Feeling very honoured this International Women’s Day to be included in the Women in Westminster: The 100 list, alongside Government Ministers, political journalists and campaigners and a number of my personal political heroines.
Thanks to

Found a dead fox in our garden today. We slightly freaked out, googled what to do and finally mustered the courage to go out and bag it up for collection.
It wasn’t dead, it was staring at us, having just woken up from its nap.

Here’s me graduating from a quintessentially British university. I’m guessing that the writer might look at my graduation photo and think I’m British, but I’m actually one of those awful immigrants who stole a slot that could have gone to a British student.
Sunset today is at 4:30pm. As a woman, this means no chance of going for a run after work for the next few months, which is quite a depressing thought.
It’s taken me eighteen months, but have finally finished the Italian course on
@duolingo
. Building a little habit each day has been brilliant during the pandemic. Sono molto felice e non vedo l’ora di visitare Italia per metterlo in pratica!
Just switched on to the end of Nadiya’s Family Favourites. It is literally impossible to be in a bad mood while watching
@BegumNadiya
. She should probably be prescribed on the NHS.
Horrified that my GP surgery in Walthamstow has just sent all patients a text saying they’re closing early tomorrow because of the threat of disturbance outside our local immigration centre.
We don’t need fascists in east London, thanks very much.
Incredible that it has taken 170 years for the population of Ireland to reach the levels just after the Famine, when a million people had died and another million had emigrated. It shows how long a tail a major historical catastrophe like that can have.
The population of Ireland (the Republic) has surpassed 5 million for the first time since 1851.
It still has some way to go until it reaches its peak level of 1841, before the Great Hunger caused a dramatic decline that did not begin to reverse until 1961
British friends! Want to celebrate the likely repeal of the 8th in Ireland? Send a few quid to
@AbortionSupport
, who will continue to help Northern Irish women travel for abortions, even if southern Irish women don’t have to.
@howardsimpson_
Don't do this. Protest against Rees-Mogg, absolutely, but doing it outside his house brings his family into it. It's unfair and it'll annoy lots of people on the same side.
Really worth watching
@cathynewman
’s interview with
@RuthDavidsonPC
on
@Channel4News
this evening. The strength of feeling she expressed on importance of maintaining integrity of and trust in institutions is something that a lot of people across political divides will share.
@NeilDotObrien
This is a highly-regarded internship to help young people from BAME backgrounds get started in careers in comms, which as an industry isn’t as diverse as it needs to be. It’s a very good thing.
@mikeysmith
When I worked in financial inclusion, there was a long list of types of ID that banks could accept if someone didn’t have a passport or driving licence, but very low awareness meant these were often rejected. Seems to be a clumsy solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.
@OwenJones84
As an Irish person, I’m genuinely shocked at how often people here in the UK seem to conflate the UK, GB and England. Wales and Scotland often treated as less important, Northern Ireland disregarded altogether.
Wes Streeting on 🔥🔥🔥 today. These idiots who conflate opposing Israel’s policy towards Palestine and bashing Jewish people actively harm the campaign for Palestinian freedom.
It’s about time people like you bothered to look at my record. I’ve been to Palestine three times and have regularly raised my opposition to illegal settlement expansion, demolitions etc. It’s possible to do all this without being racist. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Rewatched Children of Men tonight for the first time in ages after reading this brilliant
@NewStatesman
article about why it’s a film for our times. Had forgotten how incredibly visceral it is. Not a frame wasted.
