We had a staff member die from COVID at our school, and our district just scaled back on COVID regulations. They hate us. My district hates us. If I could make the same salary elsewhere, I’d be gone. If I didn’t have the relationships with two of my families, I’d be GONE.

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts re: teachers dressing “professionally” or being rewarded with Jeans Days. Today I wore sneakers & leggings. I have tattoos, & 2 nose rings. None of these things negatively impact my ability to teach my students.

So, we’ll be doing distance learning for the next week & half, but staff are required to report to buildings…to teach via Google Meet. I’m RELIEVED that my students won’t be at risk for a time, but the fact that we as adults can’t be trusted to WFH in a pandemic is an insult.

Just saw a video where a HS teacher was sharing a get-to-know-you activity. She said, “I made the questions class specific, like my honors students will definitely have a favorite book, so I asked them that, but my non-honors students won’t so I didn’t ask.” I didn’t like that.

No amount of drills that can prepare you for the emotions of an actual lockdown. Everyone is safe, no one was harmed, and my class did great. But I’m still feeling so dysregulated, and I have to stay present for my students. This day could not end soon enough.

Last week, I tweeted that I was at the end of my rope - my mental health was at an all-time low. With the encouragement of others, I spoke to my admin, and have applied for FMLA. I met with my psychiatrist, who approved me for 2 days a month; I will take every other Friday off. +

Weekend work is really about the lesser of two evils: exhaustion or anxiety. And eventually I’ll have an arsenal of stuff to pull from, but this is only my 3rd year, so I’m still creating a lot from the ground up. I do hate that I’m adding to unrealistic expectations though.

MASSIVE MILESTONES WERE REACHED TODAY!! I hiked for the first time ever, more than halfway up Piestewa Peak. I pushed myself way farther than I thought I could go. I also prioritized comfort over self-consciousness and took off my sweatshirt. Today has been a HUGE day.

A teacher I used to work with, just posted that #DaunteWright was in her first class. During protests last summer, she had a poster that said “I don’t want one of my students to be the hashtag” and that’s exactly what happened. We deserve more than hashtags.

So I’m in my first Zoom session for my Ed.S. program, & I’m the only non-white person. I’m not surprised, but I am bummed - my 3 year masters program was the same experience. My mom said I’m in the right place, because our state needs Black admin. But man, this is isolating.

I just withdrew from my 2nd term grad course. Between COVID, my car, nursing an infected bite from a student, and my nana almost dying I got SO behind and even with extensions I wouldn’t have caught up. It feels like I failed, but I know I just need a fresh start in the spring.

I’m really glad I took today off from school. I feel calmer, and less self-destructive. I pretty much slept or played games on my iPad all day. I still don’t want to go to school tomorrow, because I know nothing has changed, but at least I can approach it with a clearer head.

@linnealu22 @javeigh It’s crazy, until I was medicated, I didn’t know (or remember) what it felt like to be simply /sad/. The first time I felt sad after being on meds for a few months, but with no other depression symptoms, I cried because I felt “normal” 😅

Working in K-12 education is incredibly hard. There are consecutive days, weeks even, where it feels totally unsustainable. But if you find yourself incessantly complaining about your students, maybe you should reconsider this field.

Amidst the dumpster fire that is *gestures broadly* I somehow managed to find a human who makes the rest of the world go quiet, looks at me like I’m magic, & gives me a sense of safety I didn’t even know what possible. No clue what the future holds, but right now, I’m so happy.

I just want to point out all of the educators who have never needed a WEAPON or HANDCUFFS when working with an escalated student. I’ve **literally** never been in a situation and thought “wow I wish I could subdue this student with XYZ”

It’s almost 6pm, I’ve slept ALL day, and I still feel totally empty. I try not to complain w/o action, so I just made a psychiatrist appt for Tue, and I still have my GP appt scheduled Fri. I can’t keep going with my brain the way it is. If you pray, put me on your list please.

Making myself a 12-month advent calendar, as a way to both reward myself for staying alive and also curb my frivolous spending. Each month I’ll pull one of these (out of a box or something idk) and do/get it. I need 5 more things!! Any ideas??

One of my oldest friends (our moms were pregnant with us together at church!) got MARRIED yesterday and the joy I captured here 😍😍😍 I just had to share because I LOVE LOVE!!!
