Inspired by what I saw many colleagues doing. Let's be honest about how our work-life balance often really looks like during a pandemic. Lets reveal the truth of 2020: work-headshot vs reality after working till 5am for a grant🧐😂
Recognizing another breakthrough in cryo-EM. I am, as always, thrilled to be an expert & part of this amazing community, even before it being so popular. We have come a long way from being pitied & called blobologists 💪🏼🤓Are we now atomists 😅What’s next?
Dear

I have a new vacancy in my group to work on the osmoregulatory ABC transporter OpuA.
Why not join us ;)
Do you know of anyone? Please RT🔁

! This is how it should always be. Wish that all would see & act this way. The obsession for the best resolution number needs to stop. Often misleading, overestimated and simply incorrect. Map quality, the region of interest and biological question matter!
It may be worth noting that "standard" RELION 4 gave 2.9 Å resolution, cryoSPARC 3DFlex gave 2.7 Å (with a larger particle set) and RELION 5/BLUSH gave 3.0 Å. But the map quality of the latter was clearly the best, and using that map was the obvious choice.

Anyone really surprised? Working more hours than what your contract says is the most normal thing in academia and yet persistently (intentionally?) ignored by the government and other stakeholders to not take action. Nice to see some number though. 1/x
We are a group of students who calculated that every day a shocking 10.000 hours overtime is worked by teachers of Utrecht University. On the 31st of august, we will be spraying 10.000 chalk squares through Utrecht. One for every hour unpaid labour.

Indeed this also happened 😵💫😏 was trying to forget it Dirk, but good to remind people that bad/inappropriate reviews still happen. Hard to endure, especially for the Postdocs and PhDs. But hey on the bright side: the editor stood by us and we ultimately got it published 🤩
Although we are proud of our published work, the road to publication has been demotivating for the postdocs and PhD students who scrutinised every detail of their work. Have a look at the peer review files associated with the paper, and you will see why.
After some feedback from people I realized I should mention that all the work coming from my lab up to now (like this one) has all been done on a 200kV Talos Arctica. So definitely not just a screening machine! 😉
I am shocked and disgusted. While
@angew_chem
is investigating, a prestigious scientist actually wrote this and sb read and approved it in the first place. This is such a disgraceful, racist, stupid essay against diversity and (gender) equality