Really strong words here from Jonathan Powell on how the PM’s policies are threatening peace in Northern Ireland. With Assembly elections coming up in May, this is a very important year for the North.
@OwenJones84
Absolutely! Greta is a teenage girl trying to change the world - we need more like her, not people trying to tear her down. (Plus it’s just a bit stupid.)
Just out of my second viewing of An Cailín Ciúin (
@quietgirlfilm
) at
@CurzonBbury
. Really benefits from repeat watches, and still incredible to walk into a UK cinema and watch an Irish-language film.
Incidents of electoral fraud in the UK are extremely low, and Electoral Commission figures confirm this. This is voter suppression. It will make it harder for younger people and people on lower incomes to vote, and it’s very wrong.
Photo identification will need to be presented to collect your ballot paper at polling stations from 4 May 2023.
This is to protect your vote, and to prevent it being used without your knowledge.
My hero of the day is
@DawnHFoster
for keeping her composure while sitting beside Melanie Phillips saying deeply disturbing things about Islamophobia on
#sundaypolitics
.
@SophyRidgeSky
I think this is a real concern for a lot of women as it opens up the potential for unwanted contact and harassment. You’re definitely not being oversensitive.
So much admiration for
@Nataliefleet
speaking out about her experience to raise awareness of the level of rape and violence against women and girls on Newsnight this evening.
This is excellent communications from
@LNER
- sincere and appropriate. Worth reminding people of the
@samaritans
and railway Small Talk Saves Lives campaign.
We are sorry for the disruption today. The missed meetings, people who were late home, and had to sit on the floor because of cancelled services.
Someone didn’t return home to their family today, which puts everything into perspective.
Always be kind it costs nothing ❤️
What happened to Zara Alena, a woman with her life ahead of her, could have happened to any of us. Huge respect for the strength of her family in their fight for justice. We need more action to stamp out misogynistic violence.
The strength and resolve of Zara Aleena's family has been remarkable, as today, another violent man is sentenced for the horrific murder of another innocent woman.
Women deserve and have the right to be safe. Our city, country and society must change.
As an Irish person in Britain, I’ve found myself consciously switching from the ‘lads’ that I’d instinctively use as a gender-neutral word, to ‘folks’ instead.
In Hiberno-English, the plural form "lads" is non-gender-specific, like "ils" in French.
Sometimes plural vs singular forms add valuable context as well as just indicating numbers: the way "I have to wash my hand" sounds worse than "I have to wash my hands", for example.
So pleased that the brilliant
@KarenPBuckMP
will be
@SadiqKhan
's campaign chair. No better woman to lead the fight. Expecting to see lots of housing and transport pledges!
Have started waving at people I pass while out running. 90% of people completely ignore it in an appropriately unfriendly London fashion, but am starting to get the occasional smile and wave back. East Londoners, I will wear you down eventually.
Folks, I am in one final queue for my flight at the gate. Queueing is my life now. It is all I know. I have forgotten who I was before I joined the queue. The queue is everlasting.
#dublinairport
Very powerful article in this week’s
@GraziaUK
from Richard, husband of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, on the continuing struggle to bring her home. She has now been in prison, held arbitrarily, for 1,294 day.
#FreeNazanin
@IanDunt
Yes, absolutely. We went on a walk yesterday to our local sports ground - maybe 50 people in a large space, everyone properly socially-distancing. I'm finding it much harder to walk on narrow pavements than in parks. For city-dwellers, green spaces are a lifeline.
In case anyone is looking for actual info on
#DublinAirport
situation - I joined the queue outside the airport at 3:40 and got through security about 5:45, at Terminal 1. Looks like five gates security scanners were in use.
Just snorted with laughter on the Tube at

