Immediately after winning the college football national championship Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh called for NCAA athletes to unionize and for players to receive a bigger share of the billions that college sports brings in.

Today the College Football Players Association is excited to announce our player-led Leadership Committee (LC) and our Summer Membership Drive. See the 🧵 below for more info on LC members and how we intend to build the largest organized movement of college football players ever.
The news here is that this is the first group licensing deal in sports business history to not include royalties. CFB players get a video game instead of royalties. The athletes of the second most popular sport in America are being treated like children. Video games instead of 💰

NCAA previously said it would include 1 athlete from each division. Interestingly, 2 of 3 are track+field athletes.
Also interesting that "changes" that need to be made per Alston referred to basketball/football, and there aren't any student representatives from those sports.
Players understand that too much of the medical care they receive is not independent and not in their best interest. This is why our first platform plank calls for "guaranteed independent medical care enforced by a CFBPA-employed full-time employee representative."

When the College Football Playoffs are expanded to 12 teams, this will create $1.4 billion PER YEAR of new wealth. That money will go to even more insane coach buyouts if player don't stand up together to organize for a share of this new revenue.
Seven schools owe fired coaches a buyout of $122 million (excluding mitigation), surpassing what's believed to be the record set in 2021 of $94M.

Exactly right. The market at work. We think through actual negotiations with players + royalties, we would determine the actual market for what players are worth. Until this happens (which it hasn't), it's our recommendation that players opt out.
The marketplace at work. EA will offer about $500 to players for their names and likenesses to be in the game. If a player says no, the player is replaced by a generic player. This is legal. It's also legal if players join hands to say no. I wrote about legal implications of the
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Damar Hamlin and his family. We applaud the players on the Bills and Bengals who refused to return to play in the midst of this tragedy. In this dark moment, these players showed who truly makes the game go and who does not.
Our very first plank in the CFBPA Platform for Change calls for independent medical care for players enforced by one of our employees. This is the only way this type of behavior will end. Full platform here:

Today we launch a movement to build a College Football Players Association. A

will be built one player at a time. ESPN has covered our launch here:
For those who are saying we're trying to make $$ off this video game campaign, we're not. That ship has sailed. We just want players to get a real seat at the table and let the market decide what they make.
Our Platform for Change stresses the need for players to have CFBPA reps at their disposal for conversations such as this. Had DeSanto Rollins had a CFBPA rep by his side, this encounter would likely not have gone down like this.
EXCLUSIVE: FOS has obtained audio of the heated exchange between Lane Kiffin and DT DeSanto Rollins after Rollins' 'mental health break.'
Ole Miss and Kiffin have motioned to dismiss a $40M lawsuit from Rollins.

Everyone has their opinions about what players are worth to appear in the video game. We say let the market decide through actual negotiations with players and through royalties to players. Neither happened with this video game.
READ THIS THREAD. CFB players need to start thinking like this. Like a professional. Like someone who knows their worth. Like someone who understands that they ARE THE GAME. Stop settling for scraps and for what others tell you that you are worth.
1 of the most highly anticipated game franchises to return to the big screen, projected to make HUNDREDS of millions dollars and only wanna cut the players $500 each AND no royalties! What a joke! I support the players on this and if you don’t, you are a part of the problem!
The issue of the offseason is what should happen with the NEW $1.4 billion PER YEAR that will be generated from the College Football Playoff expansion. We believe it should be shared with the players who generate that wealth. Read more in today’s On3 newsletter:
Today at his newsletter, CFBPA Executive Director
@JasonStahl__
discusses why 2023 must be the year that college football players organize into the College Football Players Association:
Moreover, players need to have an actual seat at the table which they did not have in this case and in so many others cases. It's always "they're kids, we'll figure out what's best for them." Those days are over.
Today, the Biden administration joins the college athlete rights debate.
"White House officials will meet former [CFB] players and advocates to discuss why [CFB] players - and all student-athletes - deserve consistent safety standards"

College football players, and college athletes generally, need to beware of the fake players association. Demand an independent, member-driven association like the CFBPA. Read more:

In our CFBPA Platform for Change, we talk about changing CFB practice environments to be more like the Ivy League or the NFL. Dartmouth is the gold standard. Read about what they do here:

I believe college football players deserve to have their voice heard on and off the field.
Today, I met with former players and advocates to discuss fair treatment and consistent safety standards.

Read the whole thread. For those saying the scholarship is a form of payment, the NCAA specifically says it isn't. Also, an undergraduate student working concessions at a game can be on academic scholarship and still get paid an hourly wage. Why not the players on the field?
It’s crazy to me that these schools get paid north of 70 million annually for tv contracts but the athletes actually producing the entertainment don’t see a cent of that.
When are we actually gonna give these athletes a seat at the table for these discussions? 🤔

You can get rid of the NCAA. And I think that day is coming, especially for Power 5. But then you also have to trust that the presidents, ADs and leaders who've created, backed and cosigned its rules are willing to start from scratch and create a better system. I'm not convinced.
However, we are seeking to represent college football players. Given this, we think it is our job to talk about why we feel this deal is bad. Namely, it was not negotiated by player reps and it does not contain royalties which are industry standard. (2/3)

$600 and a copy of the game is shameful for college athletes.
Let me explain why:
NFL players are compensated ~$30,000-35,000 per year to be in the Madden video game. Assuming there are roughly 3,000 players in the game, that’s well over $90M.
Carry that to the NCAA video

Getting organized into a players association gives you protections from this type of debased behavior and the culture that produced it. You can have a healthier workplace and love football more with a players association. College football does not have to be this way.

I have zero reason not to buy or play the game. Ultimately, the players are being compensated what they have deemed to be “fair” to continue production of the game. As someone who fought for NIL rights long before it became a thing, I don’t think they got what they could’ve or
What is happening now is healthy. We're finally having a conversation about what players are worth to appear in the video game. That hadn't happened yet. We say let the market decide: real negotiations with players + royalties.
