I need a strong research coordinator to work with me. Must have Master degree and strong research skills. Please if you know anyone that is strong, encourage them to apply
Someone called me a trailblazer today. I thought further about it and realized I am most likely the first African born female full professor in a School/Faculty of Medicine in Canada and likely the first Black female Full Professor in a School/Faculty of Medicine in the prairies
Last day physically at Ualberta as full-time staff. It's been a period of intense hard work and success. I am grateful to my family, communities, mentors, research personnel, funders, colleagues, and my childcare provider.
Looking forward to the success that lies ahead
Exciting day today as I begin a new chapter as Professor at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. I am also hyper-excited to work with some of my favorite people as Scientific Director, EDI, at the Alberta Childrens Hospital Research Institute.
Two days ago, I received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for my contribution to the province of Alberta.
Thank you to MLA
@DShepYEG
for nominating me for this award.
As a Black Academic at the University of Alberta who has experienced attacks and racist comments simply for saying there is economic and health inequality, I support my colleague Dr. Ubaka Ogbogu
@UbakaOgbogu
Stayed up till 5:30am today to finally submit my application for promotion to Full Professor. I completed a final review of my promotion file and CV and thought: This is

As a mom of a 3 year old girl who has been raised as a Muslim, likes to have Muslim prayer with her dad (and copy him), and wear outfits that positively represent her identity, I disagree that wearing an hijab is child abuse.
Our team has approval from Statistics Canada to analyze data on the health of Black Canadians. Our 1st step was to examine the socio-demographic characteristics of Black Women, using the Canadian Community Health Survey. Results coming to a journal near you.

2 days ago, we learnt that the Alberta gov is proposing a 3% pay cut for nurses after some nurses have sacrificed their life to get us through the pandemic. Today, we learnt the government will be increasing the cost of cabinet by expanding the number of Cabinet ministers :(
It is a great honor to be the inaugural recipient of the
@HRF_FRS
@innovativemeds
Diversity and Equity Award. I join others who have in the past received an award from the organization - e.g. Sir Alexander Fleming (discovered penicillin) and Charles Best (co-discovered insulin)
It is an honour to recognize Dr.
@BukolaKSalami
as the inaugural recipient of the HRF Diversity & Equity in Research Award. Dr. Salami has received international recognition for her work on the policies and practices that shape migrant health, and for her leadership in nursing.
Today, I will begin my annual leave; after this I will leave the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta on June 30, 2023 after 9.5 years. It has been a period of intense hard work, mentorship (being mentored and mentoring others) and accelerated growth.
My sabbatical ends today with 34+ submitted/published papers, 50+ presentations and guest lectures, 20+ media interviews, creation of Black Youth Mentorship Program and impact on policies and program etc. I am most grateful for the privilege to impact lives.
I recently skimmed through the standards/ competencies of health professionals and realized there is often no mention of racism. To address racism as a social determinant of health, we need to ensure anti-racism is included in the professional competence of health professionals
A great pleasure to meet and have lunch with Professor Kimberlee Crenshaw

Over the last 9 years, I have been engaged in around 85-funded research with immigrant, Black and racialized populations. Here are some lessons
1) Immigrant communities are not homogenous. E.g. there is diversity within African immigrant population.

25 years ago, I attended the

Summer Mentorship Program. The program transformed my life especially as a Black youth with graduate prepared parent who was working unskilled job. Today, one of my friends since the program sent me the picture we took during the program
Yesterday, I reflected on my mentorship experience during a meeting with 1 of my mentees. 8 of my previous students / RAs are now tenure track Assistant or Associate Professors. It is such a gratifying experience watching previous mentees become mentors

In late February, we will begin recruitment for the third year of the University of Alberta Black Youth Mentorship and Leadership Program. The impact has been great and we continue to see adaptations of the mentorship program replicated across Canada.
We are examining culturally appropriate strategies to collecting data from Black people. We've reviewed the methods of 25 studies on health of Black people in the prairies and have interviewed researchers who have collected data. Our results will be out shortly.

When we think of

we think of a gun shot or a police officer kneeling on the neck of a black man. However, we must consider how we are loosing black lives everyday due to preventable health disparities e.g. higher death from COVID, HIV etc

The College of Nursing, University of Saskatchewan is looking to hire Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Refugee and Migrant Health Promotion and Integration.
Today, I gave a career talk to a group of 4 year old. I spoke to them about what being a Professor of Nursing is about. My most difficult task this week is explaining to a 4 year old that I do qualitative research
We completed an analysis of data from 12,000 Canadian and interviewed 55 immigrant service providers in Alberta on factors that contribute to the mental health of immigrants. Top among these factors is community belonging and income.

Almost 20 years ago, I took a step into success by becoming a registered nurse. My view of nursing was quite limited at that time. Today, I believe it was one of the best decisions I would have ever made. I wouldn't be where I am today if not for nursing.

Congratulations to (Dr.) Nasrin Saleh on her dissertation "Understanding the Experiences of Canadian Muslim Nurses Who Wear a Hijab". This timely report of Islamaphobia is required reading for all nurses and nursing students!

Thanks to all those who have joined the Canadian Nurses Association and are planning to vote during the upcoming election.
I am running for Vice President of the Canadian Nurses Association. You can vote for me between May 21 and June 3
Tomorrow, I will be a keynote presenter at the Canadian Doctoral Nursing Network Conference
@UofRegina
During the presentation, I will discuss my program of research focused on Black children and youths
My 4 year old twin nieces in Toronto like to wear an
#hijab
occasionally. They wear it because they think it makes them look cute, they want to look like mummy (their role model), they are going to a
#Muslim
event, support their identity, and it makes them feel good.
As a researcher working on immigrant health and educator who has supervised early career researchers working with
#Muslim
populations, I am yet to see evidence in Canada that a child wearing an
#hijab
in Canada leads to child abuse in Canada.
Most people do not wake up and say my mission is to be racist today. However many have conscious bias, unconscious bias, assumptions, fear and insecurities etc and all these can lead to racism especially in situations of unequal power relations
Later this month, I will be doing what I truly enjoy doing .... building capacity of Black youth. I will be speaking to members of the Yoruba Cultural Association of Edmonton on applying for awards and scholarships.
