Big thread on prairies incoming In 1820 there was, depending on what source you look at, somewhere between 20-23 million acres of prairie in Illinois alone. For reference, that is 54-63% of the entire state of Illinois, which is why early settlers called it the prairie state.

@PSpaceAmoeba @1894gang @___frye Lumber used to be plentiful because we were clear cutting forests that had been there for thousands of years. These days we can't do that, partially because of environmental regulations (which is good!) and partially because we already cut almost all of them down

@WannabeLonerr @VermilViathan @EldianParticles Did you know that 45% of us grown corn is used to inefficiently make ethanol? Farmers get away with a lot these days and are very privileged. Plus most farms are not small mom and pop farms, and most are owned by some millionaire who's probably never touched the land

@AllezLesBoulez @Very__Regular While the central US definitely gets more tornadoes than the rest of the world, another reason why the numbers are so heavily stacked is because we do a really good job of documenting them. I'd probably guess the real number to be closer to 50ish percent of tornadoes

You can help protect Illinois' wetlands by taking action RIGHT NOW. It's easy to do and only takes a minute, but it's a critically important way to tell state legislators to support wetlands legislation. See the thread below.

The tallgrass prairie is one of the most diverse ecosystems around, home to over 500 species of plants, 80 species of mammals, and 300 species of birds. This is an incredible ecosystem, and the loss of it is devastating. Today, there is almost no high quality prairie left

1/5 Have you heard of the grand Kankakee marsh? Known as the Everglades of the North, this expansive wetland once covered around 1,500 square miles. It was one of the largest wetlands in America, but extensive draining efforts in the early 1900's replaced most of it with farmland

One last note: a healthy prairie can have over 35 species of plants in just 1 square meter. That is how special these places are. There has been a number of recreated prairies in the last 50 years, but they aren't as healthy or diverse as the original stuff

@PSpaceAmoeba @1894gang @___frye America used to be covered in thick prairies and lush forests. We clear cut the forests and tilled the prairies into farmland. Here in Illinois, we once had over 21 million acres of prairie in the state. Today, there's less than 2,000 acres of original prairie left. 0.01%

The soil under these prairies was some of the most fertile soil in the world, making it very valuable for farming, and with the invention of the steel plow in 1837 it made it possible to till and farm this land This resulted in reckless destruction of the Prairie.

All it took was 150 years for the Illinois prairie to be nearly completely wiped out. In 1976, it was found that only 2,300 acres of healthy prairie remained, and most of that was along old railways and therefore not protected, meaning much of that has been to woody encroachment

1974 super outbreak really was just built different. You can argue there were more violent tornadoes due to the different rating system, and you can also argue more extreme damage from lower building quality, but that ground scouring doesn't lie

@LHadinugraha @PSpaceAmoeba @1894gang @___frye That's the difference between old growth hardwood vs farmed wood. Old growth forests produce trees that have very tight grain, and it is very strong. If they're farming it, they want it to grow as fast as possible, so they choose the faster growing species, which aren't as strong
