The targeting of civilians, whether by Hamas or the Israeli government, is an unequivocal war crime. The Israeli government's ongoing indiscriminate attacks, bombing even hospitals in Gaza, home to 2.3 million, worsens the discriminatory system of the oppressive apartheid regime

First, women helped sustain the rebellion through gendered mechanisms, such as increasing the organization’s capacity to adapt tactics to changing circumstances, reinforcing the leadership's authority by leading the coup-proofing strategies, and building int'l coalitions. (4/7)

Even more tragic considering how Iraq and Afghanistan wars started in the first place.
Gender inequality lies at the heart of these issues. Recognizing the detriments of gender inequality on collective security should prompt policymakers to prioritize gender-equal policies and address the underlying causes that lead women to participate in conflict.

Take away 2: We tend to link gender-equal attitudes to nonviolence. However, violent organizations can attract support by catering to the public’s gender-equal attitudes. We should consider the complex relationship between gender equality norms and political violence. (7/7)

Take away 1: Gender inequalities can increase the survivability of groups with women insurgents. Deprivation of women’s rights constitutes a security issue for which the communities pay collective costs. (6/7)
"The UN has backed a resolution on combatting rape in conflict but excluded references in the text to sexual and reproductive health, after vehement opposition from the US."

I explore how gender inequality underpins various aspects of conflict dynamics. These include: 1)women’s contributions to armed groups, including prolonging conflict; 2) women’s exclusion from post-conflict rehabilitation programs;
3)limited visibility of women's human rights violations and underrepresentation of male civilians as victims in conflict; 4)foreign powers “saving vulnerable women” rhetoric as a justification for involvement in conflict settings.

Second, I assess the conditions shaping the effectiveness of women’s duties for sustained rebellion: 1) Women insurgents’ effectiveness increases due to the prevalence of gender inequalities. 2) Women provide the most advantages in times of organizational crises. (5/7)
