping off to sleep last night it occurred to me that *obviously* ‘curiosity’ must come from ‘cur’, ‘why-ish-ness’. Imagine my disappointment when all the dictionaries say ‘curiosus’ is from ‘cura’ & to do with taking care of stuff. Why???

Chester Roman amphitheater is amazing. Originally built c80ad, it was probably the biggest and most elaborate in Britain and until yesterday I had no idea it existed.

@JoannaCannon The Children of Green Knowe by Lucy Boston - in fact, pretty much all her books. You can visit the house at Hemingford Grey and it is so well worth it - the oldest continuously inhabited house in the country. So much history and so many stories.

I know my limits. I am encased in 5mm rubber all over, wetsuit, boots and gloves, plus 2 swimming hats. I still only stayed in for about 3 minutes as I felt like my face was getting frostbite. -4 air temp and 2.7c in the water. Take care out there, folks! @JesusGreenLido 💕🏊‍♀️❄️🥰

Introducing my excessively homemade Christmas wreath! Made from holly and ivy from my gdn (the only things which thrive there) and bits of ribbon magpied over the year. It may not be much, but it’s the first Christmassy thing I’ve achieved this year, aside from brandy butter.

Cambridge folks, the cafe kiosk on Jesus Green has reopened this morning under new management. It has proper coffee and real cakes including vegan and gf options and looks really attractive. Ice creams will be available too ☕️ 🍦 🧁

My boy and I spent some time sitting by the river with our sketchbooks yesterday afternoon when the sun was lowering. He talked about how drawing water is hard and I took this picture to show him that you have to look for shapes and colours rather than think of it as water.

I went for a pre dawn swim in the lido. It was magnificent, in spite of kit failure - fixing goggles in 0c with neoprene gloves was never going to work, but grateful to the life guards who tried and fetched the lost property so I could use a spare set 😊 🏊‍♀️ 🏊‍♀️ @JesusGreenLido

I’ve been 🏊‍♀️🏊‍♀️ fairly regularly @JesusGreenLido for 9+ years and it’s always been a haven and a joy, but it’s in the past year of swimming thro 2 winters that I’ve made marvellous new friends. I’m so grateful for all its many and varied healing and healthsome properties🥰🏊‍♀️❄️🎄💕