I have lived in London for over fifteen years and I cannot get my head around the Piccadilly line in central London being signposted as east-west rather than north-south.
GRMMA to whoever on Twitter reminded me that Seinnteoir
@TG4TV
is currently showing Paisean Faisean, truly the greatest dating show of our age. You can stick yer Love Island, this is high-concept and iontach ar fad!
Good to see Asia Bibi’s blasphemy conviction overturned, but eight years in solitary confinement on death row is horrific, and it sounds like her ordeal isn’t over.
Really sorry to hear the news today about potential redundancy of a quarter of
@UKLabour
staff. As a former staffer, happy to give advice, CV reviews etc if helpful - please DM me.
So inspired by bravery of
@MaryCreaghMP
and
@jessphillips
speaking out today on their experiences of sexual harassment and assault. Two of the strongest women I've ever met, but still tough for anyone to share something so personal.
This is a brilliant article about the link between men’s football and violence against women and girls, how patriarchy enables this, and how we can change it. Do read it.
Irish people / film fans in London! Just walked into Fopp in Covent Garden and bought a copy of An Cailín Ciúin (
@quietgirlfilm
) for £6. SIX POUNDS! A bargain at twice the price.

@YvetteCooperMP
The story today about massive shortages of contraceptive pills and HRT demonstrates how politics, when dominated by men, ignores issues of major relevance to women.
@CCriadoPerez
I had a similar situation about 4 years ago where a man followed me home. I called 101, was on hold for an hour, nobody checked on me afterwards. I went to the station a few days later to report and was told after that no crime had been committed and they wouldn't request CCTV.
This is another very bad look from
@metpoliceuk
. It really feels like they’re more interested in covering up misogyny and racism in their ranks and its impact on Londoners than they are in tackling it.
Lots of lovely people are answering with advice on how to keep myself safe, but that’s not really the point. The point is women must restrict ourselves to a ridiculous extent to meet the low bar of not being killed. Until we tackle the causes of male violence, that’s how it is.
It’s mine and
@dan_smith67
’s sixth wedding anniversary today. On our first date, all I really knew about Dan was that he was a Labour member and worked in rail, so I talked at him about Labour’s HS2 policy for an hour. He is a very patient man.
@lottelydia
Yes, absolutely. I found myself reminiscing with a colleague today about how we miss Pret sandwiches. Not that they’re particularly good, just they were from the Before Times, when we could See People.
@DawnHFoster
@ms_peaceweaver
What’s his plan for a united Ireland as part of the UK then? Given that the Republic has shown absolutely zero interest, is he planning on invasion?
Massively impressed with
@LSRPlaid
’s grasp of Irish, as well as her support for Irish language rights. The Irish-speaking community can learn lots from the growth of Welsh over the past decades. Maith an bhean!
@Emina_ibrahim
That's absolutely horrifying. Your poor mum. So sorry to hear that you've all been placed in this stressful situation, particularly just before Christmas.
If you're a UK resident, please sign this petition to create a Gaelic Languages Act. Irish-speaking communities in Northern Ireland were promised legislation 15 years ago, and Scottish Gaelic speakers also need more services available in Gaelic.
Tonight I saw The End We Start From, my first five-star of the year. Jodie Comer is always amazing, but I found the whole thing incredibly affecting. (Shout out to E17’s God’s Own Junkyard, which I think makes an appearance!)
Saw the incredible Shining City at
@stratfordeast
. Conor McPherson’s plays are always worth watching, but the performances from Brendan Coyle and Rory Keenan were real tours de force. Definitely worth checking out in the next few weeks.
Thoughts and prayers with
@ChrisMasonBBC
, who is clearly doing everything he can to explain this utterly absurd situation to the nation while keeping a straight face.
On the walk from Millbank to Westminster Tube, I’ve just passed protesters for Remain, for Leave, against plastic use and against Britain’s treatment of Chagos Islands. Plus a group of Star Wars stormtroopers and a man with a placard that just read “Jesus”.
@darachos
What a kid. Kept it together when he clearly wasn’t expecting a special guest appearance too, like a pro. Great voice - I’m sure he has a bright future ahead.
@OwenJones84
What exactly are we counting as ‘extreme EU loyalty’? Is it knowing all the words to Ode to Joy? Or enjoying a glass of cassis de Dijon? Or spending one week in four in Strasbourg? The possibilities are endless...
@youngvulgarian
Damn right. An ex’s dad referred to me as ‘Mick the road-builder’ because I’m Irish. I was humiliated at the time, but actually the Irish did build the roads here. They’re good roads. And we’re nurses and teachers and engineers here too.
They say never meet your heroes. But having met
@BethKWebb
and
@AmonWarmann
today and burbled at them about how much a fan I am of
@empiremagazine
and
@PilotTVPod
, can confirm they were absolutely lovely, and much cooler than me.
Unbelievable hubris from Andrew Bridgen on
#Newsnight
calling the Irish border ‘a stick to beat the UK with’. It’s a real issue for millions of people on the island of Ireland, north and south.
Are any other Irish people in Britain slightly confused by the EHIC for EU nationals registration process? I've been asked to supply evidence of EU settled or pre-settled status, but this doesn't exist for Irish nationals owing to the CTA.
@IrelandEmbGB
@CalumSSherwood
@Divinadecampo
I’m just hoping that
@Divinadecampo
will come out to support the brilliant LGBT ally
@JoshFG
to be the next MP for Brighouse and Calder Valley! Particularly as the previous Tory MP voted against same-sex marriage.
This is quite worrying, given the number of people who don’t have a passport or driver’s licence. Levels of electoral fraud in the UK are incredibly low - this feels unnecessary and could disproportionately impact certain groups of people.
@B31Bowden
@mikeysmith
I agree. Apologies if my wording was clumsy - it’s being touted as a solution to voter fraud, but that is very rare in the UK, so it doesn’t seem necessary in the slightest. Trying to understand whether there could be a rationale that isn’t voter suppression but can’t see it.
Fantastic to see MPs joined by campaigners for Irish language legislation in Westminster today. (Sorry I couldn't be there!) NIO has promised legislation by end of October - important that this is brought forward swiftly.

Delighted to see the Guardian recognise An Cailín Ciúin / The Quiet Girl at number two in its top 50 films released in UK cinemas this year. So great to see an Irish-language film resonate with audiences all over the world.
I am now the sort of middle-aged woman whose dirty look to the guy with his ACTUAL BARE FEET on the train seat can make him move them off.
TWICE.
I’m living my best life right now.
Just out of a preview screening of
@quietgirlfilm
at
@CurzonBbury
, and it’s hands-down the best film I’ve seen all year. It has the same quiet power as Minari or Nomadland, and the three central performances are devastatingly good.
